I got it, I played it. Here's my usual good/bad/ugly review/rant.
THE GOOD:
THE BAD:
Minor problems:
THE UGLY:
Other:
Unfortunately I have yet to play online, and probably won't for months, because wireless routers cost money. (I'm not buying that Nintendo adaptor, because I need a wireless router anyway. ) Conclusion: If you like Mario Kart, get this, but be prepared to be frustrated with the physics, especially at first. Practice in VS mode - Moo Moo Farm is great for trying out slides. [edit] Removed a few things, and made a separate list for minor problems. (edited by HyperHacker on 12-25-05 06:57 PM) |

Tanaka is one of the various "Ta-naka-mura" names. Take two out of these in any order and you get a valid, if not unoriginal Japanese name, Tanaka being the most common, seen for example in "You Only Live Twice".

Frankly, I disagree with your critique of the physics. They feel great to me. It depends a lot on which character you're playing - I play Yoshi, and I have tons of control before, during, and after slide boosts. (Also, the sparks don't disappear "randomly" ... there's two levels, the blue and the red. Blue sparks just flash and then disappear, then the red ones stay on.) Admittedly, the penalties for driving off the road are fairly harsh, but that's more of a design decision than a bug. It's fine, learn 2 play. ;o
Easy to keep in first? Have you played 150CC? Do I just suck? Spiny shells exploded in DD too. Just the way it works. This could be good or bad, but since you can learn to avoid it and the computer can't, it's better for you. No, you can't avoid spiny shells. Yes, you can avoid red shells - by holding things behind you. ;o WORKING AS INTENDED Lakitu is indeed slow. There's some cheap stuff, like if you get hit on the top of the corkscrew on rainbow road, you just fall off and get put back at the beginning of it. Just something you have to hope doesn't happen ;o I can hold items behind me in multiplayer just fine... but not online. This is odd, since you say you haven't tried playing online. Maybe you can't hold items behind you if there's more than two players? I've had varying levels of success with the microphone. If it's being finnicky I just switch to select. I've heard you don't unlock anything just by completing mission mode, but you probably have to complete it along with other things to unlock everything. Probably also you have to get high ranks. |

TIME FOR THE COUNTERPOINTS FROM THE ME

Uh... Where did I say it was even moderately easy to stay in first? It's easy to get really far ahead, but then you get attacked a bunch and knocked back to 2nd within a few seconds.
I don't think they exploded that big, though. The only real way to dodge it is to slam on the brakes, which isn't much better.
Hasn't worked for me so far.
I haven't actually tried either... I knew you couldn't do it online, so I figured not in multi either. (edited by HyperHacker on 12-25-05 06:17 PM) |

Mmmk, now respond to mine.
And your inability to dodge red shells seems to come from the fact that they tend to hit you from the side in this. Solution? Watch the bottom screen for which they're approaching in, and hop and turn away from that direction when holding your item or dropping it. Whoom. Blocked red shell. |

I wouldn't have bothered responding, but since you insist... that method requires watching 2 screens at once, and in swerving to avoid the shell while watching the bottom screen you're likely to smack into something. I can't drive at all looking at just the map.

You don't have to look at it exclusively, just glance at it as the shell approaches... And that says nothing regarding my previous post.

You... (Yoshi is a he)
These dont even make sense half the time. Physics: You hit a wall. WHAT DO YOU THINK YOURE GOING TO DO, KEEP GOING? And since when do karts not lose speed offroad? AI: Seems fine to me. I never get hit with that many items, and if I do, Im far enough ahead. Quick run: What? Manual: The manual doesnt teach you everything. It doesnt have to. It just needs to get you in the right direction. Mushrooms: Based off item stat Spiny shells explode SMALL compared to double dash. And you can dodge them, it just actually takes REAL SKILL to dodge. Shells: Its called trailing. And yes, the red shells to swerve a little to make sure they hit you, but you can get rid of them. Lakitu is fine... youre just impatient Falling off ALWAYS had you lose your item. What world have you been living in? Multi: *Read Kyouji's counterstatement* Team battle is lame. Dont play it. The trick is to blow softly... not have Category 5 hurricane winds going into the mic. Speedometer and horn, cant complain... speedometer is nice though Music: Get good headphones The last three: Trivial. So... yeah... Sorry if these are short, but I have a party to run too... |

Ah, didn't see that one.
Originally posted by Alastor the Stylish Yeah, well I dunno about you but both my eyes move in sync with eachother. It's difficult to constantly pay attention to the map and everyone's little item icons when you're driving.
Again, you have to watch the map.
Me not falling in them doesn't mean there isn't too many.
Not falling off cliffs does little to help when someone's attacking you.
Because battle is awesome. Team battle does suck but I had to try it at least once.
What's driving without being able to honk your horn? And speedometers are a nice touch that every other MK game except SMK had.
Doesn't stop it being hit by accident.
It makes no sense. If the music isn't actually playing, it should stop. And then these... Originally posted by Jingle ATW And lays eggs? Some of them must be female.
If you happen to brush lightly against a wall, you shouldn't stop dead. Like in every other racing game ever and real life.
Lose speed, yes. Drop to 10 km/h instantly, no.
Maybe I'm just too fast? They're always way behind until I get pelted with 2 or 3 shells in a row.
IN MKDD, you could do a race like GP, but only one track. Though I guess you can just do a VS match with 7 CPU players. *edits post*
It should teach you the basics, though. When you have to guess at what things mean in the menus after reading the manual, there's a problem.
They seem about the same size to me, but since the karts are smaller, it's worse. Tell me, how do you dodge something that dive-bombs into your head at the speed of sound?
If you happen to see them on the map ahead of time.
It's a race, there's no time for patience. Actually, his speed seems to vary a bit.
Only in DD, and it sucked there too.
Agreed. Had to try it, though.
I tried everything from whispering to practically blowing the DS away. Even whistling.
Headphones suck though. |

What the hell, HyperHacker. How is periodically glancing at the map and who has what items any more difficult than periodically glancing at the rear-view mirror and speedometer in an actual car? You're not going to be staring at them the entire time, and you don't have to (nor should you); just as long as you make a few quick glances every few seconds you'll be fine. Well, your gripe about the Spiked Shell is stupid. To effectively play out those first-place homing devices, just keep an eye on the bottom screen from time to time if you are really close to the person behind you. If you see a Spiked Shell, pull off the accelerator, and wait for it to fire. Then just stay away.
However, if the shell is heading towards you and the second place contender is near you, STAY NEAR HIM! Then he will get the full blast just like you did. Duh! And if you think someone controls poorly, that is because you can't use him. I may not be able to use Rob, Toad, or Peach, but that doesn't mean that they suck. I can only control Dry Bones, Bowser in the Dry Bomber, Mario, and Luigi. Other than that, I am not that good with the other characters. I don't lose all the time, but I just can't win real well. I tend to stick with Dry Bones, though... Well... if you think there are too many bottomless pits, then practice being good. It isn't that hard to navigate the tracks, the hardest being the twists and turns of Rainbow Road, which aren't even that bad. For your battle woes, I don't see how it messes up team battle for you, since I can get rid of all the other team and it would say I won. Besides, you aren't supposed to blow hard into the mic. Just blow lightly into the mic and it would work. Blowing too hard will NOT fill the balloons faster, despite what real life would have you believe. Eh, just my gripes... |
