Well would you look at that. Apparently a few people in Thailand did know about the earthquake and still nothing got done:

BANGKOK, Thailand (Reuters) -- Thailand has fired its chief meteorologist and opened an investigation into why his department failed to issue a tsunami warning which might have saved thousands of lives, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced.

"When a quake measured at 8.9-9.0 on the Richter scale struck in Sumatra, it was widely known tsunami can happen. But why weren't there any alerts? I really want to know the truth," Thaksin told reporters Tuesday.

A day after deadly waves devastated the country's Andaman Sea coast, Meteorological Department chief Suparerk Tansriratanawong had told reporters Thailand had not been hit by a tsunami in more than 300 years and had no reason to expect one.

But the English-language Nation newspaper quoted an unnamed member of the department last week as saying a tsunami alert was not issued for fear of hurting the important tourist industry at the peak season if it turned out to be false.

During the investigation, to be led by Information & Communications Technology Minister Surapong Suebwonglee, Suparerk will help set up a national early warning system for all natural disasters, a government spokesman said.

No Asian country issued a warning of the Dec. 26 tsunami, triggered by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake off Indonesia, which killed nearly 150,000 people as it crashed ashore around the Indian Ocean.

Thai expert says he tried to warn the government a deadly tsunami might be sweeping towards tourist-packed beaches, but couldn't find anyone to take his calls.

Well that's just great.

You don't wanna live in Japan. Trust me.

What would be the problem with living in Japan?

Not even after a fucking 9.0 on the Ricter scale, eh?

I know that it would be impossible for the US to match many other countries in donations per GDP since they are bigger they also have more poverty and homeless people. But 1.2$~ per GDP?

So Craw, I quote again;
"Norway's pledge would come out to approximately $39.50 per citizen. The U.S. pledge of $350 million comes out to $1.19 per person."

The amount per citizin doesn't mean a whole lot when you look at the population difference. Norways 5 million verus United States 300 million. While America may not have done enough, it doesn't mean they didn't donate almost twice the amount that Norway did. Sure our dollar per citizen is low, but shit. If we did donate 39.50 per citizen it would be 1,185,000,000. Which would be nice but realisticly. No country is going to donate that much.

I'm tired of everyone being so harsh on America.

What is the deathtoll up to now? I've heard its about 180,000 but I haven't confirmed this...

Ziff: We do not.

Trapster: 1. Japan has a very strict caste system. 2. Not every giant earthquake means a tsunami, though. Even if there was an earthquake, if there hadn't been a tsunami in three centuries, would you REALLY expect one?

I thought we surpassed America.

Then again, at least we're guaranteed to pay up (at the expense of no tax breaks in the next budget though... yeah, we're TOO generous).

Tax cuts are stupid Colleen. They only help the rich in Canada, because, if you look at Ontario/Alberta. The standard of living has gone down for the people in the low income bracket, which has dramatically risen due to the tax cuts which force us into paying for more and more once government services.

Yeah, Trapster, Kyouji is right. It is VERY hard for white men to make it anywhere in Japan due to the still standing caste system.

Yeah, but you KNOW that they're going to say that they were going to do this, this and this for the middle class in the next budget but couldn't; and we'll never hear about those breaks ever again.

Well, there're a hell of alot more aussies dead now. And over 1000 missing, so I dunno.

Australia's donating $200,000,000 a year for 5 years, so yeah. And a shit-load of fundraising events have been going on lately, and they rack up quite abit. But anyway!
