Posted on 02-24-05 05:17 PM, in Anarchy: What would it look like? Link
Talking about Anarchy without knowing Bakunin is like talking about Communism without knowing Marx. He was the "founder" of anarchistic thought, and thus is someone you should have a basic knowledge about to discuss anarchy.

That being said, I don't hold much knowledge about Bakunin beyond the basics, but anarchism is one of the political movements I know the least about, as well. I still feel I may have some thoughts that can contribute, based on the little I do know.

The way I see it, anarchy works as a basis for a new kind of government, but nothing more. To have a change of system, you would need a revolution (at least if you want to do things swiftly), which would bring society to a state of anarchy. Maintaining a stable situation of anarchy would not work, however, as certain groups would gather quite quickly and decide how things should be done. That would be your first signs of a new government right there. After a longer (or shorter) period of turmoil and unstability, one group will have gained a certain amount of control, and will then start to dictate rules, this will go on, until you again have a society with rules, and a ruling elite. The system of government in the new society depends heavily on the group of people that manage to win control.

The only way I see that you can maintain a true state of anarchy is by having a strong, ruling, powerful elite with the sole purpose of keeping people from gaining any power, and keeping rules from actually being enforced, but that wouldn't really be anarchy, now, would it?

I find Symphony Metal quite poor (granted, the only band I've heard is Nightwish, I'm sure I could find some I liked had I heard more), but my friend, who is into that stuff, says that this Dutch band, Within Temptation, is really good.

Well, I don't know about the US, but Nightwish is quite famous over here in Europe. They had that one song, Nemo, that topped the charts and all. I haven't heard much else, but I found that one to be quite bland.

Around 11am: Wake up, shower, get dressed
Around 12am: Catch the bus to get to the university, study there
Anywhere between 16am-20am: Leave university, head for the student pub, eat dinner, be with friends
Around midnight: Go home, watch some TV, sleep.

That's a general outline of a busy day, it's not always like that, but many days are so.

If I had ever walked up to a farmer and asked him how much he'd think people would pay him not to slaughter his cows, he'd probably think I was quite crazy. I don't see how you anyone can find this cruel, except if they are vegetarians, but then they should find all slaughter cruel, and this shouldn't be an extraordinary thing or something.

Right, and farmers never nurse their animals, nor do they claim to love them so much every single time you see them on TV?

Jump Around - not that it will actually work, all a jump like that might cause is a slight earthquake, experts say, but it will certainly not push the earth off its axis.

Generally, U.N. scientists say that global warming is because of human beings (they disagree, however, how much it is because of human beings), many non-U.N. scientists say the same thing, while a few rather right-wing scientists claim human beings don't have nothing to do with global warming. Now, I know the majority of scientists have been in the wrong during disputes over different paradigms earlier in history, and they might as well be wrong now, as well. However, I still trust the scientists claiming global warming is because of human beings to some extent.

Scientists have been right-wing, left-wing, centrist, whatever since the day scientists stopped being all-powerful beings that actually managed to look away from their own political opinions when stating something, I guess...

Seriously, though. Generally, what I mean by right-wing scientists are scientists who are in one way or another affiliated with organizations whose interests lies near what one would normally classify as "right-wing" (at least economically). Now, of course there are those independent scientists who agree with the point of view that human intervention has nothing to do with global warming, but I'm basically generalizing in my statements here.

As for the U.N. scientists, as I call them, they are scientists set by the U.N. to research global warming so that they can advise the U.N. and the global community on what, if anything, could and should be done about it. The general viewpoint of these scientists is that human interference has an effect on global warming. They are not being adivsed or told to go in a certain direction in their research. Not that this doesn't mean that they're unbribable, they're, after all, human, but why wouldn't they then be bribed by rich industry-owners, wanting to destroy the image of global warming as a humanly created problem?

I, *cough*, "aquired" the Blue Collar Comedy Tour quitre some time ago. I also do quite enjoy Bill Engvall (the third guy in the show) (and have done so after I heard his show on an mp3 that a friend of mine, *ahem*, "aquired" a few years ago), so, yeah, I second these guys being funny.

Bill Engvall has this famous "here's your sign" routine. Basically, he once proposed that all stupid people should wear a sign which showed that they were, in fact, stupid, and then told some stories about some people who acted incredibly stupid, and then simulated handing them a sign. This became a famous Bill Engvall-thing, so he kept his "here's your sign" routine, and though it might not be as famous as Mr. Foxworthy's "you might be a redneck...", I find it a lot more funny...

"Got your truck stuck?"
"Nope, I was just deliveing this overpass and my car ran out of gas"
"... here's your sign"

This should explain some things about the "here's your sign" routine...

Posted on 03-03-05 05:04 AM, in Your Hauls: Bought CDs, DVDs? Link
Let's see, I recently updated my DVD collection with 4 more DVDs. Two music-DVDs from a band that I enjoy very much (Live By The Sea and ...There And Then, both Oasis concert recordings from the mid-nineties), and two classic movies.

The two movies that I bought are movies that should belong in any respectable collection.
The first is The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (the special edition). This is a classic that shouldn't actually need an introduction, since, well, everyone should have seen it already. But, well, it's basically about these three guys during the American Civil War, and their road to a fortune in gold (very generally speaking). Basically, "this is not a cowboy-movie, this is the cowboy-movie".
The second movie I bought is The Longest Day, another movie that really doesn't need an introduction, as it also one you should already have seen. I dare you to find me a movie with a cast with more stars, though, I'd be very impressed. For those who don't know this movie, it's about the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6th 1944 (the D-Day), and though it may not be as visually stunning as Saving Private Ryan (it is, after all, a black/white movie from 1962), it kicks ass like nothing else story-wise.

Yeah, I love the raw sound of the CDs and the DVDs. Though, I guess the fact that it is made this way makes it for those with a special interest. Not the best thing to learn to like Nirvana with, but for someone who's been a fan for quite some time, it's great.

*cough* Now, what does the U.N. scientists being foreign (foreign to what, the U.S.?) have to do with anything. And are they really foreign? I'm quite sure you'll find a lot of Americans among those scientists. As for them being not well known, well, that's just ludicrus, they're among the top researchers in this field.

UNEP is a nice place to learn about the various environmental and economical advantages to battling global warming.
