The (lack) of creativity we see now is more our fault than the industry's.

We have always said 'push graphics, sound and blah, blah, blah'. We look at the aestheticly pleasing aspects of a game. We think 'wow, so and so is the director'. As much as that matters, it is forcing out smaller companies who have fresh ideas from making games, it is too damned expensive. $ > people

I have pretty much ignored the graphics aspect of games. Games probably will reach an point soon in a few when they look like it was real...

But the problem is that to many Devolopers are looking for reality. Alitte unrealism can't hurt.

And there is still orginal games coming out, just not as many as before.

Devolopers shoudl try aspects that seems wierd at first, but works well.

Think on The sims, none thought that it would work expect for Will Wright. For 5-6 years ago...

Now it's one of the most selling PC games, ever.

The devolopers needs to be more daring...

Spend five minutes dusting off a classic game and slap a full price on it, it'll sell like hot cakes.
Make sure the Square-Enix logo shows up somewhere on the boxart, it's a guaranteed million-seller.
Frame that little "M" in the corner. You've got it made.

A great majority of people are desensitized to this. Once people find a fad or a brand to stick with they'll cling to it no matter what. People begin creative, they see that they've stumbled upon something big and attempt to milk every last dollar out of it. Kitten Yiffer's got a good example, though I'm bending it a bit... The Sims was revolutionary, but I doubt anyone with half a mind would have spent the $300+ over the years expanding it.

And you have those without, who are dropping the dollars into this revolutionary game and refusing to give anything else a chance because... oh noes. THEY'RE not revolutionary. I know people who have never played a non-FF RPG. Dear mother of god. People are afraid of new things. GTA3 was revolutionary, even if it was in bringing a new level of adultery to the home console, thus beginning the "kiddy" argument into play against any other conceivable title. Wind Waker was a keeper and a seller, but those sales are still diluted somewhat by those completely disgusted with its graphics. People shrug off any epic revision of Mario that comes to the Cube, and they spend their money on the Advance old ports instead. Kingdom Hearts appears outwardly as a childish game. It was damn great, but honestly, ask yourself, if the game were the exact same quality would it have done as nearly as well as it did without having some Square backing?

People need to play more daringly. I'll hear people saying that such and such is an awesome FPS that sheets your screen in blood whenever you score a headshot, or Final Fantasy CXVIII is coming out next week and I'm getting it because FF is good or something, and while those games might be good, there are underdogs that yet deserve attention, and they must get what they deserve before gaming becomes an elitist society, if it hasn't already.

I bet none of this made any sense whatsoever. It's 2AM here, and I have laundry to do.

No, not at all, anyone who says there is a crisis of creativity is talking bollocks, the Eye Toy, the Bemanoi series and other gameplay revelations like Boktai (on the GBA) have all come out in recent years. Technology is freeing games makers to make things that are truly special.

I wouldn't agree with that completely, but i have noticed a giant drop off in the difficulty and challenges in games, who knows, maybe it's just that i'm too good at games now that they seem easier. I just got Metroid Zero Mission and it barely took me three hours to beat without trying to hard. I think i only died once, but that could be wrong and i got something like 80% completion. I have to say that it was one of the most fun games i've played in a while, but that's probably cause it brings back great memories of days of yore. There are some great games that are comming out that are truely inovative. Let's take Lifeline, that game is one of the most unique games i've heard of in a long time. I know that it's not the best game ever made, and it's not going to sell as well as the mainstream games, but it is truely inovative and i just might buy it for the novelty of the idea.
I think the major problem is that developers are afraid to go into new directions, and that it's going to be very difficult to come up with new, fun ways of making games. Back in the day, platformers were the only type of game around, so when rpgs came out they were unique, tehn came fps which was a totally different direction for games. It'll take a while for people to think up new ways ot take games and the risk is great so most producers won't go there. Hopefully there are some startup companies taht will get taken under the wings of the major production studios so that they can create so truly inovative games.

I wouldn't say that the industry has a "Crisis of Creativity". Consider the following examples:

Manhunt
Lifeline (Ok, so it sucked. At least it's somewhat different.)
Final Fantasy X-2 (Different as far as FF games go, and it worked.)
WWX: Rumble Rose (Doesn't an all female wrestling game count for ANYthing?)
That Arcade game with the Cow Butt ('Nuff Said.)

There is some creativity, but there's also a lot of boring rehashes... and worse, crappy remakes... (Good remakes are, well, good... For isntance, SMAS was a great remake.. which is now being borken up and remade into a crappy remake... WOW TEH 1337 MARIO BROZ GAM TEH ARKADE CLASSIK!1!)

There is no lack of creativity that I see. Yes there are games similar, remixed, redone etc, but it's because people like playing retro. I like playing retro. Think about the emulation community as a whole. Nobody emulates to play the latest, greatest (theyre not supposed to anyway). They emulate the games of the past, the ones they go back to time and time again. Theres the newer games, and theres the retro style games. It's just that simple.

There is innovation and creativity in games, but let's be honest - if you come up with something original these days, it has to put a new spin on gaming - period. See the EyeToy, Bemani dance games, online gaming, etc.

If you don't think your original concoction will amount to anything on the shelves, then it's safer to go with a tried and true formula - but put a new spin on THAT. Take RPG's for example - there's hundreds of them on the market, and at least half of them follow a cookie-cutter formula or borrow innovations off other games. The rest at least try to come up with unique storylines, unique attack systems, replay value, etc... And in a few of those cases, you get a mega-hit.

No no no, I require very little to keep me entertained, and creativity in the form of all female wrestling suits me just fine, as I'm sure it does others. Creativity and substance in all games would mean that every game would be a block buster hit. Thats not going to happen, thankfully. If every game were just bursting with both creativity and substance, and was a must have, how would my poor wallet cope?

I... don't follow. There's been some wrestling games with a lot of substance - the Fire Pro series comes to mind. Unique fighting system, unique edit mode, unique features...

That's not really true. In last month's PC gamer, a game got a 88% or something, and you could run it with a VCR.

After Dikatana, people started to say stuff like this more and more.

A VCR-based game getting 88%?!? WTF was that game's selling point?

I routinely see interviews where the game gets an average rating, with props given to the graphics and points taken away for bugs or gameplay flaws. The days where graphics would count for 40-50% of a review score are long gone.

I was joking (in case you missed that ) But serisously, it could run on a comp from 10 years ago.

It was a RPG that took 100+ hours to beat Geforge or something like that.

Virtual reality is an quite unused concept. It was hot for ten years ago but never striked through...

It would be better now with out powerful graphics card but, almost no intrest. But then people got ill all the time with thoose helmets so...

I would like to see more cross-over concepts. RTS with FPS have been done, but I would like to see it more propoly made...
