As none of you know, I work at Gamestop. I was recently promoted to supervisor, which basically means I do more work, am required to rip more people off, and am more responsible for being an asshole to my former co-workers, for slightly more pay. Cash money! I am blind! Sorry, off the subject. Here's the deal. I, and all the faithful Gamestop/Software Etc. drones around the country, am required to rack up a certain amount of reservations for various titles every day I work. My store's number of reservations must at the minimum work out to about 10% of my daily transactions, or we get in trouble. This is all well and good, or at least it would be if the reservations weren't a bullshit system. Here's how it works. Let's say we get about 50 reservations for a title, we'll say Resident Evil: Outbreak for the sake of argument. The idea behind reserving a game is that it gaurantees that my store will hold you a copy for two days when the game ships, and that we notify you the day before its release. This would be a must for any game you wanted to get your hands on... EXCEPT We ALWAYS receive exactly twice as many games as we have reserves. This means that, given our 50 reservations for RE, we will recieve about 100 copies of the game on the 30th, the day before it ships. So why reserve? No reason whatsoever. Even if we DON'T get enough copies, you can godamned well find one at Mal-Wart, evil though they are. The ONLY case this year in which one might need to shell out for a gaurantee is the allmighty Halo II, for which my pinche store already has 350 reservations. That one we will run out of, as will Mal-Wart. SO, I encourage all of you gamers to call your local gamestop/software etc/EB/funcoland and ask for the number of their District Manager. Call the corporate demon and tell them to start getting real about pre-orders. Don't mention me, or they'll kill my firstborn. Oh god! Timmy! Nooooooooo! |

Gamestop has screwed some of my friends over a few times. Friend of mine wanted a game on release day. There were copies of said game CLEARLY in view, without reservations at all. He asks for a copy, and the guy at the desk says they have none without reservation. Bullshit. So he goes to EB and gets his game. Cheaper, that time.

I haven't gotten to the point where I needed a game the day it came out. Maybe HL2, but I can't run that, putting it out of the runnings. |

Ah, but when companies package bonuses with pre-orders... I've never reserved a game though. The only place here where I could do that without a hassle is EB. |

Ah, interesting. Very interesting. The last game I reserved was Neverwinter Nights. I never reserve anymore because whenever I go to Gamestop, they alway have SEVERAl copies of newly released games. Take Ninja Gaiden for example. A friend of mine was all paranoid so he reserved it. I go their the second day it's out and they have about 75 copies behind the counter. |

Ah, Colleen brought up a good point. The promos balance out all the retardation of the reserve system. If only we had more of them!! For instance, I pre-ordered RE: Outbreak despite my lack of a PS2 because we were giving away a package with a metal canteen with a biohazard symbol on it and a pimp surgical mask!!! It was sweet. I unfortunately missed out on the plush cows we were giving with harvest moon reservations. Damn it! Now what will my dog chew on?!

I bought Ruby and sapphire the day after it was released and an GBA SP. (my sister got sapphire, i'm not that type who buys two games of the same game ) And the same thing for Simcity 4, but I had hard time finding an copy first. Then I found one. Preordered Zelda the wind waker bonus disc. The game and the bonus disc is in the same cover so they can't them sepratly. I saw the game with the bonus disc for an month or two in the shops... (but then I got the game three days to early when I preordered. Which made me happy ) (edited by Kitten Yiffer on 03-16-04 04:46 PM) |

I don't see how it's as bad as you make it. If interest in a game grows, then the store makes for more orders, how is it that bad?

Gamestore employees at the local EB are forced to tell you that they are totally maxed out for reservations in an attempt to get you to reserve it CHEAP ASSES! |

I reserved Castlevania: Lament of Innocence at EB for the music CD that came with it. Those bonuses are a real nifty catch. Pre-ordering Zelda: Wind Waker gave me the bonus disc. Cool stuff like that.

That quota shouldn't be hard to reach with the bonuses and all that. Then again, there's some games that, if I worked at one of those stores and someone reserved one of them, well... I'd look at them funny. |

Even if they do come with neat things, I dunno if it's worth it. At one paticular store, all preordering is, is you give them X dollars, and upon purchase, they take that out of the cost. That would work for me, but I just haven't had the opportunity. |

Depends on the game. That's how most games work, but if you get a bonus... then you have to pre-order. They're doing that with lots of PC games now - giving away bonus game files/demos/etc. with a reservation. |

In Gamestop the money used for preordering works as store credit, so you can transfer it to another preorder. Cheap way to get free bonuses.

Multiple times at multiple Gamestop's Employee's have been complete moron's to me. One time I called in "Do you guys have Final Fantasy III for Snes?" The response. "I dunno, your going to have to come in and look for yourself." That's seriously awesome customer service. And my Gamestop's work like you described Toxic, I've had Halo 2 reserved for months with a 5 dollar payment, when I go in I should only have to pay 45$. |

Actually, I kind of know the manager. (I think it may be him) Some older guy, 40's maybe who collects FF games. I would sometimes just talk a bit about FF games with him, but then again when there's younger people working there more around my age, all they talk about is drugs. |

Ah... I haven't preordered in a long time. Although, I'll probably have to for Halo II. Preordering, in my opinion, isn't necessary, unless the game/whatever is very popular and will get sold out in 5 seconds after it is released,
