Basically, I made it so that the game uses the handakuten lines for text.

Ah, that's pretty clever. Does that work out in the long term in terms of ROM space though? I mean, I'd imagine the expansion into the two lines would originally only happen as the text is brought on screen in the original (anything else would be rather wasteful).

Also, I think the text would look better if you made sure the height of all lowercase letters' midsections was the same. The "huh" in the bottom line, where the u appears taller, is a particularly glaring example.

bh, wouldn't that make you feel even the slightest bit uncomfortable?
Suddenly finding myself to be the opposite gender would do already, so I reckon you could call it seeking refuge in audacity.

OGGs around 130kbps is the format the radio streams in, and it saves CPU cycles if I can skip any recompression.

No, I understood that just fine - the question was whether the game's text actually was stored like that (thus not making it necessary to use up more memory on your English text) originally or the expansion was performed on the fly (i.e. the text being stored line-by-line with distinct codepoints for voiced kana and those being transformed into the unvoiced versions plus a dakuten on the tile row above when rendering the text).

Okay, I gave it a shot. Some observations from the beginning:

  • You removed the blue fog effect. Why? This seems more like a deterioration than an improvement.
  • Possible shot frequency went up? I can imagine this making the game quite a bit easier in several locations...
  • The door at the first battle site with Ridley became breakable, and in fact quite easy to break by accident. If you leave through it, the self-destruct sequence doesn't trigger, but reentering through it leaves an empty room with nothing in it. If you walk back all the way, the entrance shaft will start tilting as in the self-destruct scenario and leaving will make things proceed as usual without you ever having fought out the battle. Pretty sure this is a bug.

More:
  • Lots of the changes seem to be more of a "mod" than really an "improvement"; working on their own, but "different" rather than "better".
  • The platforms in the shaft leading up to Brinstar are barely visible. Argh!
  • The area at the bottom does look better, though.
  • It seems like the general theme is to make the game more dark and grim. So far, that seems to be more or less working out nicely.
  • The machinegunned shots do make things a lot easier; in particular, it becomes easier to just indiscriminately spray the wall with bullets until you hit.
  • Most palette edits are good, but I positively liked the falling leaves part of Brinstar more with the "perpetually-withering forest" look it had originally than as the ectoplasma-covered grotto it seems to have been turned into.

Leaving the initial Ridley battle still seems like a bug, consider at the very least the then-unexplained tilting and explosion of the space station.

Marshall islands legalize cocaine, remove visa requirement

I suppose that's also a valid strategy to get some money in, if bound to piss off the moral guardians elsewhere.

It's gotten bad as the wind blows it towards the USA and Western Canadian parts.
For all its "invisible death" connotations, the risks of radiation are massively overestimated. Even if this indeed was to happen, any risks from the cloud by the time it would reach the States would be neglectable simply due to gradual dilution. If anything, the prevailing winds at the moment are a massively fortunate circumstance; if the plant's fallout was blown over Tokyo something like 150km away, it would be a different story. You can't just evacuate the 30millionsomething people in the greater area.

Apart from that, really, it's the same scenario as usual. I mean, I despise antiintellectual attitudes and am a proponent of nuclear power in principle, but if you look at the history of corruption, doctored statistics and faked reports that seems to emerge behind every lesser and larger nuclear power related accident, it almost seems like there is some secret oath people in the industry have to take to act out the role of some kind of cartoon villain or act on the other end of the scale from the green lobby's demands out of sheer childish defiance.

Also, it's Daiichi, as in "#1".

No, what I'm saying is that much like you wouldn't smell a lot if somebody was to open a can of Surströmming in Japan and the wind eventually blew the plume over to the US, the actual partial pressure of the radioactive particles by the time the cloud from the plant reaches you is going to be neglectable and the real risk from a large range of what is already considered "abnormally high" levels of radiation is perhaps a millionth part of the risk of getting into a car accident over the course of the next year, so you really shouldn't be concerned (and even people in Japan shouldn't be in nearly the apocalyptic mood about it media around here seem to imply they should be in).

Also, re: faked reports, I was talking about this.

Nice theme.

Added with thanks, after some fixing (missed font size hints here and there).

It's not like we are fooling anyone regarding the legality of the way the ROM images we hack around on, or anybody here cares about intellectual property rights at all... and as far as being sued for saying that we are pirating goes, I think I speak for all the administration when my response is along the lines of bring it on.

Anyway, pacnsacdave: Do I understand you right in that you have translated the text yourself and need help with actually hacking your translation into the game? If so, some additional data on the project (such as a link to the image, or the screens you want translated) would be helpful.

you should probably translate that, then re-post them.

What's there to translate? And even so, it's not like people on the board only understand English. Posting foreign-language content, especially if accompanied by some explanation, is perfectly fine.

EditorMaster: So yeah, what exactly is changed?

Yes, pretty much exactly what Kiokuffiib11 said. The things you can do in a ROM hack are precisely the things you could do when writing a new game for the system from scratch.

Apart from the recommendation Kiokuffiib11 gave, you are probably best off having a look through the General MM hacking thread and looking for any hints towards what you are trying to achieve.

According to Google, quote-1.5 (€ / l) = 7.98911157 US$ / US gallon-unquote, so I can only snicker about your problems. Gasoline has been inadequately cheap in large parts of the world for a very long time anyway, and perhaps the US is more than overdue for finally erecting a proper system of public transport.

Ah, we had several discussions about that recently. My stance usually was that, given the activity, we should let bans slip if they contribute to a past thread or leave a good premise for its continuation. However, in the particular case cited, I'm not quite sure how this would apply, and if we made declared such bumps to be tolerable as a reason to resurrect an old thread, it doesn't seem too different to me from introducing a regime under which old threads are just randomly brought up to page one every now and then.

Also, there aren't really any bounds like what you are implying - I can just assure you that it is, on the contrary, most worrying if people are wary of the purported or potential strictness of the staff body you are part of independently of any real incidents evidencing such a strictness or claims to the contrary and therefore wind up not sharing their grievances and viewpoints on things such as this

Here's some pretty interesting, if possibly somewhat disturbing, videos I found of the tsunami striking Japan.

Given that most of the cars seem to be swimming on top, I reckon the people caught by the tsunami while in their cars would have had significantly higher chances of survival than others.

As it did recently for me again, it would appear that pulling a single all-nighter is generally a good method to stabilize one's sleep schedule. After an initial phase of difficulty, you will find that it is quite easy to go to delay sleep arbitrarily until the moment of your choice.

There was an interval where AMD was superior both in terms of price and performance (roughly the Athlon XP stage), but Intel got way ahead now... AMD's redeeming points remain, I suppose, price/power ratio and a certain stick-it-to-the-man appeal.
