Welcome back, and sorry that I won't reply with anything quite approaching your post in terms of length.

What you are saying there sounds pretty interesting, although I'm sure there are plenty of people who would love to call you out on associating the term "hack" with "bad/evil things" (something that could be argued to be an act of drinking media kool-aid, seeing how its usage originally was neutral to positive and only sensationalist reports came to associate it with "criminals breaking into online banking"). I shall be looking forward to seeing some concrete information on what you are up to.

Yes, but more by choice than pathology - although after a while, it freezes in place as some kind of biological clock, actually rendering me incapable of sleeping before the point where I only would have 3 hours left.

Pixel art does not necessarily imply retro. See games like Seiken Densetsu 3, SotN or Suikoden II; all of those have cartoonish bitmap/pixel graphics with sharp edges and manually done details but look absolutely gorgeous.

Don't mind him. GM tends to be slightly inclined towards bouts of PMS.

Welcome and enjoy your stay.

Okay, let's make this debate slightly more interesting.

How do you feel about, say, the EU's plans to block access to child pornography?

Well, definitively mathematics the most for me (in terms of where I would go awful lengths of intellectual exercise to conquer material that is taxing for me to understand but still find it gratifying), but really, unless I'm in a wrong kind of mood, I can happily gobble up all kind of information that feels more significant than idle gossip.

Very no. I don't think too highly of organized sports (or any sports at all, on that matter), and haven't even owned a TV set for a very long time, so that's two strong reasons.

I did watch a very small number of football world cup finals back when I still was at school, but it was only out of a diffuse feeling that things of political or memetic significance might happen (which was spot on when the famous Zidane headbutt occurred; I remember my first thought being "this is going to be all over the internet by tomorrow"), not out of interest in sportsmanship.

Well, let's assume there was a way of blocking it in a sufficiently efficient way that 95-99% of the potential "consumers" would wind up deprived of a means of obtaining it.

So would you also be for it if there was a way for China perfectly block everything it blocks at the moment?

If not, why not?

Child Porn is inherently considered wrong

Inherently[citation needed]? It "is considered"[who?]?

It's just bits and bytes. There exist prime numbers that, given the right algorithm, decode to child porn.

Child Porn is used to derive sexual pleasure, whereas knowledge in general in order to better oneself is fine.
I'm sure there are people out there who wank to the newest in blood and gore on daily news. But that's entirely beyond the point; of what concern is it to you what people do with themselves?

It would be like you saying that if there was a way to perfectly make a goal in soccer is good, so then I respond with that if there was a perfect way for a person to commit a murder you would agree. Keeping people ignorant is different from letting adults watch explicit images for their sexual pleasure
No, your simile is off. Murdering a person causes direct, measurable harm to them against their will; such is not the case as far as decoding sequences of bits as images and responding to the result in whatever way is concerned.

You might argue that considering child pornography "inherently wrong" is supported by there being a wide consensus in society that it is (which would only not be shared by a couple of "defective" extremists and the child pornography consumers themselves), but in that case, it might be worth pointing out that harmony/stability/well-defined authority is a quite firmly rooted value in Chinese culture (for a somewhat accessible, pop-cultural take on it, watch Hero) and indeed, one could argue that a similarly wide consensus broken only by those whose actions are banned themselves and a few stray sympathisers exists in China that any attempts to stir up secession, civil unrest or disunity are inherently wrong. This is not just a matter of different cultural spheres, either; a century or two ago, your own countrymen would have unabashedly told you with the same feeling of righteousness that mixed marriage or universal suffrage is inherently wrong.

Either way, it seems like my assumption that I could trip this otherwise very one-sided debate up with throwing that in was more or less correct.

Well, in Europe, what you call "military time" is pretty much the default, and 12-hour time is only used conversationally (and not even consistently so).

How exactly does the music thing work? Is it a glitched version of one of the ingame songs or did you actually figure out the music format used? (I reckon it would be another variation on Squaresoft's general format scheme...)

After some brief discussion on IRC, it was determined that the radio (previous thread) has been running the same songs for more than long enough. Therefore, a reset is in place. Of course, we couldn't possibly just wipe everything, including everyone's favourite songs (as if).

Therefore, we decided to go about it as follows: out of the present pool of songs, a total of 20 songs shall be salvaged, with the rest being barred from reinclusion for at least a year to come. For the purpose of choosing those 20 songs, everyone shall be given 20 votes, out of which up to 3 may be spent on a given song (i.e. you could vote for 20 different songs, or give 17 songs one vote and 1 song 3 votes, or...). The voting shall take place in this thread. In the end, the 20 songs with the most votes will be retained.

Please format your posts as follows:

<id> <any string representing the title, comments etc.>

Example:

26 that cheesy anime song thing
68 .hack - Drain Heart

Of course, you are free to spend less than 20 votes.

edit: Please note that I do intend to automate the counting process and therefore, malformed votes (such as roundabout descriptions of what you mean) will not be counted. I don't intend to make the counting system Turing-complete (halting problem and all, we only have one server core).

Yes, I agree that I shouldn't care about what the EU does. But I disagree about China, if the people knew the situation that they were in and not brainwashed, then they would change for the better. It is not inherently wrong for them to change. It might be rooted in their culture, but progression should be what is strived for. Getting more knowledge drives progression, but viewing child porn does not drive progression.

Oh, but on the scientific progress front, China seems to be doing perfectly fine. Fine enough that I would expect them to overtake the USA, Europe and whatever else you consider the "western world" within the next 50 years or so.

Furthermore, it would be good if you could respond to more than a tiny fraction of my point, or elaborate on what exactly your notion of inherent wrongness derives from and what makes that notion more inherently right than the Chinese notion.

Ah, good point. I was hoping for something like "until we get enough votes", to encourage people to vote earlier rather than later, but I suppose I could fix it to 00:00, 5th March.

Sorry, but editing your own post to be empty is about the worst thing you can do in such a situation. It's better to just wait until a moderator stumbles into it and moves it into the right place.

That being said, restoring the post and moving it to ROM hacking.

Try opening http://www.kafuka.org:8000/stream.ogg.m3u. Chances are you have some program that is capable of playing it associated with it. (Any decent media player should be capable of it.)

If not, try adding the same URL (perhaps without the .m3u) in your decent player of choice directly.

(I'm emphasizing decent to imply that something like iTunes might not work.)

Since I'm fundamentally laptop-bound, I stopped caring about MP3 players many years ago, but the most up-to-date information I have is that the latest (as of 2 years ago or so) line of Samsung players has one of the best sound processors available.

Don't get iPods, even if your real-life surroundings might suggest that you do so. They are mostly used either by hipsters who care about form and fitting in over function or by staunch Apple cultists who would provide good word-of-mouth even to canine droppings with a lowercase i prefixed. Audio quality is bad, prices are higher than what you would expect for another device of similar quality and if you ever run into problems with it or want to use something less limited than Apple's toolchain, you will find that their policy violates you with a spiked bat.
