I'd think if you took out the contrasting pointiness from the insides of the coral, it would look better. The cloud in the coral background doesn't tile quite right; I'd recommend either making the lower clouds less rough or making the upper clouds more rough. The palette choices and general SMW resemblance in the mountain area simply don't work at all.

The blue is a bit bright, otherwise wow.

Some fixes:

I scrapped the rough-looking coral and went with some more donuty-looking stuff. I toned down the blue pieces slightly. The sea background is really meant to be dark blue-green tones and I think the clouds look better in their original colors. I palette swapped it for a sunset look because I hadn't drawn a more appropriate background for the castle. I'll probably end up making something new anyway, but I tried tweaking the palette on the lower cloud pieces anyway.

For the mountain area, it's really just laziness on my part that I haven't made an actual cliff foreground set. Too many graphics to do, too little time.

I still think Mario's got so much eyebrow he looks permanently angry, which is especially unfitting considering how relaxed everything looks.

The thing is, the eyebrows are just two horizontal black pixels. I'm trying to cram so much detail into such a small space that just one misplaced pixel can make the whole head look deformed. I really don't know how I'd separate his eyes from his hat without the eyebrows. I could give him SMB2 buggy eyes or SMB3 dot eyes, I guess:

But yeah, I don't really like either of those. I dunno, I'm not entirely satisfied with the three walking frames, but as a whole, I think I've done better with this Mario sprite than with my Redrawn sprite.

The reason I don't make as many posts with a lot of depth in this topic as I should is because you should know how completely awesome your work is by now; everybody's saying it. And a post only containing bad things would be misleading. I'm tired of coming up with synonyms for 'really good' anyway.

I know that graphically, I'm in the top tier of SMW hacks. That's a fairly small pool, though. Honestly, as artists go, I think of myself as being competent, but nothing special. If I posted some of these shots on a pixel art forum, they'd get torn to shreds. Original graphics are kind of a novelty around here, though, so I get a lot more praise than I probably deserve. Really, I don't know what to do with praise other than just say "thanks." Criticism gives me something to respond to, even when I don't actually agree that anything needs changing.

I like both of those Marios better than the current one, actually. Don't know anything else I can say here...

The blue is still pretty contrasting and the coral is still cluttered. For the pink coral, you barely need a pattern at all on the inside. I'd go with a couple seashell-like ridges and leave it--that donut pattern isn't working out, man.

It's the coral colors that are the problem, really. The pinkish palette almost fully ranges from black to white. The inside of a block expecially should never have such contrasting colors; that should be reserved for the edges.

That door is pretty sweet, BTW.

Sunglasses are a wise choice since Mario would be wearing them with his hawaiian shirt in Super Mario Sunshine.

Also, you would'nt have to worry about the eyebrows anymore. lol

But I was thinking. Why not change Porcu-Puffer into either Boss Bass or Cheep Chomp with ExAnimation for his chewing animations.

Everything looks fantastic graphically. I just have one problem, and it's more an aesthetic thing, anyway.

Your enemies, in many aspects, don't really fit the theme of the area. When I think of a sea castle made of coral, I don't exactly think of moles. Maybe change them to something a little more aquatic, just for the level? Maybe crabs instead of moles, or something of the same.

It's not something that necessarily needs to be changed, but it's just a thought. Also in the same vein with the moles, is there any way to change the dirt they dig up to a more proper color? I mean, I'd think they'd be digging purple or blue "dirt."

Of course, this is just me being picky and a bit OCD. Such changes are (obviously, since it's your hack) entirely up to you.

Mr. Saturn has got a point. Im not too sure if we want Monty Moles in a coral castle. It dosent seem to sync up. Maybe adding some of Mikeyk's custom sprites instead? Maybe the Spiky Ball can work well with the level. Or maybe Electricity.

Personally I think the watery moles are a nice unique approach to the usually grasslands-based enemy. They don't seem to clash too much.

You're not alone -- I had always liked the coral as well. Never bugged me. I think I prefer the "donut" version.

And I think sunglasses could work on Mario, but it might be tricky. He's gonna need some emotion...

Well done Icegoom. I've gotta say, this is the best looking hack I've ever seen. Even over Panic in the Mushroom Kingdom, Stranded, and SM Odyssey! As far as the coral castle goes...fantastic job. I still think the blue stuff should be toned down a bit to make it look less foregroundy, and the clouds/hills need an overhaul. The palettes also clash a little. And the donuty coral looks better IMO. Your level design is also great. Can't wait for the demo!

Your sprites look awesome. I prefer SMB3-style dot-eye mario, but as you said you'll probably find something better.

A few questions about the hack (it just reeks l33tness and we're all dying to know more!) Do you have any idea when the demo will be released and how long the final game will be? Will there be a secret world?

Phazorite has a point. The Background clashes badly (we know you were thinking of changing it) so I came up with an idea for background. How about a temple-like background with a crimson scale palette and keep the coral donut ground.

Temple palette with crimson--sounds like a "volcanic shrine" more than coral to me. I think color schemes should complement the feel of the level...like no bright colors in a cave and avoid bright reds and oranges in water levels.

I really like the sunset effect though...just need to clean up that backdrop. A lot of the graphics are a bit too detailed, if that's possible.

Icegoom, are you thinking about making a volcanic world/level? The whole tropical/prehistoric theme wouldn't be complete without a volcano area. Hell, no platformer would!

I considered sunglasses when I first started the sprite. Here's my best attempt to make them work:

It's pretty hard to fit the earpieces in and make them look like more than a black blob over his eyes. I'm not sure I like the overall dehumanizing effect they have. He's kind of like a terminator now.

Ha ha! I'm so confused. One last attempt at simplifying this some more:

I turned down the contrast a bit more in that palette, which would improve the look of the previous two sets, too, I think. I haven't had a chance to put it into the level yet.

OK, here's my theory on castles: A castle should be like a cumulative test of everything you've learned in the previous world. World 1 has a level that feature Moles and a level that features Porcupuffer, so there are segments of the castle where you have to face them again in a slightly more difficult context. I'm trying to move away from this idea that there's a set of "castle" or "grassland" enemies and just throwing enemies together in novel ways to try to give each individual level its own identity.

Regarding the mole's dirt color, yeah, it really ought to be blue. Moles use Mario's palette, so if I colored the dirt with the same color as his pants, the dirt would change color if he was Fiery. The solution to this would be to switch Moles over the the yellow palette. I tried this a while back and didn't like the way yellow moles looked quite as much as tan moles, but I could give it another shot.

Trust me, I'm using plenty of custom sprites elsewhere. Spikey Balls and Electricity aren't the same kind of challenge as a land-based enemy that chases you wherever you go. (Hmm... mixing Moles with Rip Van Fish at some point might be fun...)

I plan to have a glacier world and a volcanic world.

As slow as I work, I'm thinking of limiting the game to five normal worlds instead of the standard seven or eight. I already have a Star World pretty much done and I haven't decided if I'm going to do a Special World.

I kind of like the open architecture thing I have going, but I'm certainly open to trying a temple. (Maybe I'll test it out with a ripped one of some sort before I go to the trouble of making a new one) I've got some other nighttime levels, but that's something I could try, too.

All right, let's see if I can stop blasting puke for long enough to work on some backgrounds...

Sorry you feel sick, icegoom. I've been on a run of no sickness for a long while now, which is weird, considering I haven't taken any immunity shots in years... I hate needles. Anyways... Sorry I haven't gotten back to you on the level you wanted me to make. My mind is so full of other ideas right now, I can't ignore them. Gah.

It still makes him look robotic and emotionless. Sunglasses probably are not going to work.

(And why can't the demo just be one world like most first demos so we can play it faster? )

Perhapse it is not quite the sunglasses but that Mario's arms are flat on his sides? Usually in SMB games, his arms are up around his chest or belly.
