Posted on 02-03-05 05:28 PM, in What instrument you play, foo!? Link
Hmmm, I played the piano for seven years - although it was classic music only (prefering Beethovens "Mondscheinsonate"), if I ever have the opportunity to use a piano/keyboard, it is something like an addiction to play something on that
I also would play known music tracks from movies or games, because the music is very important for me when I watch a movie or play a game. It is also funny to try playing music on that instrument usually not possible to do that (like tracks from Apocalyptica's CDs and such).

Later I finished the lessons when I was 13 years old (my mother was not angry , she payed the teacher - I did it voluntary and never regretted that ) due to the mass of practice I'd need to become a pianist (the teacher claimed I had the talent, since in my family there were many people with musical skill/musicians). And you got other interests in that age, but as said, beginning as a hobby wouldn't mind me but be nice to hit the keys again

Windows XP Home with SP2 and all bugfixes installed. Wanna keep that thing clean as long as possible.
Also I've financial software on that computer which requires Windows to work properly.
On the other hand I already tried Knoppix from a CD - it might be not that bad to try out an alternate operating system.

I use my PC for surfing, working and emulation only, I have no certain needs. If something fails, I simply reinstall XP again. I paid that OS (yes, there are people also BUYING software out in that world

Firefox suits my needs, a few days ago I made a clean install, since some pages could not be opened because one, two extensions messed up (anyway I had a bunch of them installed, way too much ).
Thunderbird is also slim, I check it maybe once or twice a day (or if someone announced me to send something, like password recovery mails; it is not THAT much work to click one button in my Quick Launch bar).

Since then Firefox is again one of fastet browser ever. When I'll get DSL and my flatrate, I will enable pipelining to experience even more speed.

Currently listening to Apocalyptica's "Distraction" from their newest album "Apocalyptica" (hence the name).
A nice track, along to heavy metal beats/e-guitar the known leading instrument is a cello; as known from that heavy metal band.

"Life Burns!", "Fisheye" or the ballad "Farewell" are also some neat tracks, although I get an impression, that album is already slightly commercialized, to its music (like not relying too much on their main purposes - cello and rock/metal only, but mixing with other styles).

It still is a good album (although "Cult" was slightly better - pretty cheap and very powerful and innovative music, like "Path" for example), but I hope they will remain where there was and not end up like Metallica and others.
Would be a pity to see these three people be 'lost' in the mills of commercialization

This was my first AcmlmBoard (okay, if you take it clearly, the second one, since the old one crashed )
later I registered also on ProtoBoard and on Erk's, I think. But I've never been too active except on that one here
I also translated a AcmlmBoard 1.8 to German, would even do that if there was a way to code different languages like in phpBBs and others

Animated GIFs in RM2k, wow, I never heard about that ?
Usually you can use only BMP and PNG for image ressources.
There is an option to import XYZ-data (original, for RM2k unknown formats), but if the additional information added in animated GIFs is conserved in RM2k after import, is another question .. or if it even works that way.

The easiest way might be to use panoramas in the background and/or chipsets. With transparent chips and good Battle Animations there can be achieved a lot.
Hence a looping BA (like a fire cast from the RTP, set up in a Common Event) while you move characters in a destroyed town - it is burning and you experience that in a good way

For now, just get a RM2k/3 help file or tutorials, until the help file will be translated fully.. Most of the parts are taken from RM2k/3, so the Event and the Map Editor, functionality of importing resources and so on work like in 2k and 2k3.

As for Ruby, you can find a very good tutorial and explanation of every part on http://www.phylomortis.com/.

I installed MS AntiSpyware yesterday to throw it down again. I never ran into too much spyware on that machine; Alexa was on the way, yes, what always is implemented in a virgin Windows and Internet Explorer
I'm not in a need to run another tool, although the GUI was looking neat and the program scanned the files deeply

I'm satisfied with the triple combo Firefox, Spybot and AdAware, never got any tracking cookie or other malicious thing after using these three, along with regular scans with an up-do-date antivirus.

Common filters like in phpBBs can be bypassed easily. So we might need an intelligent filter which filters out also HTML or board code.
If know a phpBB, where the word "ROM" is censored.

When I wanted to write "ROM-hacks" (when I only mention that - hacks themselves don't include the actual ROM usually), I could write

ROM-hacks

and easily wipe out the filter. Or simply user another BB-tag or combine then to outran the word censor.
Hence spam mails: v.i.a.g.r.a or V!4gr4; a filter won't recognize that - but we can read that

PNG is my favourite format, unless I want to create animated images (MNG still is very unknown) or want to show large image files like desktop wallpapers, this done with JPG.
Although I'm using Miranda IM, I hope that program is somehow safe; it uses its own MSN protocol, but on the other hand these exploits are also affecting other applications, like HH said

Whatever, even without these security issues, MSN is a way-overcrowded messenger for me. Easy camera and voice support might be good, but hence a naked Miranda IM like Firefox:

In the first start up it is "naked", but once you install the plugins (extensions for Firefox), you'll be able to customize it in your needs. No crappy buggy MSN errors, far less RAM usage and started up in less than two seconds

I didn't have a computer then, but I learned to use DOS 3.1 early enough.
There was always fun to edit files like autoexec.bat, trying to set up soundblaster and other configuration options in games manually and other things

Even today it is not bad to have DOS knowledge, though Win ME and later operating MS systems have no true DOS environment anymore.

Commands like cd, format and others are used anyway (regardless of newly implemented commands; such as convert.exe for transforming FAT32 drives into NTFS drives; since Windows 2000 is that possible).
The first GUI I used, was Windows 95, too. Meh, using the mouse and a weird manager, called "Windows-Explorer", pointing into a popping up start-menu then ...

I prefer a combination of PSP8 and The GIMP 2 for picture editing. Since the last one starts up in a couple of seconds, uses only a little more than 20 MB or RAM, it is great for pasting screenshots and such; the FU script filter engine also is very neat.

PSP8 has a good layout and finally I can reach the current tool's setting in the main window without the need to have a floatin window (such as thickness of a pen and so on).
Sadly the start up time is much longer than version 7, but then I'll go with GIMP for smaller edits.
For created animated GIFs, nothing beats Animation Shop Pro. Easy, very fast and a perfect user interface make the decision for me easy.

That's not even basically the system, but simply the resources the program uses. And that's the only real negative part I noticed with PSP8.

I have an AMD XP 2800+ CPU with Barton core, along with 512 DDR-RAM(PC 400) and Windows XP Home with all updates. When I'm using the computer, I usually have more than 300 MB left when Firefox and Thunderbird are open for example (so the required 60+ MB for PSP8 are no problem) - and PSP8 takes nearly 20 seconds to start it up, when it is not cached. PSP7 started up much faster than that

Is that joystick plugged in via standard gameport or using USB ?

When the "hair cross" is jumping around while in the calibration screen, the joystick is not okay anymore.
I noticed similar problems with my Logitech USB Dual Action.
It would be the best game pad ever (identical PS pad layout, two analogue sticks), IF it was more stable ...
After three months, and I didn't play that intensively, the left analogue stick is worn off, either with Logitech Gaming Software active or not (where it reports games like Diablo II or Starcraft to be being able played with a joypad/stick

That's the way, I think, not only browsers for example.
Like ICQ 5. They may put in ten thousend features, but I never use all features. For speech there is Skype, which is for free and can use everyone with a broadband connection (on smallband it uses up a part of the connection speed), video may be limited to MSN or maybe other messengers, but anyway I doubt all people turn on video chat always

Also I don't like ad-banners when I'm chatting.
But although we're using Firefox and such, we should be careful.
Before Firefox 1.0 PR (yes, I'm talking about preview release) was out, they were already few trojans, using .xpi endings, which affected Mozilla.
But, the developers reacted and added a install software block feature. A whitellist-powered feature which first blocks all attempts to install software first. MS don't react on errors, this is especially annoying, because I paid about 90 Euros for my Windows XP Home license.
So I at least expect some functionality

||bass got the point. They also could name it "Windows XP Crippled Edition" for instance. The average user might think "Oh, no, an important thing is missing!" and get the "full" version of the OS.

Whatever, I'm using Media Player ... Classic for videos, since it uses less RAM, is not that overcrowded and simply fits my needs. It is also already included in the K-Lite Codec Pack, so it is a nice alternative though I've enough resources to run WMP9 smoothly (WMP10 ? Never.)

FreeDOS: I didnt' uninstall WMP9 on that machine( I use it only then, when I copy my audio CDs (!) on my computer to search the media library for ID3 tag information), but on my old Windows 98/ME computers, the uninstall _didn't_ remove WMP, but left an older version on the operating system. So the skinned Media Player 7 got away and was replaced with a much smaller version (which was anyway better when I had crappy 64 MB SD-RAM then only).
So this also might end up like that. Or MS puts in some *obvious* hints for first "unknown" file formats:
"We recommend Windows Media Player 10 for that AVI file. This player will fit your needs and you will be able to get it for FREE even in your RME edition via Windows Update ..."

Edit: The product will be renamed, since the EU courts registered there's something fishy with that name:
An english article. Also follow the link of MS' acception, it is quite interesting.

For, whoever, a German page explaining that

First, uninstalling must be done - this is the best way to remove Blizzard's SC keys than to delete entries by hand and maybe leaving some fragments in the registry.

The best thing might be to copy the CD again, so it can be mounted with Daemon Tools or Nero ImageDrive for example, this is better than using a No-CD crack.
I'm doing this also with broodwar and I'm independent from No-CD cracks, since these have to be updated every time a new patch wil be released, like 1.12 just recently.

A combination of PSP8 and GIMP 2.
GIMP 2 is used for pasting screenshots fast, working with semitransparent PNGs and stuff. For all other things I prefer PSP8, since the UI improved. Only the very long loading time compared to version 7 sucks
