Holy crap. This could have certain implications for the rest of the ROM hacking community.

(Because of the issue at stake, I feel that this thread is most appropriate here, in the ROM hacking forum.)

God........its lucky I live in the Uk

I'm 16, and I can buy alcohol from off-licences with absolute ease. I really cant see the crackdown on video games happening over here.

Yeah, I've always wondered why they keep freaking out over alcohol and tobacco over here and get into a penalizing mood.

For example, here in the States, if you work as a waitress, then you're going to have underage kids, to get off like a drunk driving charge or something, who will try to get you to sell alcohol to them (using fake IDs, etc.) so they can tell the cops and have you charged. In Tennessee, you could get up to a year imprisonment, $3000 fine, and your license to sell alcohol for up to seven years taken away for that (which effectively means you won't be a waitress for a while). Seriously, over here, you're a bad person who must be punished if you sell alcohol to a minor no matter the circumstances.

I don't see how this issue is of concern to the ROM hacking community. It's not like Nintendo put a sex mini-game into SMB3.

But it is a hack of a PS2 game. A hack. Knowing the many idiots that exist, they will take simple NES rom hacking as bad too. They will say that "If you can do that in GTA then imagine what you can do with something like Super Mario!"

Yes, it is not likely, but still.

Is it just me, or are all the people who are against video game violence democrats? This isn't an insult or anything, I am just asking. Just seems like it...

Yeah, but then some stiff-assed political hack is going to say "OK, so what about other hacks?". You know them, they will.

shes a fuckwit to put it politely....why do politians never quite get that violent, sex filled video games are already monitored by ELSPA and given the appropriate ratings...its the retailers and the parents who are stupid enough to allow these to be sold/bought.

I believe in cracking down on younger people getting there hands on games like GTA it shouldnt be aloud because of the very same reason you cant put a minor under 16 years of age in prison..because they havent yet obtained full moral development. And any one over the age of 16 if they commit a crime due to a Video game then it means something was wrong with their development as a child and they dont understand how the real world works. In that case anything could set them off not just a game but something as simple as news reports about the war in iraq.

I doubt this'll go very fair as most things like this ever do. Plus the modding / hacking community is soo large with so many ways of altering game content that there is no way they could shut it down. just look at Bit Torrent and the Feds attempt to put an end to that.

Nuff said.

True, I bet that even if they try to shut down this board, the people on it would simply log off and reconnect with MSN / AIM or something.

Read the freakin article. No one is talking about hacks. They are talking about an explicit game that has some sort of easter egg or glitch in it. NOT HACKING.

Kario, What do the words MODIFIED VERSION mean to you? To me those are a clear sign of HACKING.

Thats on the computer version. Look at a game like Quake 3. You can modify it to where you play as Homer Simpson in The Mushroom Kingdom if you have the correct files. The people making the game have nothing to do with it. To me, modifying computer files is completely different from hacking a rom.

Of course, I've heard of older hacks like Super KKK Bros. and such? And those weren't causes for alarm. Or were they ? Nobody here does offensive hacks so I don't really see it as an issue for us.

Looks like she's going after companies and stores that sell violent and sexually explicit games to children, not after those who published the instruction to hack GTA. The hack instructions are not illegal by themselves, even if a child get it's hand on those, he must have the game to access the extra sexual content.

That is what she is after, preventing children to access this violent game, even unmodified. If it had been an easter egg instead of a hack, she would have said about the same thing.

I see this having nothing to do with ROM Hacking at all. If it mentioned graphical hacks of SMB that changes sprites into pensises, yes, but PS2 is beyond the scope of what we do and I see her as no threat in what we do. *moves to video games*

This has to do with the purchase of games. Not production therein.

If you want to whine about something whine about 18 USC 2257 which cripples the porn industry.

The first one is regulatory and allows for safer controls over the materials before going to minors (God, I HATE saying things like that). The second one, on the other hand, destroys the amateur porn and self-produced porn industries (which I don't mind but is actually hurting a lot of people )

>.> Ziff, since when do you defend porn?

It's a mod... Those detailed instructions that are running rampant on the internet are just mods. Mods are legally protected by the fact that the internet is without legality... a simple disclaimer is all that's needed to keep people out of the courthouses, and the fact that the sheer anonymity of the net's residents is beyond even the most sophisticated search equipment that the government is enough to keep our beloved internet, as it always is, free.

This is going to be one of hte few times I will ever say the Democratic party is in the wrong, but it is.

Also, I think this would do better in World Affairs, at this point.

And what does the word "RETAILER" mean to you? Does anyone here SELL their hacks?

Yea, didn't think so.

[22:38] AreyKefka: basically, to sum it up
[22:39] AreyKefka: the thing says she is cracking down on people who sell rated M games to people who arent supposed to play them according to the ESRB
[22:39] AreyKefka: am I right, or very right?
[22:39] Lenophis: very right
[22:39] AreyKefka: can I quote this?
[22:39] Lenophis: go ahead
