Yeah, simple enough question -- what OS(s) are you running?
What OS(s) are you running? You can select more than one for multiple OS(s) List is fairly generic to avoid me listing hundreds of distros and variants of things. If you want to be more specific, do so in your post. :)

Simple question -- which Operating Systems are you running?

You can vote more than once for those of you who run multiple OS's for various reasons.

List is very generic -- I would rather see you elaborate on this in your post

OS X 10.3, Windows XP Pro, Fedora Core. I mention Fedora because I intend to revive an old box and run Fedora again even though the old server failed.

I would rather see the Win9x line and the Win NT line seperated. I see them as two diffrent series, even if there is little combitality between them.

Fedora core 2 on my old Pentium II, althought it runs as crap on that computer. I think I blame on the computer itself, Win XP wouldn't run that good either on it. I would like a light distro for that one... <.<

Win98 on that computer too, and I have Win XP on this computer. Windows 2000 on my computer in my room and Windows 95 on my 486. And there is another 486 under my bed which just have DOS and 3.11.

And my sister have Windows 2000 on hers.

I was planning to install Fedora core on a unused partition on this computer, but never got around. Little afraid to do it just, and no time. -.-;

I'll agree with Kitten Yiffer's sentiment that the Windows 9x and NT line should be regarded as separate. After all, GNU+Linux is separated from Unix & BSD. Plus I think Mac OS X should have been separated from Classic Mac OS, since they are very different systems (OSX being in the same family as Unix/BSD).

But, not a whole lot can be done about that now. It'll be difficult, but I'm sure we, as a board, can find the strength in our hearts to go on.

That said, I myself am running Slackware 10 (GNU+Linux) as my primary OS, with Windows 98 S.E. still shelved away on the smaller of my two HDDs.

Windows XP with Cygwin

Windows XP has never given me problems like it has to other people. Not sure what happens on other people's computers so yeah. I use Cygwin to be able to have a little flavor of UNIX on my computer for webserving and PHP processing (and to do my CS homework).

I would switch to a non-Windows OS (like Mac or some version of Unix, though not Linux) except a lot of what I do needs Windows--particularly video processing. If there are good video processors with video capture capbility through firewire, I'd probably switch the next time I redo the OS.

Windows XP Home is running on this computer. I'd like to try a new OS sometime in the future, but that would require me getting my own computer, as this one is my Dad's, and he wouldn't take too kindly to me doing stuff he doesn't know about I haven't had any computer-breaking problems with the OS, although there are some small things that I don't like about it.

We had Windows 98 SE on our old computer. There are some good memories I have of using that, but I wouldn't want to go back to it

Windows XP Home with SP2 and all bugfixes installed. Wanna keep that thing clean as long as possible.
Also I've financial software on that computer which requires Windows to work properly.
On the other hand I already tried Knoppix from a CD - it might be not that bad to try out an alternate operating system.

I use my PC for surfing, working and emulation only, I have no certain needs. If something fails, I simply reinstall XP again. I paid that OS (yes, there are people also BUYING software out in that world

I primarily run Slackware 10. Windows 2000 is on a second partition to sit there.

I sometimes install operating systems that just don't go well with emulators... such as BeOS, Solaris 10, etc.

Debian unstable is teh w00t. I've been running it exclusively on my dual Athlon machine for over two years. I like it because it's free and very stable (despite its name), and it offers an assload of quality free software to choose from (and a well-designed package management system making it simple to add and remove said software) and different desktop environments to use as well. (I honestly don't care for the "taskbar + desktop icons + start menu" paradigm - I prefer multiple desktops, a box to put minimized applications in, and a menu that I can access by clicking on the desktop. I ran Enlightenment for a while, but I'm now using XFCE4 because it has antialiased fonts and can be made to behave in mostly the same way.) I can do pretty much anything I want to under Linux. If I were into computer gaming, serious graphics editing, or fancy music production, it wouldn't be the right OS for me, but as it stands, I have no complaints.

Ever heard of GIMP or Audacity?

With regards to graphics editing...GIMP never actually did what I needed it to do. It's why I got a Mac, and it's why I still keep my Windows install. But then -- Graphics Editing will depend entirely though on what you need to do as far as that goes. For most people who would otherwise use Photoshop for resizing images and stuff, the GIMP will suit them fine.

But yeah, I use Windows (XP), Mac (OSX Panther) and Linux (Fedora) and now find myself using the Mac the most.

At work I use many versions of Windows. I think all of them?

The only advantage that Photoshop has is CMYK support, which few people need anyway.

Yes, I have, and I've used both. When I refer to serious or high-end work, I'm referring to the level on which professionals operate, not just making nifty crap at home. GIMP is pretty nice for its price (I recommend it to people looking for free/cheap graphics software), I enjoy using it for my graphics editing needs, and it's fine for most people's needs. However, it still lacks features that I liked in Photoshop, such as dynamic layer effects, and like Tarale said, it lacks features that are essential to graphics pros. For example, those who work with print media need a color matching system to ensure that the image will look exactly the same when printed. This Slashdot comment I found while researching the issue explains it a bit more.

As far as sound is concerned, Rosegarden (which I haven't played with yet) is much more capable than Audacity. It's billed as a free alternative to Cubase. It does look pretty helpful, but I would need more than that if I wanted to basically set up my own home recording studio. I don't know of any Linux software that will allow me to make custom patches for my Yamaha S80 and upload them to the keyboard. (The S80 does have a nice selection, but MIDI composition just isn't the same unless you can roll your own sounds.) I know you can hook up the keyboard and dump data back and forth, but I can't find any interface for patch editing.

Both Pantone and ICC are proprietary, that alone is reason enough for the GIMP developers to not include them. They are developing their own CMYK solution, but it's very early and needs to have a configure option while compiling just to get it. If they dropped the moral values they base their software on and decide to use either or both, it would be extremely expensive.

I'm not really sure about dynamic layer effects, as I only have access to Photoshop 5 which has no such thing. But I've seen screenshots of the newer ones, and with the exception of the Mac version, it still has that ugly and useless grey window that was a workaround for a thing in Windows 3.1.

I am not a graphics professional, but graphics is a hobby that I take very very seriously.

I actually do find the graphics stuff a barrier to my being able to use Linux more as an OS. The GIMP does not do what I need it to do -- not just as an alternative to Photoshop, but it also isn't an acceptable alternative to other software that I need to use to create my artwork.

It's cause of this that I got a Mac. I'm fed up with Windows, I'm really really sick of it and all the patching and weirdness. I use it for work, but otherwise I would rather be free of Windows. I can't do what I need to do with graphics in Linux though either -- so I have a Mac.

I love my Mac. But I would also love to see more professional tools and more varied/specialised tools on Linux too for artists.

Lessee...

PC #1: Windows 98 SE
PC #2: Windows 98 SE dual boot w/Windows 2000 Pro
PC #3: Windows 98 SE

The Windows 2000 install is in there because I planned on buying DOOM 3 eventually, and it needs 2K or higher, as do a lot of new programs being released. XP ain't never touching one of my machines, not when 2K is basically the same thing without all the bloat.
