what is that graphic when you get a bunch of lives? is it a crown or what? the sprite isnt used anywhere else in the game.. you'd think they'd just make it a 1 or something

Yeah it's only used for the lives. when you get ten or more life it appears...

And if you get more than twenty. It glitches. I have only seen that in hacks thought... (like Acmlm's )

when you say it glitches, do you mean it starts displaying weird sprites? ive seen that happen when people get a bunch of lives in 3-1 with the koopa shells on the steps in the original

Because they were too lazy to make the number of lives two digits?

Yeah, after (crown)9, you get into letters of the alphabet, then weird symbols which are actually parts of the graphics used in the game...

And if you get 128 or more lives, the game interprets it as a negative number. You lose.

Just guess the creators didn't expect you to get over 20 lives in a run.

I guess the game uses the 1-9th graphic in the game, and when it gets to nine and goes up one more it uses the next graphic up from that and it is the crown. After the crown, it will start to use pieces of the title screen and when you get to 128, I guess it goes back to the beginning of the graphics and it interprets it as you having no lives.

Actually, you have a point there...it's not like SMB3 or SMW where it's possible to rack up zillions of lives easily...in SMB1 there were only four (I believe):
- 1-UP mushroom.
- Getting 100 coins.
- Kicking a koopa at enough enemies.
- Stomping enough enemies without hitting the ground (staircase trick in 3-1).

In SMB3 there was also the cards, spade houses, 3-UP blocks, etc. and of course more coins and 1-UP's.

Actually, I believe there were 256 graphic tiles...the reason you die at 128 is because that is binary 10000000, and the leftmost bit was considered a negative sign (this is known as "signed" numbering; "unsigned" numbering would just treat it as another bit). Therefore, instead of 128 lives, the game sees -128, and the next time you lose a life, the game tests if the number of lives <= 0 to see if there is a game over. Since the lives counter is interpreted as a negative number, you lose.

I remember messing around with the ASM for that before

If the life count is below 10, it'll use a blank tile followed by tile number [amount of lives] ... otherwise it'll display a crown, followed by tile number [lives - 10] ... and since the tile order goes like this:

0123456789ABCDEF
GHIJKLMNOPQRSTUV
WXYZ various symbols
and other graphics from
the game go here

Now, why didn't they just implement a 2 digit life count (very well possible, it'd only take a few more bytes of code, I was able to ASM hack that by only removing part of the world display above it)? I don't really know ... but the highest I got without any trick (like in 3-1) was only 14 lives, so I'm sure they never expected to see [crown]A and such But they could still have made it 1 so that 10-19 at least look right ... I guess they just wanted to make it look special

Maybe it was planned that the crown was used for something else first...

Usually there is alot of ideas which get abonden during development.
