You mean something NOT in their pants.

I mean anyone that logged in recently. If I had a hole in any system-critical process you could theoretically log in over SSH (which is disabled now) with the stolen password and gain access somehow.

Linux is extremely secure. Unfortuanetely, it cloned UNIX a little --too-- much in the sense of default security flaws. Open root accounts that go unnoticed by many, for example.

I'm not saying that Linux is perfect and uncrackable when all proper measures are taken, of course. Because it's not.
"Linux is extremely secure." And so's Windows 2003 Server (with current hotfixes applied, ofcourse) and Mac OS X Server. What's your point? An OS can only be so secure "out of the box". A good OS will let you mess around and will inevitably lead to you opening up MORE holes. This is probably what happened with my box.

I'll start up the box now and look what's been damaged. If it turns out that something critical is changed - such as the root password - and I can't repair it (I should be able to) - I'm afraid there will be more downtime as I'll reinstall this shit again (or switch to Windows). Otherwise, I'll continue to use the current setup as SSH is now blocked from the internet. It'd now be theoretically IMPOSSIBLE to get in over the internet unless some other security hole was opened.

Well, for one it doesn't layer four to nine CSS background-images to create the same effect, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't validate either.

If you took that seriously, go have brain surgery.

Ok, we're back live. I've used a "hardening" script that tightens security through black magic, messing with permissions and general hoo-haa. SSH access is now also NOT AVAILABLE TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD, which makes sure that if someone manages to get the password or whatever the person can NOT LOG IN. This will not affect normal wootest operations, to the short extent that wootest operations are normal .

NO. It was a part of the CSS spec already in 1.0, and it continues to be a part of it. It's a general measure of precedence that can be applied in ANY stylesheet. http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS1#important

It's in beta now, thus invitation-only.

As for "too good to be true", this was actually announced on April 1 as part of some sick scheme to make us think it was an april fools joke, which it wasn't, so they sort of fooled us that way too!

SSH is basically a secure Telnet. SSH includes encryption. Telnet is a way of remotely logging in to a machine in text or graphics mode to control it. I can still use SSH in the local network now, it's just not available from the internet (which I would have used when away, but I think I have an alternate solution to that now).

The way Linux or similar Unix variants are insecure like that is because most people set their system up with a basic distro and think they are secure. So this way, scriptkiddies can use exploits common to some distros to get in. It's the same procedure in Windows, but there are only about three major server versions out there (NT 4, Windows 2000 and Windows 2003) and the people using it most likely patch it more often than those installing Linux, which requires a lot more knowledge of what's going on. And since Windows is handled by ONE vendor, there's one fix, and you don't have to keep track of what version of what distro you have. That's basically it.

Gmail gives you ten times that, and it supports almost all browsers, which means that Google is both richer and smarter than Yahoo. Owned.

W-hat

Yahoo's been in the Internet/Advertisement business for about 10 years, AND the offer MUCH more than Google ever will or could. How does Google launching a mail service with a useless amount of space create the illusion that Google's both smarter and richer?

Sure, Google has some damn awesome things under their belt, but Yahoo is still the most useful website on the Internet.

(btw, stop using Mozilla, and all your problems go away! )
First of all, "stop using Mozilla, and all your problems go away!" is as poignant and useful as "Quit your job and you won't be underpaid or risk getting fired".

Look at Yahoo's front page. Then look at Google's front page. Google's is much cleaner, because they only create services that make sense to them as an immediate goal. I'm pretty sure Google makes more money from their own text-based ads than Yahoo does from its big distracting image ads.

How the money argument came up in the first place? Gmail is free, and will be free. And if one user will have one GB, and say three million people sign up, that's a lot of disk space that will have to be bought.

"AND the offer MUCH more than Google ever will or could"
Keyword here is could. Google could make most of this if not all of this if they wanted to. However, take Gmail for example, they rigorously beta test everything (third month and running). Yahoo clearly doesn't beta test very much, seeming as how about a tenth of the Internet (not running IE/Win) is left with a buggy webmail.

And we haven't even gotten to the point yet where I argue that they just do information management. Webmail, search, weblogging app, usenet groups, filtered news. There's no java games in here. It's not needed, and it's way out of their field.

What's been the biggest surprise to you guys so far?

Besides Sweden thrashing Bulgaria 5-0 within a year of losing to EGYPT, of all countries three to nil, I certainly didn't expect Greece at the top of their group after two rounds.

Yep. It's new, it's for Symbian-based phones, Nokia phones with the Series 60 OS in them I think. It spreads via Bluetooth, this wireless standard they have for connecting stuff wirelessly. And the 30 feet is the maximum range of bluetooth.

*minor bump* I'm sorry to break this to you, but if you want full-height columns with background images and stuff, you'd be better off using a very basic <table> for the column setup and then use divs within. This is because CSS currently doesn't have column support. CSS3 has it, but that's still in draft.

No, it sucks because it sucks. Maybe he dislikes him for other reasons and also this, but to believe that you can't accurately critizise someone (or something done by someone) because you're not best friends with them is just being naive.
