That's impossible, layer 4 can't be used unless all layers are in 2BPP mode. As I understand, it's the same basic setup as SMW: Layer 1 is the level, 2 is the BG, and 3 is either more BG stuff (big moving clouds, etc) or things in front of the level (flowers in 1-1), usually not very detailed since it can only do 2BPP. In SMW, layer 3 was the scorebar, but since in YI that's hidden during the game, they can use it for special effects.

Son of a Bitch! It is Layer 3 . I could have swore it was Layer 4 that I was disabling and enabling all this time, but now that you siad it was Layer 3, the Game proved me wrong.
Damm it (oh well, the Extra BG can only be in 2bpp format afterall ).

But the same concept that I mentioned to edit/view the two BG Layers (which was to Disable one Layer, while working on the other, and then to switch) in the Editor is still the easiest way to accuratly edit them (If you have a better idea, go ahead and post it).

http://img58.photobucket.com/albums/v176/Darkmatt/ms-dm.jpg (C&P this into your web browser)

I made this when I saw that. I just wanted to inform you that I like people that gives
out the source, maybe it's just because programmers want to learn from you.
There's just the problem of forgetting who you got help from.

Caption: *Holding Spray Can* What? You think I'd did it?

On to other news, when you're into the editor, spend your time coding the bloody
thing. When you're not, post your progres here. Just giving you some hints.

(No offense by the piccie. I just didn't like what it said)

...dude, it was poking fun at Microsoft. For one, communism isn't bad. Totalitarianism is. I'm Marxist after all. Am I bad?

Anyway, it said a friendly reminder from your friends at Microsoft or whatever for a reason. It was making fun of them more than anything. Nothing needed to be done to the pic to imply that it was ok to use open source.

Open source is fine, I think, so long as the original author isn't working on it anymore. Otherwise people can start taking it over and pretending that they made it.

Now, I might be contradicting myself, you might say. Someone else took the source of FCE Ultra (I think, don't bother correcting me, I don't care) and added to it, but he made sure the original author had his glory as well. This is totally fine. But there's always the jerk that claims it as their own.

I just think open source isn't very safe...

The reason open source works is that people can easily find out who actually made things. The only way a rip-off artist could get a decent following would be to change every instance of the author's name and program's name (it's very easy to miss one) then start a seperate community. That won't get many people and as soon as one of the community members googles for something about the game it hacks the whole scheme will come crumbling down.

I wouldn't worry about people stealing your editor, but I also wouldn't bother releasing source untill it's up and running.

Ack, this thread is a real pain in the a**... I mean, 8 full pages and no summary at all... I heavily recommend you to bundle all the screenshot, status report etc. available yet on the headpost (1st one).
And yes, is the name stuff already locked down? I'd suggest "Yamsle" aka "YaMSLE - Yet another Mario Series Level Editor". Or what about "yikes" - "Yoshi's Island kewl editor stuff"

Have fun & keep working (looking forward to it),
Blacky.

8 pages and no progress other than a GUI.

There's nothign to show, really. Just a few crappy buttons and a LM-like interface, with everything still blank and non-functional.

I don't see how it got so many replies...

Very simple, people want this editor. They want to hack SMW2, and this is how they can do it. Either way, the interest is probably a big encouragement to Chaosflare.

Encouragement isn't always enough. You have to remember that it does take a lot of time to develop a full-featureed editor. Without free time, this project may wind up on the back burner.
