Funnily enough, PSU is a Big Ten university with such a ginormous football following that State College becomes the third largest city in Pennsylvania on home game weekends, and neither myself or Rando (who went there as well) ever gave a crap about football. We're just not sports people.

Rando downloaded it. I'd never played all the way through FFVII, but I know about most of the major characters and the biggest spoiler in the plot, so I figured I'd watch the movie. Well, I wasn't feeling so well this afternoon and the beginning didn't grab my interest all that much, and I don't like subtitles when I'm sleepy (I prefer mindlessly listening in a language I understand), so I wound up passing out on the floor instead. I caught the very end, and I see why some of you mentioned not thinking about the movie too much.

Spoiler:
So Cloud dies and magically reappears in this puddle of water. Uh, me confuzzled. That was when somebody in the room told me that if your girlfriend controls the life force of the planet, she can basically make stuff like that happen. I'm still confuzzled.

I'll give it another shot when it comes out in the theaters. Before then, I guess I should read the FFVII plot guide.

I was done with college and unemployed, and I thought I would use my programming knowledge and fuckton of free time to decode the level data for The Addams Family (SNES). I...didn't get very far. The board was (and still is) a spiffy community, so I had plenty else to talk about, and here I am four years later.

- As was mentioned, emulators are convenient because they allow you to save/reload state and apply cheats. ZSNES with infinite fez + invincibility made it a hell of a lot easier and faster for me to refresh my memory when writing my Addams Family FAQ. It's also cool to be able to bring an assload of old-school games on a GBA flash cart to take on a trip.

- They give you a chance to play all manner of old-school games that you missed out on.

- You can also play rarities that would be ridiculously difficult or impossible to find and unreleased games like Earthbound Zero that would probably be lost to the world if someone hadn't dumped an image.

- You don't have to worry about cart batteries dying or dodgy console power switches destroying your saved games. Randy's crappy SNES killed my 100% Kirby Super Star save, and I was not happy about that.

Dear Poofy Ass Bleached Blonde Moron,

Thirty-odd years ago, the national speed limit was dropped to 55 miles per hour because the country's gas supply was critically low and that is the most gas-efficient highway speed at which to drive. We may be on the verge of a similar crisis, and in any case, gas is ass-fucking-expensive. Thus, I am driving 55, which also happens to be the posted speed limit on this highway. Your attempts to insert the engine of your Lexus Hemorrhoid (what else should I call something that keeps riding my ass?) into my trunk whilst traveling at highway speeds will not conjure a metric fuckpile of cheap gas. Neither will waving your hands in a annoyed fashion. In fact, they will encourage me to ease off the accelerator because I think it is hil-fucking-arious to watch you get your suburbanite panties in a knot over something as utterly inconsequential at being five minutes late for your nail appointment. I also think it's funny that you apparently forgot all about the existence of the left lane, which is there so that you can (now here's a concept) PASS ME. Besides, if I happen to require a sudden stop and you rear-end me, you'll be paying out the nose because, in Pennsylvania, you're automatically at fault in that sort of accident. Ta!

Signed,

Someone who doesn't care to fill up at $3.15 a gallon if she can avoid it by driving more conservatively

Well...I think it was too advanced of a first project and I didn't have the optimal tool set for it. By screwing around with a hex editor and a disassembler, I found what appeared to be the beginning of a set of door pointers. I ran the ROM through the disassembler to see which parts of it were code so I wouldn't waste time changing them to garbage, and then I garbage-ized data blocks in the hex editor and loaded the ROM to see what I broke. At any rate, at the start of this block of data I found, I would change two bytes and the front door would lead to nothing (garbage or black nothingness). The next two bytes broke a door right after the first one. The pattern continued for a little while, and then the next two bytes did nothing and I could never figure out what the fark was going on. If I ever want to pick this back up, I'm going to need access to a SNES emulator with a debugger. Unfortunately, I am not naturally good at low-level programming, so this may not even be my type of project at all. I absolutely love the game, and I have patience for screwing around with stuff for hours on end, but that only goes so far. Maybe I should start trying to learn SNES ASM.

I also forgot to mention that I was recruited to help write an editor for Milon's Secret Castle. Now, that actually did go somewhere, but then I started working and didn't feel like getting paid to program and then going home to do the same. Later that year, I got OMG SUPAR HARDCORE into cosplay and I've been like that ever since. However...it looks like we won't be attending any more cons until far into the future (we were thinking about a March con, but Randy will probably be away on business), so I really ought to channel more of my free time into programming. At the very least, it may improve my resume and help me get a better job.

I started a game of it a few years ago and just never felt like getting very far. I probably got distracted by something else. I generally don't have much patience for long games any more. In most cases, you have to put a lot of time into them in a fairly short span of weeks (otherwise you forget what you were doing). After a certain point, time put into games feels like a chore. I don't remember being grabbed by FFVII when I played it, so I doubt I'd get anywhere if I tried to go through it now. Thus, it's much faster and easier for me to read a guide.

It's strange...I never thought I would become a Casual Gamer.

It's ass-fucking-expensive compared to its price in this area in recent memory (and especially expensive compared to a decade ago when I started driving...back then, the high-octane stuff was $1.40 a gallon). It has dropped to about $2.70/gallon for the cheap stuff, but still, if I can save money (and not have to worry about watching out for state troopers ), why not drive the speed limit? And even so, the impatient should use the fricking passing lane for its intended purpose instead of riding the ass of the person in front of them.

Speeding on the highway wouldn't make much of a difference in my gas mileage if it were an occasional outing, but I commute this way five days a week, so it constitutes the vast majority of my driving. I reset the trip meter each time I fill up to get an idea of what sort of fuel economy I'm getting, and I noticed that I got many more miles out of the tank this time around.

And my original complaint was about the person behind me driving like an asshead, not "ZOMG gas is like a million bazillion dollars we're all gonna DIE!!!11!!" Furthermore, you seem to have missed this pertinent phrase:

Thirty-odd years ago, the national speed limit was dropped to 55 miles per hour because the country's gas supply was critically low and that is the most gas-efficient highway speed at which to drive. We may be on the verge of a similar crisis

Meaning: "ZOMG the gas supply might become critically low! We did just lose a major drilling area and a bunch of refineries, so it is a valid concern! I'm going to cut back on gas consumption to be prudent!" So I was trying to conserve gas for that reason, too.

If you want to discuss gas prices, there's a thread in General about it. Can we return to talking about our socks? I only have a few pairs, but that's OK because I wear sandals as much of the year as possible. When you only wear socks 1 1/2 hours at a time for going to the gym, they don't tend to get gross right away, so you don't run out very quickly. I do need to wear them in the colder months, though. Perhaps I should buy more. Socks good.

I've never had the misfortune of driving in Jersey, but I've been driven around in there and I was damned glad that I wasn't behind the wheel. I'm a decent driver, but high-stress traffic like that drives me batshit. I don't even like traveling on the DC beltway as a passenger. I'm afraid that some moron doing 80 in their Hummer while turning around to yell at the kids in the backseat is going to plow right into me.

I grew up in Pittsburgh, which is a very convoluted maze of hills and weird streets, but the drivers are generally friendly, so I never learned to deal with roads where you have to constantly watch out for people cutting you off (and cut people off yourself if you ever want to get anywhere). State College traffic is pretty minor unless it's a football weekend (when it literally becomes the third largest town in Pennsylvania thanks to the hordes of traveling fans). In that case, I avoid driving as much as possible. We live right near town anyway, so if we want to go out to eat, we just walk or ride our bikes. If I have to go to the store, I wait until late at night when the crowds are asleep.

I've been lifting weights regularly for the past four years. My exact routine varies, but I generally alternate between a few months of strength-focused workouts (full-body 3 days/week routines based on major compound lifts like squats, deadlifts, bench presses, and chin-ups) and periods of "kinder, gentler" activity. Right now, I'm in a kinder, gentler phase because I have some weak points that are messing up my ability to safely lift heavy. Namely, some of my forearm muscles are wimpier than others (and as a result, I get the bad sort of discomfort when I try to do too many chin-ups, and my progress at the exercise is limited by my cranky forearms instead of by my back and bicep strength). Various weird little muscles in my shoulders and upper back need some help, too (so my heavy upper body lifts don't feel "crunky"), as do my abs and lower back. (A strong core is essential for weight training.)

To get all of that up to speed (and enjoy a change of pace at the same time), I'm basically mixing and matching high-rep sets of exercises that work my whole body (or at least major muscle groups) and provice some flexibility and stabilization work at the same time: dumbbell swings, dumbbell snatches, push-ups, wheel rollouts, planks (holding a push-up position). This is still challenging but in a different way from my usual form of weight training.

My favorite non-lifting exercise is jogging outside and bike riding. I'm still pretty wobbly on my new bike, but I like adventuring around town with Randy (who is much more confident and leads the way). I would like to do some more hiking as well. There are state forests with lots of abandoned mining remnants to see, and I have friends who know where such stuff is and enjoy going on excursions. Roaming around in the woods is fun.

Randy downloaded the Japanese version because he's impatient and because he could. We unlocked everything. And then we bought the US version and we're unlocking everything all over again. Nobody's complaining.

The sumo level is my favorite because it's funny and because it's one of the ones I can kick ass at without thinking much. (I need a lot of help with that danged school level. I love the concept, but it irritates me because you waste so much time if you pick the wrong room and can do little more than bump around.) And that OK Mr. Sunshine song owns my soul.

I haven't got this one yet, though. I played it at E3 and it didn't seem too different, other than the new multiplayer stuff. What makes this game much more different than the first? (Does it even have to be very different from the first to be good? If it ain't broke, don't fix it...)
It has more gameplay variety. The first game only had the following types of levels, and all of these are in the new one as well:

- Get as big as possible within a time limit.
- Get to a certain size without any size indicator.
- Collect as many of a certain type of object as possible.
- Collect one of a certain type of object. The stage ends as soon as you pick one up. For a better score, you must capture a large one.

The second game adds the following:

- Get to a certain size as fast as possible.
- Get as big as possible, but you are only allowed to pick up fifty objects.
- Collect as many of a certain type of object as possible and bring the katamari back to someone within the level within the time limit.
- Collect all of the objects within a stage as fast as possible.
- Run up some arbitrary counter not necessarily based on the size of your katamari as high as possible. For instance, there's a stage where you're supposed to form a katamari with a large monetary value (based on the prices of the objects you roll up). Granted, you can generally do well on these by getting hyoooge and rampaging over everything, but it's still not EXACTLY the same as simply getting hyoooge.
- Get the katamari as big as possible and roll up a woodpile with it. The catch is that the katamari is on fire and the fire will go out if you go too long between picking up objects (or you fall in the river). This one's tough.
- Get the katamari as big as possible and roll it on top of a snowman body. This one's interesting because there's no time limit and the katamari's size increases just from being rolled around in the snow. It's an easy relaxing stage that requires some patience to attain a high score in.

I think that overall, the "collect certain items" stages are more fun and interesting in We Love Katamari. There's one where you change the weather by rolling up clouds. The stage starts out dark and gloomy, but it becomes brighter as you proceed. In another stage, you collect fireflies at night. I honestly didn't care for most of the collection levels in the original game because they became a boring game of "hunt the such-and-such".

There's also more stage variety. In addition to the house, town, and world areas similar to those in the first game, you'll roll around in a school, an underwater area, a campsite, and a dreamy flower garden.

You can play as any cousin you want on single player, and there are more presents to pick up. This doesn't change the gameplay any, but it is nifty.

The basic gameplay is pretty much the same, but We Love Katamari doesn't feel like the same thing all over again simply because the stages are different and there are many new objectives. They did take an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach with the gameplay, which is A Very Good Thing(tm) for fans of the original.

I never heard of this game before now. (I'm not exactly "with it" when it comes to game news.) So I looked it up...and damn, now I'm thinking that I'll need to go get a DS. Randy and I hadn't been particularly interested in either of the new handhelds...but I'm such a Symphony of the Night fangirl that I would consider purchasing a DS just for this. *covets* And there evidently will be a Dynasty Warriors game for the DS. If that's any good, then there goes my main reason for leaning toward the PSP.

Wow.

Lately I've been in the mood for routines based on bodyweight exercises (like different types of squats, lunges, pushups, and pullups). I tried this one yesterday. I had to do pushups on knees instead of the divebomber thingies (my pushups are WEAK because I couldn't do them without pain for, well, over a year while my shoulders were messed up, so I'm extremely out of practice) and I still couldn't make it through the entire thing. My chest is screaming at me today. It's a fun workout, though, and I know I'll get better at it if I keep trying. For at least the next month, I'll give it my best effort 3 days a week and do other exercise on the off days as I like. I didn't really beat the crap out of my legs yesterday because I got a knee twinge well before they started getting fried, so I had to stop, so I think I'll do sprints tonight.

Oh, and I completely agree that it's best to lay off exercise if you're sick. If you have a bit of a snuffle and feel otherwise OK, it's one thing, but if you're feeling crappy, you'll get a subpar workout and probably delay your recovery.

I'd love to get a Nano at some point. I've wanted a truly lightweight and unobtrusive mp3 player for a while because I like listening to music when I work out. When you're jogging, anything noticeably bulky or heavy gets really annoying really quickly, especially if there's no good way to carry it. I got a Rio about four years ago, but I didn't use it much because there wasn't any nice secure case or armband for it, and it was enough of a lump that it got on my nerves when I put it in my pocket. In contrast, a Nano is basically nothing, and you can buy an armband that makes carrying it a non-issue. Also, I don't have any particular interest in carrying ginormous amounts of music around with me (or using a mp3 player as a portable drive for giant piles of data), so I wouldn't use the massloads of space on larger-capacity mp3 players, and the Nano would be fine for general-purpose mp3 listening as well.
