Meh... Playing Guitar Hero is nothing like playing a real guitar. It's just a bunch of button presses. Playing a real guitar is far more fun, and playing songs in an actual rock band with an electric guitar is even better.

My brother-in-law hates the Ps2....yet he buys one just to play the orginal Guitar Hero. After I heard about that, I had to try it for myself...and of course I love it. I have the 2nd one as well and now I can't wait to play it on th XB360. Too bad you can't go head to hear against someone via XBox Live.

Leaderboard fight!

So for those of us that like to have quick, pick up and go fun without hours of practise?

Did anybody say it was like playing a real guitar?

This is one of my pet peeves actually, people who have a go at Guitar Hero because it's nothing like playing a real guitar. DUH. It's a game.

Dance Dance Revolution is not like real dancing. Sim City is not like being a real city planner. Battlefield Vietnam is not like having been a real soldier in the Vietnam War. I don't think anybody thinks that Guitar Hero is like playing a real guitar. We all know it's five buttons and a "strum bar".

I just see it as a game -- and a very fun one at that -- not an attempt to actually play guitar. If anything it's glorified air guitar with on-screen prompts. But it's fun (like air guitar). And like air guitar, you don't need to play a real guitar to do it (although playing a musical instrument *may* help you with the rhythm aspect of things).

It's also worth noting that a few articles I've read seem to indicate that the game is getting people to pick up their real guitars and mess with those too again, or inspire people to take up the guitar. So that's fairly nifty.

AMEN to that. It infuriates me as a GH player, and as a gamer that so many people dismiss GH so callously because, "That's not how you play a real guitar."

No one plays GH to learn to play guitar. No one plays GH because they think it feels like a real guitar. No one who plays GH has any aspirations of becoming a real-world guitar master.

They play it because its different, high-quality, rewarding and fun, and aren't afraid to show it.

Learning/Playing a real guitar can be just as entertaining and fun, but these two things are completely different beasts.

For me, I like Guitar Hero better than playing a real guitar. It's less painful.

What's awkward is when the song you're playing on Guitar Hero is one you already know how to play on guitar. I'd say it's more of a help than a hindrance, though. The first time I ever played GH, I got something like 85% on 'Woman' on Hard difficulty. I did get messed up by some parts where the buttons were kind of contrary to the actual guitar part, but I doubt I'd have done that well if I didn't already know the song.

Either way, I found the game pretty fun. I'll probably pick it up if I ever get a PS2 or 360.

... No one's mentioned the easier hammer-ons (which my sister has mistakenly called "hard-ons") and pull-offs?

I'm not that great at it (the last time I played, I could only do Medium. I couldn't even finish off the intro of Trogdor), but it's still fun. It gets a bit weird when my sister plays, though... Like when she plays Woman, she tries to sing along for a short bit.

"She's a woman if you know what I mean! 'Cause I'm a woman, too! Woman woman woman woman!"

During the time when she repeats "woman", she swings the guitar back and forth.

Yeah, there's actual hacks all over for the real game too also.

This is probably the coolest custom track I've seen so far, FFVI Boss Theme:

... Funny thing, actually -- I tried air-guitaring that song... Haha, that guy missed the last note. It's always funny to hear the crowd get disappointed at the very end.

as much as I agree with you (playing guitar for real is awesome), I have to say that this game is all about the fantasy.

hell, on guitar hero, you can "play" songs that easily outclass your skill. This game allows non-players to live that fantasy if only for a second.

I play a real guitar (and am downloading Frets on fire to try it out), and I'm saving every penny to get a new guitar right now (check my thread in modern art...)

anyway, if guitar is your fantasy, I really recommend actually trying to learn.
