Bleh. Buy your own parts (best if you can get them online, stores will often rip you off so much you'll vomit) and put it together yourself. It's not too hard (as long as they're compatible) and WAY cheaper.

XeoIQ? (Just kidding, put down the gun...)

I do that to my brother... he likes to write 'Zero' everywhere. I like to add 'IQ' after it.

Well I ended up chucking those headphones, they died completely. They did something really weird, though. I was listening to a song and the voice stopped! Everything else sounded fine, but there was no lyrics.

Also I once had a CD player with a jammed motor, that would stop after 10 minutes. Eventually it completely spazzed out, just moving everything back and forth. Killed a fresh pair of batteries in about 8 seconds.

There's big storm warnings in New York. Severe thunderstorms. They kept flashing warnings across the screen during the Simpsons, complete with sound. NY isn't too far from here, so we might get a decent rainfall if nothing else. (It did rain a tiny bit today; been looking like storm weather all day.) The weather's been good so far, though.

Having no living expenses is nice, sure, but what good is it with no income? And to get income, you need to work.
But at least you can keep 100% of it, until you move out.

I forget if a real NES does it, and I'm too lazy to hook up mine, but all emulators I know of do it. You can see it in hack screenshots and such.

Oh, if you're going to try to dump it manually through the mem viewer, you'll need to know the 64DD's address... Normally you can only view RAM (80000000-803FFFFF), but these codes (works with any game) will let you view any address:

81791DF6 0000
81791E02 0000
81791E06 FFFF
81791E12 FFFF
81791E32 0000
81791E36 0000
81791E3A FFFF
81791E3E FFFF

Note that if you try to view an invalid address the system will crash. Also, you can try to read ROM (B0000000-B3FFFFFF, IIRC), which gives a weird effect... It lags, and bytes get repeated.

Another trick is that you can use the Text Search as a limited Hex Search with this. Go to 807E9D34 and write in whatever bytes you want to search for, then do a text search. Just keep some things in mind:
  • Using any value below 0x20 will crash the system!
  • The search is case-insensitive, so if you search for something like 0x8041, it'll match 0x8061 as well. This only applies to values between 0x41-0x5A and 0x61-0x7A.
  • No matter what you search for, you'll get at least one result at 807E9D34.

I have to agree with Disch. The point of emulation is to do things exactly how the real system does them. If you make an NES emulator that can render 3D models and run a billion instructions a second, even if it does run NES games, it's no longer an emulator. It's a scripting engine that's NES-compatible. Your games won't work on any other emulator, let alone a real NES; you may as well be making a PC game.

Now if you can find a way to do these things on a real NES (and no fair replacing the CPU/PPU; addons/cart tricks only ), then sure, go ahead and put them in emulators. The point, though, is that an emulator does what an NES does, so if an NES can't do it, neither should an emulator. (This of course doesn't apply to useful things like save states and frameskip, because these features are transparent to the game; you can't design a game that relies on them or even knows they exist.) If a game does one thing on an emulator, and a different thing on an NES, the emulator is defective.

Posted on 07-27-05 08:05 AM, in Expanding the Overworld Link
I really like the idea of having a level for an overworld, and have tried to do it but had little success.

The game uncompresses the overworld into SRAM though, doesn't it? Here's an idea:

1) Design 2 overworlds in 2 different ROMs. Make sure that there is only one path between the two.
2) Copy the overworld from the second ROM into an unused space in the first.
3) Use an ASM hack to load whatever overworld the player is about to enter.

I'd do it by creating a 'portal level' between the two overworlds. There would be no direct path between the two. Hard to explain, so here's a pic:

Mario starts on overworld 1, which ends at the bottom-right level. The level contains 2 pipes, and 2 columns of invisible blocks (shown as red and yellow blocks here). When he passes through the red blocks, overworld 1 is loaded. When he passes through the yellow ones, overworld 2 is loaded. (You might make this level longer, and put a thick patch of these blocks, if loading takes a while. That way the player would take long enough to get there that the loading would have finished.) Then he exits through the right pipe and ends up on overworld 2. He can even go back the opposite way to overworld 1. (This could make a really cool time travel/alternate dimension effect, if both OWs were similar. Or you could just make one massive world. ) Basically, it's the same idea as world 5 in Super Mario Bros 3.

Only problem I can think of that may arise is event conflicts. (That, and actually copying the second overworld into the ROM - dunno where OW data is or how it's laid out - and loading it. )

That image doesn't want to show up (maybe because my connection keeps cutting out), but looking at your site...
  1. Scorebar is miscoloured and wastes space with the 'Dark World' text (unless that actually changes to tell what world you're in) and 'CASH' (just use a dollar sign or coin icon). FG is too bright and purple stuff... shouldn't be purple. People often press L/R by accident, you should ensure it won't cause a problem (you can just disable that stupid scrolling thing entirely). Snow is good, assuming it's animated.
  2. Cool, but BG is plain and clouds are a bit bright.
  3. WAAAAAAY too bright. Just plain bad palette, really. Very bad use of translucency.
  4. Too bright, and vines coming out of plants' mouths. Nice ice blocks though, and that green one and the ? blocks look good too. (Lemme guess, Mario/Luigi blocks? Just keep in mind that if Mario enters the level and Luigi finishes or dies, or vice-versa, there'll be problems.) Awesome Mario, too.
  5. Looks good except for the arrow sign.
  6. Nice mushroom. BG is quite confusing. FG is too faded, making it look like the BG.
  7. Same here.
  8. Nice, I like the 'up to your head in snow' effect. (How can you see small Mario though? And I certainly hope you weren't evil enough to hide enemies in there. )
  9. An ice block in lava, WTF? Try changing the colour (and graphics if possible) to make the lava look like really cold water. (They did it in Mario 64. )
  10. Too dark, can't tell WTF is in that cloud.
  11. Looks nice. This actually isn't too dark, even though the last one was, because the stars complement it well and there's no trees.
  12. Too dark again.
  13. Not bad. The darkness looks good here, too; it gives an impression that it's completely pitch black, but still lets you see around the place.
  14. ...WTF? Those black clouds look like crap, and I can't tell what the hell the BG is supposed to be.

It's buggy, slow, poorly designed, uses an obscure database format, and is written in Delphi.

Anyway, for conversions: Start -> Run -> "Calc" -> OK -> View -> Scientific -> Hex -> [type a number] -> Dec.

IMO, SMB3 is the 4th-best game ever behind Crono Trigger, Mario 64 and Zelda OoT.

I just had to ram my stomach against the corner of a table to adminster a sort of "auto-Heimlech" and I can control the muscles in my neck really well (being a wrestler in my weight division...Well, when you have a lot of weight going down on your neck...you get used to that kind of stuff and learn from it) I managed to dislodge the piece of food.

Ooh. I almost choked once but it turned out I wasn't in danger at all. I was eating this really stringy cheese thing and part of it went down my throat. I couldn't get it out, wash it down, etc... Finally I realized I was still holding the other end, and just pulled the whole thing right out.
