I have problems with XP SP2 and 16-bit apps. I learned that I need to move Autoexec.NT to C:\windows\system32.

The problem: I can't find it.

I can't search for it either. The search feature crashes whenever I try using it. (This isn't SP2 caused, it's happened for a year now.)

Is there a place where it's located on the HD?
If you know of any other third-party search utilites, that might help, too.

I can't use search in Windows XP. Explorer just freezes up when I click Search in the Search window. This has been an issue since we got the computer 1 1/2 years ago. Any ideas on how to fix it?

I'm BACK! With MORE PROBLEMS!

A few months ago I posted that my old computer was making funny humming noises when it booted up, and you guys said it was the power source about to die.

Are power sources replacable, and how much do they cost?

Just leave it alone. It's not doing anything to mess with the machine.

I think this feature's been around forever. Our 'Administrator' name on our XP computer has an Administator folder and an Administrator.FAMILYROOM folder. It works fine. It's also been there since we got the computer last year.

I tried Longhorn once. It had a lot of nice stuff, so I don't think it will flop in the market for that. It COULD, though, for the system requirements. My computer would take it, but my grandma's that's running XP probably wouldn't.

I read that Longhorn's gone into Beta, and that Beta 1 will be released Feb. 16, 2005. Sure, I believe it's in Beta, but Feb. 16? Nah... maybe Feb 16, 2006.

Posted on 12-24-04 04:48 AM, in Linux Troubles (more like annoyances) Link
I'm running TopoLogiLinux 4.0 (based on Slackware 9) and I need some help.

This is a new install, and I'm inexperienced with Linux, so when I go to install a .rpm file, it asks for dependencies. I know what they are, but the question is, HOW do I get these? I can't seem to find them on Google.

I know for something I need glibc but I don't know how to compile it. Anyone have it precompiled or something?

Here's my complete list of need stuff:

/bin/sh (oddly, this exists, but it doesn't seem to find it)
ld-linux.so.2
libICE.so.6
libSM.so.6
libX11.so.6
libXext.so.6
libc.so.6
libdl.so.2
libm.so.6

Just so you know, I'm running KDE 3.1.

Any help would be appreciated!

I see your pain. I uninstalled IE on my Win98 machine and now lots of things have gone out of whack. I try installing IE 6 (Which I never had) and it claims that I am trying to install IE 4 on a computer with IE 5. Odd.

I have too many questions.

Windows Questions

1. I tried dual-booting Windows 98 and Windows 3.11 using a tool called OSR2FIX (So I can run some really old programs). It worked. But now I have a small problem: I need drivers. Are there any drivers for Windows 3.11 for Workgroups that are possibly compatible with the Radeon 7500? Would some older ATI drivers work? I'm awfully tired of 16 color VGA.

Linux Questions (On Red Hat 9)

1. I installed two packages, and then found out that they are not supposed to be both installed at the same time. How do I remove a package? The only things I can remove are components from the Red Hat CD's.

2. For another package I'm trying to install, it bugs me saying it requires the SDL_TTF library. I went and downloaded it, then ran the RPM. It apparently installed, but the system doesn't say it's installed! What's going on?

3. Where can I download OpenGL for Linux? I can't find it, and the Google link on the OpenGL site is broken.

It's odd that, regarding Linux #3, OpenGL is probably there.

I'm trying to compile PLib for the game Super Tux Kart. PLib's configure doesn't think I have it.

Otherwise, thanks. I haven't tried with Win. 3.1 yet.

My first OS and GUI was Mac OS 7.1PR2 or something like that (at least that's what the boot disk is: is it a prerelease? Might have been just 7.1) on my Performa 600. I remember those days, they were great. Then Windows 3.11 came out, and I became a primary DOS and Windows user. Just having popped back into the Mac scene a little, I see it HAS been awhile. OS X is good- almost making me want to buy a Mac!

Well, Sound Recorder on my XP computer can't record the computer's sound from the sound card. (I tried setting to Line-In like I did in Win98 and it picked nothing up!) so I need a FREE program that can record my sound on the computer (as in, not the microphone, but the sound card)

Anyone know of one?

Thanks for the help there. Back when I used Windows 98 a lot, I could choose Line-In and it would record my computer's sound.

Just so you know, on my PC (maybe all Windows XP machines) Mixer is called Stereo Mix.

Floppies used to be useful and I always used them, until I got a CD Burner. I emptied my floppies, reformatted them, and sold them (Used Floppy Disks: Good Condition: only 5 cents a disk!)

Now I have a handy dandy 256MB USB key that kicks a**. The only thing I use floppies for is boot disks now (and transfer to my brothers old 486 since it's not connected to the network and the CDR's don't work on it)

I have this odd problem with my computer. Every once and a while, it will seem to freeze up. I can move the mouse but do nothing else. It stays like this for about 8 seconds, then the monitor goes black for a second and the screen reappears and everything works. What the heck is going on?

That's odd. At the time, the only thing I had running was Firefox. I'll see if there are some video driver updates. The screen saver wasn't running, and I hadn't been idle at all.

It's an ATI Radeon 9700. So it must be doing that. Normally no error message, but recently it went black and would not go back to what I was doing so I had to cut the power. It restarted and said I recovered from a serious error.

My changes don't take effect so technically the whole thing is frozen. It's also not just happened on Firefox, just mostly when it happens I am.

Posted on 03-29-05 10:54 PM, in Sonic Chaos Planet, a fangame! Link
Hi everyone. I've been working on a Sonic 3 clone called Sonic Chaos Planet for two months. I finally finished programming the game engine a while ago, so I released a second beta test. (the original wasn't good) Please help me by testing the game so far.

It is available at http://ksoftgames.digibase.ca/projects/scp/SCPEngineBeta2.exe

I'd like to know about any bugs in the engine. Also, I want your computer's processor speed, amount of RAM, and how fast it ran. I recommend not trying it on a Pentium 2, since I tested it on my old P2 450 with 320 MB RAM and it ran extremely slow.

Thanks!
