So any of you who have been here for a long time...a really, really, really long time...may actually know who I am. I was here for about a year or so, from the summer of 2001 until the end of the summer of 2002, though I've kept in contact with some people from the board since then. Kirbynite, an upstanding citizen of sorts, finally managed to convince me to check this place out again. Of course, since most of you here probably joined since then, while a few of you may have heard of me, in most of your minds I'm very much a newbie at this point.

I had a good time on this board when I was here before, and we'll see if that happens again, hopefully without the drama the caused me to feel it wasn't worth it way back when. And I look forward to making your aquaintances, since I'm sure there is once more an interesting group of people here. I am in general a pretty easygoing and fun-loving guy, and eager to help others. All I ask in return is courtesy and honesty.

I guess that was all a bit formal, but when you make a return after being gone for a while, sometimes that seems necessary...though I guess it may seem weird for all of you who just see it as an entrance rather than a return. So to be less formal:

Hi! I'm new (sort of)!

Also, no, I don't owe Tom money, as the agreement was not that I would never return...but that I would never return while things stayed as they were. There were various specific requirements and sets thereof that would make it "ok" to return and fulfill the conditions specified in the bet, which have indeed been met.

Besides, he never paid me the money he owed me, which was due after a month of absence.

The dust in the plaza swirled as the wind whipped through the town center, almost as a greeting to the new traveller who had entered the village. Like others who had arrived following the great flash of light, he had a determined look in his eyes, the eyes of a man who had seen much, but still reflected youth. He seemed, however, to be somewhat nervous, as if the thrill of the coming adventure was tinged by anxiety at finding the answer to a question he had been asking himself for quite some time, not really sure he wanted the response that would come.

"This does seem to be the only settlement. I would have expected more of a reaction based on the dire warnings the guild in Temir had talked about. I suppose this makes things easier."

The traveller would be unremarkable in most of the places he tended to frequent, but here he stood out. The bright sun reflecting off the water of the town center's fountain caused him to squint his deep blue eyes, and as he turned away his raven hair, perhaps a bit too long but hardly necessitating a cut, tossed about before coming to rest on the cloak he wore. The cloak itself was musty, speaking of many miles walked, a deep red which would appear black under lesser lighting. As it was, the color stood out amid the dull tans and browns worn by most of the townspeople. The traveller kept the cloak fastened tightly about him even as he reached to sip from his hip flask and looked furtively about. Nothing seemed particularly out of the ordinary, which worried him more than a horde of monsters would have. With those, he thought, dispatch brough security...here, the right course of action might be more complex. Not one to rush, though, the traveller lounged next to the fountain and waited to see who else would show up to investigate.

((Wow...Adamant, SomerZ, and me all coming back at once...crazy...))

Just moments later, Kirbynite nearly lept off the floating island that was Neo Grape Gardens. The reason?

Sky: Hey Kirb, finished up that training I was doing, and figured I'd pick you up before finding another bad guy to vanquish or something. And then I saw the Weatherdark, so I figured SomerZ must be around. Just like old times!

At that, the dreamlander was about as shocked as he had ever been. Sky, the Magewarrior who had accompanied him on many journeys in previous years, had disappeared without a trace a while back. And now suddenly he was on the island? The man smiled as his cloak flapped in the light breeze that came through the area. Dressed in the attire of a Red Wizard, Sky appeared to many as a strange cross between a hardened veteran...and a pimp.

Meanwhile a dark individual sat in the corner of the bar, watching the group at the bar. Clad in a dingy cloak, his well-cropped dirty blonde hair and clean face betrayed his guise as a drifter. His demeanor was unpleasant, but he enjoyed a chuckle at the antics of the men who had fled from the area around the stage. The spell had hit him too, but was quickly countered. Amused by it, he decided there was no need to engage Johnathan over it, and sat back and took another sip of his booze. They really were simple parlor tricks, but he could tell they were just the base of a more impressive power. He knew something was going to go down here today, his sources had told him as much. How these folks would fit in, though, he wasn't sure. For now, he would sit back and wait.

A voice rang out from one of the cliffs surrounding the group

Sky: I really don't think they would appreciate that. I know I wouldn't. There's probably a better way.

Sky dodged Gutsman's hastily thrown shuriken with a lazy lean to the side. It seemed everyone else, while somewhat shocked by his sudden appearance, figured that anyone announcing their presence wasn't a ninja. Particularly anyone dressed in the red garb of this particular warrior. His cape flowed around him as he lept from the cliff and landed deftly on the earth below. For someone who had just announced himself, it was remarkably quiet. Brushing the dust aside, he approached Kirbynite.

Sky: Isn't Chatau Romani the other way?

Well, Alastor, in all fairness, I AM a newbie in many ways. I may have been a member of the boards way back when, but to most people here, I've just joined for the first time. As such, this isn't the same as the "I'm back!" kinds of threads in the Newbie forum which are, as I read, rather explicitly prohibited, particularly due to the recent wipe. So it could go either way, really, but so long as it's not closed, that works. I suppose more people will likely see it here anyway.

Particularly now, I have to go with the last one. I'm currently studying abroad in England, which is a great experience, and a few weekends ago I took a trip to Rome. Really wonderful, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to do something like that after I've entered the workforce, so I'm glad to be able to do it. So I've been quite a ways from Cleveland (and my normal college is out in California, so even then...). Add to that my trips to Mexico and Honduras, and I've travelled fairly extensively.

But I always want to go more places. I have a thirst for exploration of sorts. I say of sorts because I really have no wish to trek anywhere too far away from some degree of civilization.

((Wow...I read the whole story thus far, and I'm still not exactly sure what is happening...but I'll try to follow along and figure it out decently well...))

A voice came from the darkness near Kirbynite, startling him. It was somewhat familiar, but he couldn't quite place it.

"He said you'd be here, right in the center of the action. He didn't tell me you'd be running away from it already, though. I've got to say, I expected more."

The figure stepped forward from the shadows. Clad in a long black trenchcoat, and decked out rather extensively, Kirbynite recognized him instantly as Sky's son, who had gone through something of an identity crisis, and seemed to have a different name each time he showed up. Quite a good fighter, and possessing a good deal of magical power, he had some difficulty focusing it, perhaps based on his magicless mother. As such, he drew a lot of his power through Magitech systems, which allowed him to use the best of technology and his own powers, focusing them as he had some difficulty doing himself. Barely an adult, his voice had the stress of one who had already been through many ordeals.

"It's Strato this time, by the way. So where are you headed, and why away from the fun so fast?"

**************************

Taking a far different approach, a girl just a bit younger watched from a nearby hill as Evan fought what seemed to be no more than a child. Kept from them by a barrier, she could only watch. Draped in mages robes concealing a more fighteresque outfit, she waited patiently for a chance to intervene. Aether practiced a state of meditation. She was only here to observe, as her father had reminded her time and again, unless the situation became desperate. She smiled. He had such concern for her safety, and always had. As the last link to her mother, his lost love, she would always have a special place in her father's heart, and she knew it pained him to send her into potential danger. But she and her brother...half brother, she supposed...were the ones he could trust the most, so he had no choice. Trinity could only be matched as such. She wondered how the others were faring.

**************************

The red-robed traveller approached Elysia cautiously. He had seen what she could do. He had also seen what force had been brought to bear against her. He wasn't exactly sure of the situation, but knew it was going to be a wary one for all parties. Sky regretted having to bring his children back to this time to deal with this, but then, he smiled as he remembered, it was hardly the first time, nor with his luck would it be the last. With luck, their assistance could bring some balance to the problems, balance the world sorely needed. He had heard of the reports of the situation in New York escalating, and considered going there in his son's stead, but knew one of them needed to be here in the desert. Pushing these thoughts aside, he addressed the woman.

"I've seen what you can do. But why are you here? What are you trying to start...or prevent?"

While I've definitely gotten used to driving in the recommended fashion, with my right foot doing both, on longer trips I really feel like my left foot is just sitting there, not really doing anything. This feeling becomes even worse when my right foot does the same, when I turn on cruise control. Which is one of the reasons why I sometimes don't turn cruise control on even when it would be fine and safe to do so.

And if you want to drive really fast, take a car on the autobahn.

Wait, 4'10 is legally a midget? What's the cutoff for that? Because one of my exes, great girl, still friends with her...better recently than before, actually, is 4'11, and she's almost 20. Though I suppose since when I dated her, when I was 18/19 and she wasn't 18 yet, she wouldn't be a midget yet, even if she is now...

Funny thing is, the guy she's gone in and out of being engaged to (twice now) is 6'6 or so. I was 5'7 when I dated her and thought THAT was a rather large difference...

This has actually been a rather serious issue a number of times, but what it really comes down to is whether the state will allow religion to operate or not. If a guy is on his way to getting caught, then it's not like he can avoid detection by confessing his sins. So it's not like it's a horrible impediment in the justice process. If priests were even ALLOWED to disclose information obtained in confession, let alone demanded to do so, that cripples the practice, as people would be frightened of going to confession, even if there's no legal actions to bring against them, as the fear of social ostracism is a serious one.

But on a lighter note, that is indeed a hilarious news story.

Oddly enough, I was a big fan of Pepsi over Coke for many years. It wasn't until I was down in Honduras several years ago, for some reason, that I really realized my preference for Coke that has persisted to this day.

It really made me sad when they switched the Coke in the dining halls for Pepsi.

So there's something I've always wanted to do, but have yet to have the nerve, or the right girl for it. But I can at least share it with all of you.

So any of you who have gone to a baseball game have probably seen the thing where the guy proposes to his girl, with use of the jumbotron, and they bring the camera over and watch as she accepts (with rare exception) and everyone cheers and all.

Basically, my idea is on a rather early date with a girl, arrange exactly that, but as a joke. As in, when it happens, I will discreetly tell her that I'm not serious about it.

Now, as I said, one concern is not the right girl. I would need to discern very early on several things. First, that she has a great sense of humor. Without it, either she wouldn't get that it was really a joke, or she wouldn't find it funny, and might be offended. Secondly, she can't be psychoclingy; imagine how much of a problem that'd be if she said yes and thought I was serious, as I explained afterwards. Thirdly, she has to not be really afraid of big things like that...though I guess that ties in with the sense of humor.

The thing is, in a way, it could be a litmus test, since I think the ideal girl for me WOULD get that joke, and would think it was a wonderful, really cool, sweet, quirky, and endlessly amusing thing to do early on in a relationship. But I wonder if any girl would actually react as such, and I can't say I blame them; that's definitely a rather odd situation to be in.

You can say what you want about the Steelers' performance in the playoffs, but the fact remains that from the middle of the season people doubted they could make them at all. And then predictions favored their opponents in all rounds of the playoffs. The Seahawks were strong this year, too, and the Steelers rose to the challenge and played a hard-fought game, with iffy calls on both sides, to win. I just think it's a shame that watching it from Britain I got the British commentators rather than the American ones.

As a Steelers fan, it was an epic season, even more so for my father and brother, who managed to get tickets to the Super Bowl as well as one of the playoff games.

Yeah, it wasn't really a wonderful game, but it was still exciting to watch in the company of die-hard fans for both teams, as you might expect.

I really have to wonder about the series being put into the feature film format. The general story seems very well geared towards anime/manga, what with what might be described as a glorified "monster of the week" for most of its episodes. One of the issues that arises is that for most shows that can be glossed over, and most of them eliminated, whereas for Eva it seems rather necessary to have all of them, else some of the meaning and numbers rather vanishes. And I don't know how great a movie would seem to the general public that appeared in that format, the one challenge, fix it, move on to the next. This is why something like the End of Evangelion (which, while still trippy, was more satisfying than the original series' end) works better, as it's something of a prolonged struggle.

Basically it seems like you'd have to eliminate more than could be taken out to cause it not to be what seems like an extended compilation of a tv show and turn it into a single story a couple hours long.

But I would love to be proven wrong by a great movie. Though I was somewhat disappointed by the rather trippy turn the series took in later episodes; I rather liked the more tangible mech-vs-angel action of the earlier episodes.

Faith alone for salvation? That seems to be one of the main issues of contention between Catholics and non-Catholic Christians. It's something that I've often struggled with myself, as a Catholic, in coming to terms with. In some ways it can be seen as a rather unimportant detail, but in others it's absolutely crucial in the determination of one's faith.

I'm sure we've all heard the phrase "actions speak louder than words" and agree that in many cases there's some truth to that. But is it really such in the case of religion? Perhaps it's partially due to some bitterness at the idea of someone who has sinned their whole life converting on their deathbed and receiving the same salvation as one who has led a pious life that some like to believe you have to prove your devotion by doing good works. Perhaps it is from here that the concept of Purgatory comes into play, as an alternative means to pay one's debt...but pay it one must. It really seems much more 'fair' than that example.

But then, I have to doubt the system a bit due to a particular story in the bible. As a Catholic, I know the bible to some extent, but certainly can't quote verses. But anyone familiar probably knows the story of the farmer who hires men in the morning to work in his field. Later in the day he hires some more men to help. Later still, just a few hours before the end of the day, he hires more help. At the end of the day, all of the men receive the same wage. This is a parable told by Jesus for the apportionment of the same salvation to all who have worked, no matter how long they have done so. And it really makes me wonder.

I know I didn't answer any questions, and perhaps raised a few more...but it's something good to think about for anyone who believes in some sort of Heaven.
