Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced.

If you're lucky there may be a color correction tab in there.

If not...

Have you tried to start Diablo II and then shut it off?

I know that on some games everything get's brighter when I use alt+tab, but only as long as the program is running.

Start Diablo II and check the brightness settings ingame, called gamma or something.

Do you know which video card you have?

The entire system crashed? I would blame the video card.

My guess is your computer crashed, and you can kiss it goodbye. Either that, your video card is a mess. One way or another, a game like D2 is bound to cause issues. That's why I stopped using it.

That doesn't make any sense at all. And I would really doubt that his computer "crashed" if everything's simply brighter than normal.

I would suspect something with the video card but I don't think that it's a permanent problem. Maybe you could re-install your video card or display drivers.

I would boot into a Linux live disk and see if the problem is software or hardware related.
