Yep, I'm a newbie. I orginate from the citadel so I suppose I'm quite evil and unecessarily cruel. (I also wear a pointed helmet and have a waxed moustache)

Other than that, I mess around on mb's wasting my time so that I fail at Uni and fall behind in most of my studies. I see a few people I know...I hope they know who I am. As for everyone else, I hope I'll be reasonably received...

I could swear I've seen you here a bit before, but otherwise I know I at least saw you on a few other boards (and of course FF7Citadel) ... welcome here

yep, I was here before but was killed off by an accidental member cull and never got round to getting my account reinstated. Although I believe you've had a reset since then so I hope a new account is ok.

I drink far too much coke than is good now I'm back home...I tried to cut back whilst away and drank a lot of water instead. I still drank it but damn...it was expensive to keep that addiction going. Hell go with Pepsi, its much cheaper and almost identical in flavour. Don't go too cheap though. Even relatively pricey Virgin Cola tastes like crap

In college?

Yup.

Writing Essays?

Yup

What am I writing now? s'posed to be writing two. One on Alexis de Tocqueville and the other on Dracula, Amos Barton and The Beach of Falesa all rolled into one (haven't chosen the question yet)

The worst ever essay was probably back in college a couple of years back...A-level english, essay exam paper worth 60% of the grade and I bombed...got just over 50%. Couldn't get into Uni and had to resit year after. The best was next year when I took the same exam again and scored 100%

I'm okay at essays...this year I've been leaving them to the last minute...to the point where I have to pull an all nighter to get it written and typed up. Sometimes still end up adding the conclusions 1 hour before the deadline. I must be okayish with the words because I haven't gone below a 2:1 yet

I'm not that worried about it. I've never been stupid enough to arrogantly think my Mac was always going to be immune. As they become more popular...so will the dangers. I'll just keep doing what I always do, regularly run my software update, keep up the firewall and scan my laptop every week.

hopefully that will be enough

I used to get stuff which like most was the usual MAKE IT 3 FEET LONGER!! things but my ISP which I also use as my main e-mail recently intro'd a bulk folder which so far seems to have successfully eradicated the problem. Of course I don't expect it to last and soon I'll get stuff again.
Whats best is I no longer get these panicky phonecalls from my dad. He used to get those e-mails trying to sell him anti-virus stuff with subjects along the lines of "Your Anti-Virus is out of date" or "You (possibly) have a Virus!!" yet he never learnt to recognise them as spam and would constantly harass me to "deal with it"

On a semi related issue....Click for justice

So what are you saying? Back out of what? They should just give up and stop manufacturing because MS already have a monopoly and so no one should be able to choose if they want a Mac anymore?

*ouch* nasty story

Reminds me of my first week of high school. It was the first P.E class and all us boys were being made to have a shower which was the first time most of us had ever been totally naked around other guys...so we were all really nervous and apprehensive. Turned out to be okay and a bit of a relief for most of us. The problem though was that as we were having these showers, my best friend got a boner. Don't know why as he isn't gay...probably just the excitement or cruel hormones.

He tried his best to hide it but someone noticed it and shouted it out for everyone to hear. It quickly spread through the entire school...pretty embarrassing for my best bud that was.

Taryn...was this the one you've mentioned elsewhere? You said that there was one you were working on where you yourself actually liked it and I think you mentioned folds.

If it is then i can see why. My one attempt at trying folds left me bitter and eager to kill...

Tom Hanks' son was also in one episode (towards the end) playing a fresh young officer who quickly gets promoted into a danger free job I seem to remember.

I think Band of Brothers is far superior to Saving private Ryan...I also like the fact that quite a few of the American Soldiers are played by British Actors

Catch 22 remains one of my favourite books of all time. But i know plenty of people that simply don't like it as its all over the place.

As for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas....thats a great book. I seem to remember reading it in about a day and thought it was the funniest things I'd ever read. its also one of the few things where the film adaptation of it has actually done it justice. I'm actually about to start Hunter. S. Thompsons latest book when I next get a free moment, King of Fears but I have to read The Bluest Eye first.

Another good book is American Psycho. Much better than the film in my opinion but really uncomfortable to read. I was told before hand that the violence would get to me but i was certain I could handle it. However the people were right and American Psycho remains the only book that has ever made me feel actual nausia.

hah...I've read it twice.

I found it quite easy to get through but then it is a love or loath kind of book. Some people don't mind that it is has this completely garbled plot with the time shooting back and forth every chapter and others simply hate it and find it too confusing.

The point really is that its kind of meant to be confusing to a certain extent.

I'll try and explain it without too many spoilers but its late so it may not come off very well...

The basic storyline follows Yossarian who is stuck in the situation of warfare and wishes to escape. This is partly why the book can be confusing to read as the setting is presented in such a bizarre way e.g. you have loads of bizarre and surreal events and characters combined with a plot which is all over the place in terms of actual time. This basically is to just show the madness of war in general I suppose.

Anyway, the notion of Catch-22 ties into this in that all Yossarian's attempts to escape conflict are blocked by absurd rules. Technically there are ways to get out of the war but in each case...there is a catch which means it isn't actually realistically possible. The best example I can think of is when Yossarian asks the Doctor if there is anyway in which the Doctor can ground him and stop him from flying. The Doctor says he can if Yossarian is crazy. Yossarian says he is crazy and the doctor agrees with him. the Doctor explains that anyone who continues to fly suicidal bombing missions must be crazy but the Doctor doesn't ground these people as he isn't allowed to ground anyone without them asking him to. So Yossarian immediately asks to be grounded as he's crazy. The Doctor then tells him that he can't ground him because now that he has asked to be grounded, he shows a clear desire to no longer fly suicidal missions and thus can't be crazy.

The whole book is full of other catch-22 like this which are basically used to give out the old war is mad thang

Get a rope, get a tree, let's hang the referee.

The goal that was disallowed was fine in my eyes. I'm bias as hell but normally when I scream that the goal was fine, there's a little part of me that admits it wasn't. However after every single replay, I was genuinely bemused as to why he disallowed that one. The referee was not very consistent in his decisions at all.

plus the Portugal keeper blatantly went for all the glory. He saved the crucial one then sent the Portugese player away so he could score the winner and take all the glory. I hope his teammates shun him...or that he collides painfully with the post in his next game
