What happened, guys? WHERE DID THE LOVE GO? I demand an elaborate and detailed report on my desk by tomorrow morning.

Yes, my actual bedroom desk.

I'm gonna go with the "Informative" response, rather than the "Troll" one. I saw this thread: :3

The troll response would've been a better thought out version of this:

Why are you still here?

No, I felt like being lazy.

A detailed report on that one question would probably take a few weeks.

EDIT: That thread alone brought you back? Ha, I brought someone back from aparrent nowhere. =D *starts bragging*

Since there has been nothing but a bland stream of mindless, cynical posts for over a year I decided to unhitch myself from the Boredom Express and became an established lurker.

Post this, police that... as if any of it would amount to anything. This place is a dead horse and a small portion of this "board" seems content with useless topics.

To survive on the internet, a website has to be funny, interesting, or porn.

The internet's form of humor has gotten cynical and somewhat mean. Most of the people who post here can't provide any other form of humor, even if they'll try via randomness (which isn't actually funny). Certain posters, when they post something funny yet vaguely inflammatory, are given a stern warning or a quick ban. Other users are given a bunch of upset people who don't get it, and no administrative response. Others are just ignored. Some actually get a good response.

So everybody is afraid of being funny because most of them can't do it without pressing the button that activates the ban-me roulette.

For a forum to be interesting, it has to work through a process of conversation. When somebody posts a thread, it has to be viewed by a number of other users. One of these users has to actually be interested enough to post a response. Then the topic with that response has to find somebody interested enough to respond to it, and so on. The likelihood of a given post within a topic to be found interesting declines over time. The number of people who are potentially interested in the topic has to be over a certain threshold to beat that decay.

We've had a number of bouts of drama, multiple crashes and location changes, and a pair of board splits. We've been hemorrhaging users for quite some time. We simply do not have enough people to actually maintain a posting experience based on interest.

And we don't do porn.

Unless we fix one of these things, this board is boned.

I think your reply sums up the situation fairly well.

While I don't agree that bans are actually a serious threat to anybody genuinely trying to be funny (and retarded all-lowercase off-topic one-liners don't count as genuinely trying), I don't see much potential to try much of an advance on the "funny" track at the present activity. As for providing interesting discussions, and, by proxy, content, I think this can be done, but it needs a simultaneous effort from everybody. Discussion lives off feedback, and another person trying to contribute content only to run into a wall of one-liners and tl;drs every month doesn't exactly provide such.

I see potential in the Debate and ROM Hacking forums, for the moment, as well as, to a lesser degree, H/S and Programming. As for Spatula... well... let's not talk about that

It doesn't matter if bans are a serious threat; it just takes one "where did that come from?" ban to make a user step lightly. But that doesn't really matter right now.

I think a better issue to address right now would be that we have too many forums here. Splitting a board into multiple forums is a good idea when you have a lot of users, since users are interested in different things, and they can go find things they're interested in and more likely to post in. But most users don't check every forum, so it lowers the traffic of each board (which lowers chance of reply). There's a magic balance of number of users to number of forums, and I can't claim to know what it is. However, I think we're pretty far off the "too many forums" end right now.

If we had a "save the board day" where we all posted not only lots, but also like intelligent human beings, then we could follow it up with trying to recruit new blood and maybe get some old users back.

Quite true. I still have no idea why we have 3 near-identical forums under the creativity section when they could all just be consolidated into one. Officer's Club could be merged with General Chat, seeing as how they're practically identical and that nobody posts in the former. Hard-/Software and Computing could be merged as well as the Adult discussion forum and the Landfill, but after that we would risk making the board an unorganized jumble of topics (granted, it probably is already).

We are talking about merging Story forum with Writing.

I personally think the amount of forums isn't a problem, but those two forums are amongst the most inactive. And most threads who are in there are of... questionable quality.

I think it would be efficient to drop the N-Bombs on Officer's Club altogether. Even back when it was active, it wasn't used for much more than trolling.
