AFAIK, the first version will only let you change objects into other objects and move them. You can't add or remove objects or edit the terrain.

If you had read this thread halfway down the first page you'd have all the information you need to edit the terrain manually. There's no editor yet and no information on changing course paths, 2D sprites, or textures.

Next time, READ!

Eh, sometimes caffiene gives me an energy boost, other times it just gives me gas. I try to avoid drinking more than half a liter per day, except when we order a pizza and a ton of Pepsi, then it's kinda difficult not to drink a lot. (Juice + pizza = eww no.)

Speaking of energy drinks, I bought a HUGE bottle of some drink this morning, since I had to do PHP coding on 4 hours of sleep. Cost me 3 dollars. I took one drink and a fucking bug flew in it and ruined the entire bottle.

Check for video driver updates. I had some major graphic glitches that turned out to be a buggy driver. Also, see if the distortion shows up in a screenshot.

Sonic has the right idea - if you want it done so badly, grab a hex editor and see what you can do. Editing 3D games is difficult. I wouldn't say it's not worth trying though.

You can't return with RTS or RTL from a JMP. You need to use JSR or JSL respectively. To put it simply:
JMP x: Go to x.
JSR x/JSL x: Push the address of the next instruction (2 bytes for JSR, 3 for JSL) to the stack and go to x.
RTS/RTL: Pop an address from the stack (2 bytes for RTS, 3 for RTL) and go to it.

If you use JMP, you haven't pushed any address to the stack, so it just returns to some random place.

You should probably be inserting. As for editors, try Hexecute, but be wary of the memory leak if you leave it open for a long time.

Posted on 06-29-06 09:52 PM, in ASM: Why does everybody understand it but you? Link
I think the point he's trying to make is that people refer to things as being ASM when they're actually not; that is, data is mis-labelled as code. It's a common newbie mistake (even I did it once ) to generalize any data you don't understand as being ASM code. Yes, this is wrong, but what does it matter? Anyone who actually knows ASM and goes to look at this so-called code will find out fairly quickly that it's not code at all. It's hardly any different than people calling hex "hexidecimal" or saying 9S instead of 95; it should be clear enough what they meant.

This isn't exactly true. In ROM hacking you're generally editing the raw machine code in hex, or a disassembly of this code. It is the same instructions as originally used (assuming the game was coded purely in assembly), but not in the same format. The original program code would generally have comments, labels and in some cases macros to make the job easier. Labels provide that signifigant difference between having to hook into the code, jump to some empty space, move things around etc and just being able to add a few instructions right into the program as-is, since without them, you'd need to manually update all the addresses afterward.

You can tell how good the entire hack will be based on one screenshot? Wow!

Anyway, my comments on the images.
1) Background is nice, foreground not so great. Doesn't really look like a ship, and plain blue water against a nice detailed background is akward; maybe if you used a dithering/fake translucency effect by drawing a checkerboard pattern of colour 0 across the water, so you could see the background through it, it might look better. (AFAIK, the layer 3 water does this.) If you can spare the processing power you could even use layer 3 water. Text is good but sounds a bit funny; could stand being re-worded (but at least the spelling and grammar are good ). "SAVIO" on the score bar looks a bit odd. Savio himself looks pretty good (bit of a beer gut though ).

2) Pretty mediocre overworld. Very square, the piece at the bottom with the path on it looks odd, you might have to build some new tiles for that. Mario should probably be centered on the ship, and it might be a bit neater if the paths were completely hidden until you got to them. The topmost hills need to be changed or removed; their green background against the water is just no good. The palm trees are nice; if you have another shade of brown, you could make the trunks more detailed, but it's not really a problem. The edges of the islands would probably look better if there wasn't dirt showing in the gaps in the grass; I think you just change palettes for that.

It's nothing fantastic, but it's certainly not terrible, which in this forum is pretty damn good. Keep at it!

Posted on 06-30-06 12:43 AM, in networking windows machines sucks Link
It's not Windows' or Linux's fault; it's the PC architecture with its loose and/or nonexistent standards. Mac has the right idea - have one company build the OS and all the hardware, but let people use third-party devices if they're willing to deal with them. (Though I have to admit I never heard of Linux dropping devices at random. )

Anyway if you're both unable to connect through the modem and can't get into the router config, then it seems like a problem with the laptop's NIC and/or drivers, or possibly the cable being used. Since both wired and wireless connections are failing it seems most likely to be a software/driver problem, or they broke some hardware component used by both network devices.

I notice there's no single block highlighted in your diagram, only pairs and more. This suggests that each 4 bits specifies a block or several blocks: 8=hidden ladder, 5=blank, F=three blanks, etc.

I wanted to name the editor Toad's Tool 64 more than ToadsTool 64, but people seemed to like ToadsTool better. Maybe I'll call it Toad's Tool 64 anyway, nothing is set in stone for now.

I don't think anyone will care which name you use, the crane looks alright, and the effect you used on the font looks great.

I always thought it'd be nice to see a Pokémon R/B hack that adds in all the G/S features and some from Ru/Sa (automatically change PC box, actual information about attacks, equip items to Select, etc), or maybe just a G/S hack that correctly re-creates R/B (not just "change the starting map to Palette Town" or "rebuild a few of R/B's maps, don't edit the script, and give up"). I might do the latter someday, but probably not.
