Do people shout out requests for R.E.M. songs at rock concerts, eh? Nope, so that's why I'm voting Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd.

In an online quiz I once participated in (on IRC), the question "Who made "Burning Down The House?" appeared. I answered "Talking Heads", my oponent answered "Tom Jones and The Cardigans". He got the point, and eventually won the quiz.

I realize that it was only a silly quiz, and that if I should bear any grudges, it should be against the Quizmaster, but still, to this day, I dislike Talking Heads because of this incident.

Hiya, X-Grade! Long time, no see. How are things?

(Well, asking how things are is kinda stupid, since you tell us, but you know what I mean)

Well, I know the whisper you talk about, but it doesn't exactly last long, and I can't make out what they say. To me, it just kind adds a sinister mood ('tis, after all, a "sinister love song", as they say on the live-CD). Then again, I ain't exactly into Harry Potter, so I guess I wouldn't know Parseltongue.

Now, as you all may or may not know, I don't exactly live in a very populated place. My hometown, Halden, is a municipality consisting of some 27 000 inhabitants. Though small town life may have its perks, it definitely also has its downsides. This town has two small malls, in each mall is a record shop. Aside from these two record shops, there are no places to buy music in Halden. The shops, despite being from two rival music chains, look practically identical, and has pretty much the same selection in music. Each place consists of one rack titled Pop/Rock, one rack of Oldies, and one rack of Cheap CDs. I believe that's it, anyway. There's also a little section for alternative music, but the music there is about as alternative as something which isn't very alternative (basically, the alternative section is filled with nu-metal bands).

Now, I was in Bergen, the second largest town in Norway, on vacation a little while ago. While there, I visited a record shop, and I must say, I have seen the light. The place had an insane amount of CDs and Music-DVDs. Ash, Bush, Oasis, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Blur, Starsailor, stuff you'd never find anywhere near Halden. I even found Prata Vetra (Latvian band, name translates to Brain Storm in English) there (I didn't even know they sold their CDs in Norway). I stood there with a small wallet, but a big appetite for music. I could only afford two CDs, but I found at least 30 I wanted (and knew I couldn't get at home). I ended up buying Ash's Intergalactic Sonic 7"s and Bush's The Science Of Things.

Now, I know that you would tell me I could buy CDs online, and thus shouldn't whine. But since I currently have no Visa-card, I cannot pay for anything online, so that's not an option. Basically, I guess I just needed to rant a little about the horrible conditions in small-town Norway. I'm sure I'm not the only one, though, who lives in a place where good music is hard to come by. So I guess some of y'all can relate.

You keep putting up good against good.

Well, I'm a big fan of The Verve, but I'm also a big fan of Travis. I haven't heard much of Ashcroft's solo material, but I guess you have to count The Verve when deciding who to vote for. "The Drugs Don't Work" is a beautiful song, but "Driftwood" is equally beautiful.

I'm a huge Oasis-fan, and I know Ashcroft is a close and personal friend of Noel, but should I then vote Ashcroft because of that?

"Cast No Shadow" is a beautiful song, after all (cookie to anyone who knows what I'm talking about ).

Well, I guess, in the end, I'm a bigger fan of Travis than I am of The Verve/Ashcroft. Ashcroft's friendship with Oasis aside, I would have to vote Travis. It probably won't matter anyway, since I'm fairly sure Ashcroft's going to take this one anyway. Whoever wins is good, anyway.

Random people throw shit from cars at you?

I'm sorry, but the whole concept seems utterly absurd to me. Never heard of anything like it, and being a person who owns neither a bike, nor a driver's license, I walk a lot, as well, so if people were doing that around me, I would have experienced it.

All in all, this whole thing just seems weird. I understand your anger, though, if someone threw something at me, I'd be pissed off, as well.

Call me a sucker for the old times, but my favorite is Pikawil. I'm not 100% sure if he was ever banned, but he was the first and original Acmlm Lamer, anyway. I can still picture some of his signatures!

Actually, the two shops are both parts of two different chains, but not any of the big Norwegian chains. To get to any of them, I guess I'd have to go to this town Fredrikstad, which is only 30 minutes away, but I have no car, so

Actually, you know, 27 000 isn't small from a Norwegian point of view, either. Halden (where I'm living) is actually one of the 20 or 30 biggest "cities" (we call them cities, most people would call them towns) in the nation. Of course, we don't really have any big cities from an international point of view. Oslo is the largest with only half a million.
The reason this gives a small-town-feel, however, is twofold.
First of all, that's always what I hear people from the US, Germany, Japan etc. classify it as when I talk about it. They've always told me 27 000 is small town-ish, so I go by that.
Second of all, the town has a lot less shops than most other places of the same size. Halden lies 15 minutes from the border to Sweden. Right across the border is a huge shopping-area. Sales taxes in Sweden are far lower than Norway, and tons of Norwegians go to Sweden to buy their stuff. Since we are so close, many people here do their everyday shopping in Sweden, thus the market for shops in Halden is a lot smaller than in your normal 27 000 inhabitants-town. Again, though, I can't go to Sweden as I like, because I have no car.

I like some Third Wave Ska. Though, you have Ska-fans who would claim Third Wave ain't "real" Ska. Sublime, No Doubt, The Aquabats, those bands are pretty cool. I'm afraid I'm not very into the movement, though, so I don't know any of the lesser known bands.
