Of course, people searching for ... "stuff" might avoid it, but this is an example how common abusing these issues still is. Just an example about repairing security holes shows Firefox:

After the first trojans using .xpi appeared on Firefox - you know the file type Firefox uses to install extensions - the developers spent Firefox an installation manager which blocks unrequested .xpis from websites the first time. You'll have to allow manually to install software if you want to using the manager. That is even for important pages like update.mozilla.org or texturizer neccessary.

This is because Firefox is open-source and everyone easily can fix any issues, while in IE you have to wait for fixes for months usually, unless it is really an extremly urgent hole (and even then, there are workarounds - like that JPG or drag & drop exploit using IE ).

I know one member on Acmlm's personally (he didn't reregister again with the board-relaunch), I have one two users from here on my contact list, but don't know them in RL - since they live in the US

I know some other people personally on that board, since some of them in live in Berlin like me; we meet sometimes.
As for here, it is a nice board, but there are one, two people I would like to know personally, live far away from here - and I lack the money and time to do that

Posted on 11-08-04 09:47 PM, in Problem with acmlm board: say's MY IP address is banned Link
If your ISP gave you or has a proxy you can use, try it. Most IPs are dynamic and change on every new session you connect to the Internet - but it might be a 'small' ranged ban (like the last three digits replaced with wildcards in ipban.dat) you unfortunately fell in.

Like any admin can see, my IP address usually starts out with "145" mostly, when I'm using no proxy. When I switch to that (haven't done on that machine yet, but think will put it in), it begins with another series of numerals.

A proxy server usually is a fully new IP address on the same host - if you get some proxy information you might try it - every browser enables you to use one, and it's not hard at all to set one up and done quickly.

In the PAL version at least the two digits turn blue after reaching the maximum number of exits (getting all 96 of them)

I wonder why Nintendo advertised the game having "96 levels", although the hidden stuff mostly were few level, the rests exits only - sure it is an ass-kicking good game and some (good placed) 'lies' are good, when it comes to advertising - but that is plain wrong

It might be considered for some people planning a small general meeting - unfortunately (or just nor ?) many people are spread out all over the world posting here, unlike something like a German specific board it is hard to gather the people

We did that already somewhere else - and it is interesting what I discovered about people being "hidden" behind their user names and avatar - but I was mostly positively impressed and would to that again

Hehe, this is the second time I'll get a new Firefox version within few hours after release (I'm used to this since 0.7 and never got it later than two or three days - 1.0 came four hours after release on my old machine) - even if Firefox promises to be able keeping old extensions, I'll do a clean install - I have six extensions and one additional themes - not too much to lose

Anyway I have a German Firefox 1.0 PR atm - I simply replaced the English localization .jar file by the German one from 0.9.2

So now it's really official - Firefox is completed so far ...

Hehe, got right my six most favourite extensions installed plus Noia 2.0 eXtreme theme again - I didn't notice any speed changes since 1.0PR - but it is as fast as expected and still already builds up tables in boards, where IE still tries to gather all information and then render all at once

Posted on 11-10-04 12:56 PM, in THE BIGGER ONE: Trillian 3.0 is out Link
Might be okay, but I'm stickying to Miranda IM. I have currently the Trillian free version 0.74 installed, in case, Miranda should fail to connect one day

But as for Miranda: It is less than 1 MB in size, doesn't require install (just unzip and run) uses about 4-5 MB or RAM and is highly configurable due to a mass of plugins available - even tabbed browsing of chat windows like in Opera or Firefox is possible.
And with an additional fully configurable status pop-up notify it is really ass-kicking, like in an older screenshot seen here. And if you are annoyed, turn it off using the status try icon without going into the program's options. But anyway I disabled all sounds and popups when I'm selecting N/A or DND.

For me: Trillian is good, nonetheless, but Miranda is better

I registered a hotmail address, but only for my MSN account; so I don't want to use my main email address as MSN account for being spammed though - except the welcoming mail I never got an email using that MSN email account - even if, with Firefox 1.0 I'm more on the secure side than IE
Plus I'm running Thunderbird 0.8 (I'll update to 0.9 today) - since my email provider already provides a good spam folder feature, I'm double sure -> Emails show plain text only, unrequested stuff with attachments I delete instantly without reading it (right-click and delete) and the Junk filter enabled.

Posted on 11-10-04 01:52 PM, in Stupid Layout Link
If you might replace the default Windows descriptions (not too hard using PSP or PS) by custom ones, preferrably links like "My Profile" insted of "My Documents" - of course not everything is needed, it would be good

Make it so the left box containing the folder information is much shorter but the body (including the blue and white part) stretches when writing a longer post. And then just add the bottom frame to that.
So it might be good and just fit, when the text goes into an frameless input area in the "white part"

The second layout just sucks: On multi-colored backgrounds with a high contrast it is very hard to read text above it

I have two email accounts. My trash account is located on Yahoo and now more than four years old, just check it every 2 - 4 weeks for curiosity

Sie haben 454 neue Nachrichten:
Posteingang(64), Bulk(390)

Even for that it uses about 1% of my allocated 100 MB - but since I use that for signing up in forums I don't visit or for *cough* some ROM and other pages, it doesn't matter

My main email account is hidden and I didn't get any spam mail like that. Though I also have 1 GB there and anyway use Thunderbird - plus I show emails as plain text only

Posted on 11-12-04 12:29 AM, in ZSNES Question Link
Usually ZSNES dumps all screenshots into the same directory where the ROM(s) are, simple and known.
An easy, but uncomfortable (space-wasting) way is simply to copy ROMs, save files and states to the desired directory and to run the ROMs in this directory

You also might peek into ZSNES' config file zsnesw.cfg, near the end is that:

SaveDirectory =

; Game directory. This is the directory where the GUI starts at.
; ZSNES automatically writes the current directory here upon exit.

GameDirectory = C:\DOKUMENTE UND EINSTELLUNGEN\SURLENT\EIGENE DATEIEN\EMULATION\ROMS\SNES

I'm too lazy to try out to fill in the entry for SaveDirectory, but you might try it. Backup your cfg beforehand if something happens.

On my old machine I had Winamp 2.81 ..here is Winamp 2.81 installed, too
As for emulation at least it will stay in the ROM hacking scene.

Many plugins for audio are written in handy .dlls for Winamp 2.x or 3.x, sure there are standalons players like Super Jukebox for SPC files, but it is more than convenient to have anything located in one main player - plus the older versions use very little of RAM and are simply great due to their playlist ability, Disk Writer plugin and such

Abandon Media Player - that nasty thing wants to send data to Microsoft when open (I set my firewall to deny it, unless I'm needing a codec) or simply use Media Player Classic from sourceforge

Posted on 11-13-04 09:20 PM, in Silent Editing Link
In phpBBs, there is silent editing available for a certain time after submission (and also only as long you still have the last reply in that thread) - in one I'm a mod and I noticed there is NO entry when a staff member edits something (for the most of the time - like when there are ROM links etc.)
But I _always_ put my "Edited by Surli" into that post in italics - honesty ist self-explanatory since it might be abused.
If here silent editing is enabled for everyone, for example a staff member in Board Moderator status could abuse that to kick out a hated user (although that never must happen, of course).

I edit my posts often to remove small grammar mistakes or to add forgotten letters - I don't care if someone might think "Omfg, that ass edits his posts again, omgsucklol", since I'm no native English citizen

I recommend to create a slipstreamed Windows XP installation disc with all the SP2 files included. It takes some time, but I think after a fresh install it causes less problems than installing SP2 on an older XP installation.

I got that computer four weeks ago - The Windows XP install CD included Service Pack 1a - I simply installed SP2 offline from another CD immediately after XP installation and never experienced any problem later.

Edit: Created my slipstreamed disc now. With file checking after the burning process in Nero 6 and the integration of SP2 into Win XP install root directory, it took maybe 15 minutes - no long time -> part stroke out above

Instead of

it might simply contain the last editor, date and maybe the number of times the post was edited.

so the last line might change to

But there are other things more important than that *cough editpoll.php cough*

I am on Windows XP SP2, needed IE only after a fresh install to get an up-to-date firewall and antivirus and didn't get any malware. The last download done in IE was the Mozilla Firefox Win32 installer.

Firefox needs five seconds to start up after I booted (since it cannot be cached beforehand, like when you shut down FF and reopen it again), but IE lacks many of the features I miss. Mouse gestures, tabs, adblock etc. which is easily configured by the extension manager.

The Mozilla Suite has E-mail and ChatZilla included of course, but I rather like plain Firefox and Thunderbird as stand-alone applications, since Mozilla Suite takes a lot more of RAM.
And Firefox improved significantally since 1.0PR when it comes about rendering speed of pages.
