1. Actually, there are four elephants. Great T'Phon, Bereilia, Jerakeen, and Tubul. They support the world, while standing on the back of Great A'Tuin, a giant turtle.

As a side note, this is suspiciously and facinatingly similar to the legend of Bahamut...
