The game should've been AO already! For chrissake. There is something TERRIBLY WRONG WITH THOSE GAMES!

YOU KILL PROSTITUTES FOR GODSAKE. GOD DAMMIT.

This just shows the problem with the ESRB rating system. It is stupid and doesn't work. They need to rethink it. They need to have it so that AO doesn't mean porno game.
They need to make a seperate sort of rating...An XXX rating if you will!

With their new stupid ratings like E 10+, may as well make another AO 19+ one!

Yeah.
Or let States set the guidelines for ratings or something.

Rydain: Right away the fact that she bought the game for her 14-year old should be enough to get the case thrown out of court.

Ziff: The last thing I want is government intervention (state or federal) regarding game ratings.

Yeah, I'd think any sane judge would laugh her right out of the room. I'm wondering how the fudge she got a lawyer to go along with her stupidity, though.

And I completely agree with your comment to Ziff. I support government regulations when they fix an actual problem of public safety. For instance, meat packing plants in the United States used to have abysmal sanitation. (Reference Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, which is public domain and available at various online book archives. Just don't read it while you're eating. ) Food safety regulations were passed to deal with this problem. That's fine and dandy. On the other hand, media with violent and sexual content is not inherently damaging. You're not going to get sick and die from playing a video game where the object is to go on a criminal rampage. It's understandable that parents would want to keep this material away from their children, but that's what being a parent entails. Government resources should not be pissed away to nerf the world and pander to people who are too farking lazy to exert control over what comes into their house and to teach kids the difference between real and make-believe (and the basic concept that hurting other people is Bad, Umkay).

Until the ESRB can clean up ship...and make their rating system even a bit more...you know...less asinine...I'd rather some more stringent controls on games.

Kids are going to play Rapemaster 64000, watch Disembowling Hindu Goddess 8, listen to I Only Shoot Cops While on Coke, read Mein Kampf (German poop porn edition) and smoke cigarettes. At least putting some sort of system that prevents them from getting their hands on it readily will slow it all down.

I am currently punching my wall and banging my head against my desk in rage and anger at the idiocy of the modern consumer populace.

It's their own fucking fault for buying the game. This is a lot like alcohol... You can buy alcohol easily. You don't HAVE to be a drunkard, but you can buy it. You don't HAVE to drink a little bit, you don't HAVE to drink at all. But you can buy it.

There is a reason why I prefer Pegi Ziff.

And GTA is the highest rating on PEGI already, and it already have the sex symbol for references.

In other words, it's not going to change at all.

Exactly, but you see...The ESRB has the collective intelligence as this cup on my desk with mould in the bottom of it.

The American system sucks and it is too easy for the kids to get games. The parents are all retards. I swear. RETARDS. They should be forced to read a god damned pamphlet on the game before buying it for kids. Screw social libertarians saying that guns in the hands of kids is the single most wholesome form of society and love. Screw them. People who lack maturity and are impressionable (namely kids and 95% of the people at this board) should not be given access to ridiculously violent games. Plain and simple.

But then again, American politicians aren't much smarter than the retards that buy these games. So yeah. You guys are boned. Get ready for a shit load of law suits over something that could've been rectified by something called awareness

I'm just glad I'll be 18 in a few months, then this will all mean nothing to me personally.

Yeah though, I basically agree with Ziff, Grey, and Rydian.

Overall this issue just seems to be extremely overexagerated, but a lot of things are at fault here and had it coming.

While time has not lessened the joy I feel over Rockstar getting the ass-reaming they've deserved for years now, I do have to agree with Ziff (And the Penny Arcade post of a week ago) that the ESRB has some explaining to do with their rating system:

Basically, M is "scenes of gratuitous sex and/or violence".
AO is "LONG scenes of gratuitous sex and/or violence".

So by that logic, yes, San Andreas (And many other games) should have been rated AO from the beginning.

There's also PLENTY of E rated games out there with cussing in them.

I guess little kids can hear profanity too?

Ziff: The American government has more important things to worry about, in my opinion, than starting to give ratings to games or even banning games from being sold, which in my opinion would hinder the industry rather than help it.

Yes, they should clarify M and AO (really, the only viable difference I can see is that AO has sex and M doesn't/shouldn't) but that's about it. I really don't have a problem with the ESRB ratings otherwise, they usually do their job.

But they seem to have a good time policing every other aspect of the entertainment industry. They might as well finish the job and show some responsibility on this front.

The ESRB system is an abortion. It has failed in every respect. It doesn't keep the games out of the hands of kids, and it doesn't inform parents properly. Tough shit, reform or be reformed.

From the ESRB themselves
MATURE
Titles rated M (Mature) have content that may be suitable for persons ages 17 and older. Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and/or strong language.

ADULTS ONLY
Titles rated AO (Adults Only) have content that should only be played by persons 18 years and older. Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity.

So, the addition of the three words "prolonged", "graphic", and "nudity" make up the difference between AO and M. Not to mention the fact that they dropped blood and gore and strong language from the description.

The ESRB just seems like it seriously needs a BIG and drastic change.

All you see now, are new "Descriptions" as to why games are rated what they are, seen Conker's Bad Furday? What happened to simplicity?

And now they've got what, tons of ratings?
E 3+, E, E 10+, T, M, AO

Ah, I remember the days when a game was either KA 6+ or M.

You ever check their website, Ziff? Seems to me as though they do offer resources for parents to check ratings and what each of them means.

Don't forget, the last round of congressional hearings ended up setting the stage for the ESRB, which the government felt was necessary for the industry to be on a level playing field rating-wise.

As for keeping games out of the hands of kids, that's a retailer's job. Fine them if they're caught selling games to kids under the rating's age, but don't point the blame anywhere else.

That, and the parents blindness is the biggest issue here in my opinion.
