As long as we support Israel in their conflict with Palestine, we will have conflict with lots of Muslim countries, which mostly happen to be in the Middle East. We can't occupy Iraq forever, and once we leave, more corruption will follow, and likely another dictator will arise. This opinion, of course, is just based on our trying to instill democracy into South America in the past. If it won't work in already Christian countries, then why would it work in Muslim-based countries that generally tend to hate our guts? If you really want to have a productive overthrow of a dictator that can go somewhere, North Korea has a huge famine due to KJI's unwillingness for foreign aid of any kind, and lack of concern for the issue. North Koreans are on average 4 inches shorter than South Koreans due to malnutrition and, well, no food. Often North Koreans drop out of school in like, the 6th or 7th grade, just so they can find food. Plus, KJI is waving his arms up and down and shoving the fact that he has 1 WMD down our throats. The guy took WMD as a priority over food and water. Why don't we go there to help their people? Much more of the world would be at our back, as there are plenty of other countries that would be happy to give aid to the people there. People are constantly trying to flee from that country, and only sometimes are they successful. In these countries that we are trying to instill capitalism in right now, VERY few people are trying to run (yes, even from the ones we havent gone into yet).

So if our interest was to free the people from tyranny, our first objective would be North Korea, then Afghanistan probably, then the rest of the Middle East, with Iran being first on the list. But the priority list right now is Iraq, then Iran, then Afghanistan (what is really being done to correct the corruption that happened in the most recent elections there?). So, while I cannot tell exactly what the motives are, it certainly is NOT to free people in need, because there are places like where we are that need the help more urgently, and we know that.

Um, not all of CA has wealth. If you happen to be going to a private institution (which I assume you are, because they offer Jap), yes, the teachers are paid a little more there. But in the public schools, the funding is diminishing, and therefore the salaries are becoming less on average.

Btw, how the hell do you know exactly how much your teachers make?

Once we have milked the place of all its resources that we can get, then what will be left for the people we are supposedly trying to help? And all I was saying was that the motive was something other than helping free the people in need, because the priority list of countries would be different if this was the case. But yes, it's hard to get into NK, perhaps even harder than it will be to get out of the Middle East.

And yes, I have to hand it to you, good point

This is in response to like, older posts, but I feel somewhat of an obligation to defend those that I felt shouldn't have been demoted (and there are only 2 that come right to mind, though there are likely others)

Rydain: If she wasn't active, then how was she able to both warn me for being a bastard and fix a problem with another person's account recently? She does way more than most users can see.

Yiffy Kitten: Oh wait, he had a pretty good self-defense already, so no need for me to lower its quality in any way.

And I actually agreed with the promotion of Toxic, just in case anyone wanted to know.

Ok, and as for the holes left because there are certain un-modded forums or whatever:

1) If full mods stay active, it shouldn't be a big deal.
2) If 1 does not come true, then the decision to fully demote admins and full mods instead of putting them as local mods will have proven to bite the decision makers in the ass.

Michael Crichton also recently released State of Fear, no? I liked Jurassic Park, but it would be obvious for me to say that a few environmentalists, including myself, disagree with a few things in that new novel I mentioned (it slams the global warming theories, basically).

I'm reading Huck Finn and Catcher in the Rye. Not like that matters.

Hahahah. I'm not in your pool, but I picked pretty well today. My god, I would have been perfect if Creighton would have pulled it off.

Now, I need NC St's guards to show up tomorrow.

Oh, and UAB sucks, btw. Anyone that has to have a slight scare after a 61-35 lead REALLY sucks.

So, I will finish my day by saying, "DAMN YOU CREIGHTON, DAMN YOU"

Oh, and Tex Tech over the Zags. Boo ya. It WILL happen.

Posted on 03-19-05 03:59 AM, in Global Warming, Fact or Myth? Link
My take on it:

Ozone depletion and global warming are completely seperate issues.

Ozone depletion is much easier to correct, because 1) we pretty much have specific sources of it that we can point to, and these mostly include chloroflourocarbons (CFCs). 2) the ozone layer restores itself over time, and we know this. The ozone layer blocks ultraviolet light from entering the troposphere, but unfortunately, like Steak said, Ozone (or O3) is not very stable. The materials in CFCs will easily break up a particle of ozone, thus making the natural layer formed by gravitiy weaker. As of now, it appears, if we were to completely stop using CFCs around the world, then it would be about 15 years until the layer restored completely. So we still have a ways to go, but it seems that the solution to this problem is pretty much right in front of our eyes.

Global warming has a lot more questions, and that is why it would be a lot harder to "solve," if possible. Pretty much people have accepted the fact that greenhouse gases go up into the atmosphere and trap infrared heat coming into the earth and make sure it stays there. It has generally been accepted that there is a natural global warming cycle for the Earth, just as there is a natural cycle which brings about ice ages (but the former has more to do with the greenhouse gases, and the latter with the Earth's tilt). If this would hold true, then there isn't really anything that can be done to reverse it. However, the debate is whether humans are accelerating the process by releasing more greenhouse gases (namely carbon dioxide from a variety of sources, and methane from cattle). While it seems to be going at a rate of only 1 degree per 150 years or so for the entire world, this is pretty significant. Antartica has actually gone up about 6 degrees in the last 150 years, so records have said. If humans actually are accelerating the process, then the imminent global climate change will only come faster. Even if the Earth's average temperature were to rise only 2 degrees from what it is now, that could shift areas where we can grow crops more northward or southward, which could result in smaller yields. Also, if it reached that point, then of course people will actually have to start worrying about whether the ice caps can completely melt or not. It has been decided that if they ever were to melt, then sea level would be 50 feet higher. This would make much of the South in the USA completely underwater, including Florida and Louisiana. Also, some places that are normally a little warmer could become a lot colder, and some cold places may even warm up because ocean currents would change drastically. England would become about as cold as Alaska if the current going to it were to be halted due to the ice caps melting. Some animals in the ocean may not be able to live there any more because their zone of tolerance as far as tempeature may be extremely limited. In other words, we would have a LOT of things to worry about if the average temperature of the world heated up a little.

I think that while we may not know whether we are accelerating the process or not, we should be taking measures as if we were, because it could only be safer. We should be shifting away from fossil fuels and try to focus more on use of natural, renewable fuel sources. If we have any chance of slowing this thing down enough where we don't have to worry about the climate changing too drastically, then we should go for it. Even if it is inevitable that it will happen, we could have more time to think about solutions if the temperature wasn't rising more than usual. Maybe we might even be able to last about 20,000 years or so... then humans would have the fun of deciding what to do so that we don't freeze our asses off forever!

So, that's how I view this whole fiasco.

EDIT: oh, and those people that think that we could one day get to be as bad as Venus are full of it. While a volcano does release a LOT of greenhouse gases when it fully erupts, it would take a LOT of those at once to get us to that point. Venus probably did have a ton of volcanoes that erupted a lot, and thus the planet had a runaway greenhouse effect, which would explain why it is constantly around 800 degrees plus in temperature. But a few volcanic eruptions would probably only make it rise a little. I don't see how some of these weirdos can think that humans are capable of pulling something so catastrophic off.

Why wasn't there a friggin topic about this BEFORE? Hell, they voted on it like, 2 days ago.

Anyway, what do you think about drilling for oil in America? They already voted yes (51-49). Do you agree or disagree? Did you think it was a hasty decision, or do you believe that it is what we must do at this point? Do you think that big ferocious polar bears should actually be viewed as cute and cuddly for some reason, or do you think that big hunky men who do the drilling are sexy beasts?

Thoughts people. Again, I'm surprised no one else thought to make a topic on it in the weeks leading up to the vote or the day of the vote.

I was jacking off long before any of you were in message boards.

Anyway, I think my first was this shit place called SM128C, which I'm sure has died ever since I left (well, actually, I obliterated the board myself, and then left when I made sure all members couldnt get in). That was like, 2 years ago or maybe longer. My second board was some place that I forget the name of, and then some other place that I forgot the name of, then the admin there directed me here to get Mario Adventure, and then I was here. Then I posted a lot, got banned a lot, posted a lot, left, posted a little, left, posted a lot, got banned a lot, posted a little, left, and now I'm back.... boy has that been a soap opera. And I've visited a couple other boards during the years just for the hell of it.

I believe nuclear, solar, and hydrogen research will take us much further than fossil fuels ever can in the development of efficient energy management practices.

Problems:

Nuclear: we really don't know what to do with the waste. We hav to store it somewhere, because it just can't be "dumped." It is mostly being stored in the plants they are made in right now, but that can't last forever. There are several places they are thinking about storing it, and one place is in some mines near Las Vegas. However, like all the other places on the list, Las Vegas is taking a "not in my backyard" stance.

Solar: do you know how much a solar panel costs? Solar plants work out in the desert for small towns, but you really need a LOT of panels or reflectors to power anything significant. And there doesn't seem to be a point of time when people will be able to afford solar cars, because that would be a lot of solar panels as well. Also, those things are small.

Hydrogen: The only reasonable way to get hydrogen, as it is not found by itself in nature, is to break it away from water molecules. Coincidently, it takes more energy to seperate it from these molecules than the amount of energy the fuel itself would put out. Thus, you've actually lost energy, and that isn't a logical thing to do.

Then again, you are right that these choices will end up being better than fossil fuels.

Ethanol and electricity are also being looked at, and are being used in conjunction with petrol in cars already. Problem with ethanol is that even 10% concentrations have been known to corrode engines, and the problem with electric is that electricity needs a source, and it might be made from plants that use fossil fuels. Thus, all pollution and such will just move from a dispersed source to a point source.

However, ethanol and other bio products have some promise because they would close the carbon loop, thus having the CO2 they emit go back into plants instead of getting caught up in the atmosphere and contributing to the greenhouse effect.

My biggest problem, aside from the fact that this action WILL result in the obliteration of an ecosystem and its inhabitants, is that we are being too hasty, as hahahalalala said. We just voted to go up and take some more oil (apparently as pre-emptive measures for gas prices) BEFORE using any incentives for conserving fuel, such as tax breaks for hybrid car owners or people who only use so much gas in a year, or raising gas taxes... we also don't have a whole lot of groups that go and educate people/companies about flouresence (sp?), heat recycling, and other energy saving methods which would cut down oil consumption. Also, we aren't really in an energy crisis anyway. Most of Europe is much worse off than we are. Remember, we basically own Iraq, and they have the second largest oil reserves in the world.

EDIT: my god, we need some neocons here so that there's actually an argument and not just a bunch of agreement.

DAILY??? Well, it rarely gets to a daily basis when I take so many hiatuses (or is it hiati?) and/or bans.

Acmlm's and TKZ (the people that visit Jack-AI's forum would know about that place, likely) I visit whenever I'm on the net. Google seems to get around, too. And my school's website because my friggin AP Environmental Science teacher makes us download crap from there instead of handing it out.

Oh, and some site with news on it, but that's only when I havent read the paper, which isnt often.

Yep, that covers it.
