Hello fellow newbies/non-existent 'oldbies' who are most assuredly not reading this thread. For anyone who cares, I'm Zem's older brother. I just wandered into the room while he was returning to the board after a year's absence, so I jumped on the boat. Good morning! Don't get the coffee, I avoid diahrretics.

I wasn't going to vote until I saw Boo Berry's campaign poster. Those heavy lidded eyes won me over.

Vote Boo for emperor!

Akira straight kicks ghetto booty. It was funny without being too frantic, and went deeper than most anime was going at the time. I mean, it ends with a big bang!
Hewn from a giant screaming cancer blob!! Plus, the outer space sequences have no sound. (beginning to ramble) That's another thing about the movie that rocks: the realism, from the revolutionary fighters to the gory riot control scenes. A blueprint for the future, one might say (blah blah ramble ramble).

Yeah.

I work at gamestop, and therefore saw this game for what it was, i.e. another extension of Nintendo's (and, lately, Square/Enix's) intertwined good and bad qualities.

I'm just one man with one imbecilic opinion, but the way I see it, things break down like this. Nintendo has a commitment to producing really good, deep, intricate games, and simultaneously executing horrible, insidious marketing scams on little innocent children. "Mommy, I can't play Crystal Chronicles with my REGULAR game boy advance, which cost you one hundred US dollars, I need the all-new upgraded Game Boy Advance SP Trademark Copyright Registered Infringement Protection Lawyer Death!" (Don't get me wrong, I like GBA, and I dig my SP).

Bottom line, I enjoyed crystal chronicles, even though I didn't play it nearly to the extent that Maxtwo did (props, dude). Once you hit up a dungeon for the third or fourth time, things get pants-pissingly frantic, which is something the revewiers of the game didn't play far enought to experience, which hurt the game in the polls. The bucket is not hard to manage, in fact, the carrier basically gets to act as the leader of the party. The teamwork aspect is well worked out (spell fusion, etc.) and requires constant communication, like great co-op games should (Halo, anyone?). However, I felt dirty while playing it endlessly because I knew in my heart that the whole project was half cooked-up by Nintendo in a shameless effort to sell more Game Boys. Bad marketing department! No annual bonus!

Picture this McDonald's commercial in the near future (when fat morons are beyond the reach of higher education)

Slow camera dolly through a busy chemical lab. Many attractive scientist types in white smocks with wireframe glasses work tirelessly over various test tubes with bubbling chemicals.
Man in White Smock (with wireframe glasses) : Welcome to the McDonald's laboratory! Here, dedicated scientists work tirelessly over various test tubes to bring you the most tasty, yet healthy, and fast foods in the nation! Over 300 trillion sold!!
Fade to smiling female scientist w/nice cleavage in her smock. She stands over a petri dish filled with blue liquid. Holding a sterilized dropper, she drips a bit of pink fluid into the dish. An all-beef patty blooms majestically in the dish within a few seconds.
Voiceover : Here's how we at McDonald's Labs work everyday to feed your wonderful face!!
Fade to 10 Million dollar Pixar animation of a smiley faced 'taste molecule' interacting with ecstatic 'taste buds'. Waves of orgasmic pink pleasure wash over huge obese cartoon character
Voiceover : Here's how McDonald's food interacts with your body to produce the great tasting sensation that's taking the nation by storm!
Theme music. American Flags. President Bush looking resolute, yet happy as he takes a big juicy chomp out of a Big Mac
Female Voiceover : I'm lovin it!

Watch and wait. When it airs, you know who to thank.

Here's the deal. I'm a 21-year old curmudgeon with no patience for series anime, as frantic and complex as it is. So, I like the old violent classics that contained intricate science fiction, politics, history, and philosophy. I know I'm not the only one on this boat, and these flicks seem to be the ones to choose from.

SO

What's your vote? I haven't even decided yet. Allow me to discuss the merits. You may skip my novel if it bores you, but I bet a lot of us feel the same way about this very important issue.

1) Akira is a very realistic depiction of society in decay. From the revolutionaries and martial law, to the biker gangs and shady genocidal/telekinetic research, the movie takes the then-burgeoning cyber-punk genre of the 80's and adds a childishly animated, yet disturbingly violent and deep flair. I don't know my history all that well, but I believe that Akira paved the way for today's manga and anime.

2) Ninja Scroll is less deep, but incredibly well-animated and has probably the best sense of humor out of the three contenders. Jubei, the wandering swordsman, can take gut-shattering punches all week long and still make straight-faced sarcastic remarks to the demons he fights. From the rock-giant to the beautiful blind swordsman's duel, the movie is packed with incredible art and beauty. I think the flick operates on the same artistic principle as a good Tarantino film. It may not have any deep philosophical texture, or realistic content, but we all love the horrific violence and gore, and the jokes touch a common nerve. Great stuff.

3) Ghost in the Shell is probably going to be the favorite of all you hackers out there, since it is much truer to the cyber-punk core than even Akira was. Also superbly animated, this movie deals with the issue of the nature of life, and consciousness. When the 'puppet master' wakes up as he's being deported by the evil corporation that spawned him and delivers his declaration of asylum as a free intelligent being, you know that somewhere in this crazy world, other drunken geeks have hashed out the idea of humans as nothing more than replicating, self-aware patterns. The movie takes that concept and adds a little humanity, while leaving the open ended possibility of machine and man co-evolving in the future. Whoa.

After my speal, my thoughts are more organized, and I've come to the realization that I can't vote for any one over the other. I'm sorry! But I encourage all of you to please pick one. And Defend your candidate from smear campaigns!!!! I must have missed some pro or con in each of these classic movies. Enjoy.

I got into a fistfight over an argument about radiation inside of microwave ovens. There's a small clearing near my house where the kids in my area get drunk, and we used to smoke out over there. Not important. Anyway, there were every manner of smashed appliances, and a friend of mine swore up and down that the ill health of the surrounding vegetation was due not to the constant river of piss with which it was watered but to the broken and derelect microwave that was sitting in one of the piles of trash. I laughed at him and asked him why the microwave would cause such a response in the environment. 'Dude, its the radiation. What are you, stupid?' I pointed out that microwaves are just higher frequency radiation than visible light. 'No shit, that's what I said. Radiation. There's these little tubes, see?' said my friend, gesturing at the internal clock batteries in the microwave. Anyway, we wound up assaulting each other, only because he's such an asshole. Later someone pissed on the microwave.

1 word.... Eratosthenes. This guy measured the circumference of the earth!!! WTF?!
Also, I'm a big fan of Archimedes. What a guy! I didn't know about the laser thing, but he did build large cranes to assault the Roman fleet. Coupled with catapults that launched boulders covered in flaming oily cloth (i.e. FIREBALLS!!!!). It's a testament to the horrible brute force of the Roman Navy that they actually won, because I'm sure he did a lot of damage.

It's kind of like every nerd's dream.....
(wavy dream sequence)
Ruler of Empire: Hey you! On the computer! We're putting you in charge of defending our nation! WITH GIANT FIREBALLS! Figure it out by tomorrow.
You: Niiiice.

Come on.

L-U-I-G-I

Not only does he *routinely* save Mario's pudgy plumber-ass, he's taller, has a thicker accent AND mustache, and GREEN FIREBALLS. Need I say more? Oh yeah, he can jump higher, and does that kicky thing with his little legs. You KNOW he's the only one getting poon from the Peach. (Besides Toad, that little jiggalo.)

As none of you know, I work at Gamestop. I was recently promoted to supervisor, which basically means I do more work, am required to rip more people off, and am more responsible for being an asshole to my former co-workers, for slightly more pay. Cash money! I am blind!

Sorry, off the subject. Here's the deal. I, and all the faithful Gamestop/Software Etc. drones around the country, am required to rack up a certain amount of reservations for various titles every day I work. My store's number of reservations must at the minimum work out to about 10% of my daily transactions, or we get in trouble. This is all well and good, or at least it would be if the reservations weren't a bullshit system. Here's how it works.

Let's say we get about 50 reservations for a title, we'll say Resident Evil: Outbreak for the sake of argument. The idea behind reserving a game is that it gaurantees that my store will hold you a copy for two days when the game ships, and that we notify you the day before its release. This would be a must for any game you wanted to get your hands on...

EXCEPT

We ALWAYS receive exactly twice as many games as we have reserves. This means that, given our 50 reservations for RE, we will recieve about 100 copies of the game on the 30th, the day before it ships.

So why reserve?

No reason whatsoever. Even if we DON'T get enough copies, you can godamned well find one at Mal-Wart, evil though they are. The ONLY case this year in which one might need to shell out for a gaurantee is the allmighty Halo II, for which my pinche store already has 350 reservations. That one we will run out of, as will Mal-Wart.

SO, I encourage all of you gamers to call your local gamestop/software etc/EB/funcoland and ask for the number of their District Manager. Call the corporate demon and tell them to start getting real about pre-orders. Don't mention me, or they'll kill my firstborn.

Oh god! Timmy! Nooooooooo!

Weak-assed wigga kids : We do! We do! Insert midwest area code and white dubs!

Uhh.. you guys don't count. Real connoiseurs don't need to give shoutouts. Anyone who's listened to Blackalicious knows where my name comes from, and if any of you knew me in person (which I highly doubt, but, you know, small world...) You'd know I'm blessed wit da gift.

I text message the homies' phones like a smack addict. Must..... touch..... buttons... predictive text... too..... cool.....

I crack the bejeezus out of my knuckles, knees, and my secondary knuckles (by wiggling them). I don't know anyone else who cracks those babies. Oh yeah, my big toes, too. I can move them independently from the rest of the piggies. So much for creationism. Also, I veeery gently grind my teeth constantly, though I'm an exceptionally un-nervous guy. Also I bite the sides of my tongue, and wiggle it in my mouth to the beat of whatever tune is playing in my head.

Ah, Colleen brought up a good point. The promos balance out all the retardation of the reserve system. If only we had more of them!! For instance, I pre-ordered RE: Outbreak despite my lack of a PS2 because we were giving away a package with a metal canteen with a biohazard symbol on it and a pimp surgical mask!!! It was sweet. I unfortunately missed out on the plush cows we were giving with harvest moon reservations. Damn it! Now what will my dog chew on?!
