How about we make a sticky thread describing which emulators are best for hacking the various systems. Um, I'll start. Best Emulators NES: Nesticle (Supports real time graphics editing, full screen only) Loopy NES Gameboy Advance: NO$GBA (More Powerful Debug Tools) Visual Boy Advance (Less Powerful Debug Tools) Gameboy (Original): NO$GMB (Buggy, but has a familiar interface) BGB (Good emulator with similar debug options to No$GMB) Genesis: DebugGens Dgen Kega Fusion (Awesome but less featured) ----------------------------------------- Other Emultors NES: FCEUXD (Good Emulation with many debugging options and offers a windowed mode) Genesis: Genecyst (a great emulator in its time, and the first with debugging. DOES NOT work with Windows XP) (edited by iamhiro1112 on 03-23-05 06:03 PM) (edited by iamhiro1112 on 03-23-05 06:10 PM) (edited by iamhiro1112 on 03-23-05 07:42 PM) (edited by iamhiro1112 on 03-26-05 03:50 AM) (edited by iamhiro1112 on 03-26-05 03:43 PM) (edited by iamhiro1112 on 03-26-05 03:45 PM) (edited by iamhiro1112 on 03-27-05 10:52 PM) (edited by iamhiro1112 on 03-27-05 11:52 PM) (edited by iamhiro1112 on 03-28-05 06:44 PM) (edited by iamhiro1112 on 03-28-05 06:44 PM) |

only that list is entirely wrong. You dont spell FCEUXD and VBA as "Nesticle" and "NO$GBA"

Anyone who recommends NESticle for anything doesn't know the first thing about NES emulation.

There are more than enough stickies as is, we don't need another one for something as simple as this. Colleen has suggested updating the main FAQ to include forum-specific sections. If that happens, this can go in there. |

For Genesis, I would say that DebuGens version of Gens. If you hate Gens, there's Dgen, but meh. Kega Fusion is awesome, but it doesn't have some of the nifty features.

For Gameboy, NO$GMB if you can live with a *cough*few*cough* bugs. Otherwise... er, nothing I know of.

BGB is a very good GBx emulator with a very good debugger. It's similar to no$gmb, so if you like it's debugger... this one should come second-nature.

Originally posted by DischNESticle, afaik, is the only NES emulator that supports real-time GFX editing. And while it may suck for actual emulation, it's nice from a graphic hacker point of view. (edited by Xkeeper on 03-26-05 01:51 PM) |

Saying FCEUXD is nearly on par to Nesticle is like saying that MSPaint is nearly on par to Photoshop. (edited by Apophis on 03-27-05 10:13 PM) (edited by Apophis on 03-27-05 10:14 PM) (edited by Apophis on 03-27-05 10:14 PM) |

Originally posted by iamhiro1112 You don't have the first clue what you're talking about. NESticle is not slow. It's arguably the fastest working emu available (although the corners it cuts show when you use it) FCEUXD "nearly on par to NESticle"? Are you stoned? The only thing FCEUXD lacks from NESticle is runtime CHR-ROM editing. On the reverse, NESticle lacks any sort of credible emulation (it's hackish and sloppy, and GROSSLY inaccurate). FCEUXD has a full debugger, memory viewer/editor, PPU viewer, runtime hex editor, nametable viewer, code tracer, etc, etc etc. How you figure NESticle has any sort of advantage is beyond me. If you're doing anything beyond simple graphics/text/level editing (ie: when you'd actually have any use for an emu built for rom-hacking)... using NESticle is out of the question due to its emulation problems. Not to mention it won't even run a lot of games. It even has trouble with a lot of mainstream ROMs -- let alone the obscure ones. So to recap NOBODY SHOULD BE RECOMMENDING NESTICLE TO ANYONEIt's a bad emulator. It's not even decent -- it's bad. The only time anyone should be using it is if they're on a POS 133 machine or something and it's the only emu fast enough for them to run -- and even then there might be better options (like LoopyNES) As for FCEUXD (or FCEUd) -- it's one of the very few emulators available with a full debugger (and no... NESticle does not have a debugger). The only emus which might be able to even squeeze into the same category are NESten (buggy), and Nintendulator (slow - more of a tracer than a debugger - hard to use). And if you use either emu for hacking for more than 10 minutes, you'll clearly see why FCEUXD has them trumped in this department. So please stop encouraging NESticle use. It's bad enough people still use it because they're too lazy to switch, we don't need to hook beginners in and tell them to use one of, if not the worst popular NES emu in existance. Personally, I thought he was a lot nicer than I would have been if I'd decided to type up a long response. |

Originally posted by Disch actually, I had an old computer before, 66Mhz, win 95. It wouldn't run NESticle. but it ran LoopyNES fine. so the moral of the story is: NESticle sucks kthxdie. |

Nesticle = bad. Recommending anyone to use Nesticle = worse. Actually using Nesticle = horrible. Still using Nesticle to this day when there are at least 9 other better options = priceless. There are some things money can't buy, for everything else, there's p2p. |

ok, I hate to say it, but iamhiro, you're spreading misinformed opinions and really should not be relied on. So I'm going to consult with other, more knowledgable hackers and come up with a list and possibly an all round ROM-Hacking FAQ so threads like this will stop. I'll let this stay open for now for further discussion on emulators used for hacking, but I'm keeping my eye on you guys (the other eye sorta rolled out of it's socket, when I find it I'll also keep it on you guys). Well, my goal is to evaluate any emulator with debugging options. |
