I like swords too but I couldn't eat a whole one

I'd say using a block that unexpectedly bounced you into the air was a bit 'glitchy' . But that's me.

DAMN! It's such a shame that LM exists because it RUINS all these fun games with hex and checksum and stops the TRUE hackers from flourishing

PLUS it means that people who are creative at level design can make hacks which are better than the ASM hackers who are no good at level design, which makes them a bit riled.... HAHAHA!

This was a parody post. Move on.....

SM_Gamer, you really need to tell us what we need to know and thats..

1: What kind of levels
2: ExGFX or not
3: Where to send it
4: Anything else I forgot

At the rate this is going, its gonna crumble and fall through the floor.

Ps: Ive been using alot of lists in posts lately... is it a disease?

1) Maybe
2) I wouldn't worry about it though

I hate to say it but I don't see any real care in those screenshots. It looks rushed and botched together, and a tad empty too. Probably good for a first hack though.

Sounds incredible. No doubt when it's more complete I'll have a look at it. I really should get back into the scene one day.. So many endeavours, so little time

I am staying in America for 3 months and I decided to have a look at this place again and maybe think about starting a new SMW hack. Also, I'm going to release Sendy's World when I get back home (In about 2 months time), but I will be releasing it with all the slowdown problems caused by the custom blocks. I am still really sad about that, because as it stood, I was told I had to replace ALL the blocks in my hack by hand and try a new patch, and after that, it might not even improve

But it's certainly playable (mainly due to huge enemy thinning and optimization) even with the slowdown and if people like it I may try and debug it, maybe with some help from others, and then finish the sumbiotch.

So what are the latest revelations round here? I've read the last couple of pages but don't really have time to do much more. Are there any new tools I should be aware of if I start SMW hacking again? And more importantly, how are my old SMW buddies?

Jesper - I have popped back to lurk a little here and there over the past couple of years but now I feel like getting into back into the scene good and proper. I haven't used LM in ages; hopefully I'll remember all the fiddly stuff. The Eggvine editor is looking amazing... I don't think I'll be doing a YI hack just yet though - too complicated and really LM still has so many possibilities, especially combined with the other tools.

Karadur - Glad you liked the last demo of my hack... Though the version I'm working on is much better in every way (graphics, overworld, levels are more refined etc). The problems won't stop me making the next demo patch when I get home but they may marr finishing the project in the long run. We'll have to see. Thanks for the links, I'll check them out after posting this.

Blackhole - To say that's welcome news is an understatement, since I'm a musician myself and would love to make music for my levels... Wow...

Kirby - Yeap, I still exist, which is handy and stuff . I remember seeing some of JAMH and it is indeed excellent. I've also seen BMF's hack, I played that while I was lurking a while back, inspiring to say the least, and great fun to play.

Cpubasic - Thanks for the encouragement... Actually topping SW might be hard, because I put an insane amount of time into it, but I can but try and better myself.

So do I remember something about a tool for making backgrounds out of pictures or something like that? Please don't tell me I dreamed that because making BG's was one of the most tedious parts of SMW designing

Ok, off to tool up..

I was only against the idea of unprotecting ROMs because I like to spend a long time hiding nice things or setting optional puzzles and stuff like that. Now there isn't much reason for me to bother.

BTW, taking the moral high ground about hacking is dumb. The ethics of hacking a game for an obsolete system and the ethics of hacking a hack of a hack are incompatible.

Let me make it simpler - if you hack a 10 year old game, you aren't harming Nintendo or any of the authors of the game. They made their money and the games were enjoyed and played long before all the secrets inside them were uncovered.

Now consider the average fan 'hacker' who produces anything worthwhile. He puts in an insane amount of hours, often inbetween a dayjob and social life. He works hard for no profit whatsoever... All he wants is the satisfaction that people will be frustrated, delighted, confused and amused by his work as they play it. He takes no claim for the original authors' work, and states that only the level design, graphics (if he/she made them), and extra ASM hacking was done by him.

THAT is why said hackers wish to have their hacks locked... So that their hard work can pay off in that way.

I don't have much of a problem with it, besides the fact that I don't see any use for it, other than to rip others' work, and to satisfy some sort of 'moral crusade' (which is an impression I got after reading the Readme file).

I requested a locking feature in LM because it was too easy to just open a game in LM and ruin hours of work by seeing the solution, where the secrets are, etc. Talk of copyright and the rest of it is just getting anal IMO

Most of us here are not hackers, but level designers and in some cases, graphic artists.

"Nintendo made SMW almost 15 years ago. Everyone knows everything about it. The game is no longer in production. I seriously doubt they give a rat's ass if anyone hacks it - hell, it's good for them, because people will see this really cool Nintendo game and go buy more. When they say emulation is bad for them, they're talking about games that are still on the market, and you damn well know it."

Amen to that.

"He called Kyouji stupid? When?"

He's made him look stupid, a little, though it may be in fun.

I like the *idea* behind the sepia effect, but the execution needs a little work IMO.

As for the design contest, I think it's a great idea. I'm sick of all this dogma about 'hacking' and limitations from Lunar Magic and ASM hacks, really really sick of it. Gameplay is the important thing and that stems from level design alone. I would participate but I have other plans.

Pet peeve with overworlds, you have some Escher-type space going on with that bridge... Count the altitude from sea level of each side of the bridge

Also, and this isn't totally neccecary, but you need to add the 'corner' tiles for the white part of where the sea meets the cliffs.

Posted on 01-21-05 11:13 PM, in Sprite editing Link
I've looked at both the sprite editors, and I was a bit dissapointed that the things I wanted to edit weren't available for editing. This is just me being picky because it's great that sprite editing has finally become non-sacred and people are making tools for it.

But, I'd really like something for editing weather or not you can drill jump on things. I'm thinking specifically of the grinders and fire-related enemies here. I always thought it was kinda silly that spinning around would save you from spinning blades or fire and wanted to disable that in my next game.

Also I was hoping for something to edit the various speed and acceleration values for sprites (and perhaps Mario) but I guess that is not really sprite editing but data editing (and I'm sure there's some info on this in another thread which I'm going to look for before the day is done).
