I'm new to this board. I've seen it before and I'm think that it has a lot to do with Mario games and rom hacking. Am I correct? Could you tell me a little more about this community?

I just recently opened up this site called Francois Press. It is a good resource for gamers and programmers but it is far from being mature. Yesterday I released this instant messenger that I think is cool. I want you to look at the site. I'm trying to build a small community. The site is growing at a very fast rate so it would be a good idea to return to it once in a while if you like it.

How is collision detection done in Super Mario World? This has always intrigued me. Is it tile-based or sprite-based. Perhaps I will get into Super Mario World because it could attract more tourists to my site. It also looks like fun.

That black fuzz in Super Mario World looks cool. It has those googly eyes. I won't mind having that as a pet but I'd probably be pissed when it sheds that black dust. What is that thing called anyways? What does it eat?

What would you concider tile based? Walls, blocks, ground, etc? I'm still confused.

From studying Super Mario Brothers 2 (Japanese) it seems to me that there are no worlds A - D. World 9 is where the princess is really being held captive? Right? I'm talking about the Japanese version. I remember from All Stars that Koopa fights you outside and the princess is there. Anyways, I suggest you get Super Mario Allstars to play those levels.

The little black bag of fuzz in Super Mario World with those googly eyes is not only ugly but frequently gives me nightmares. Last night I dreamt that there was a whole horde of them in my house and they were blackening the walls, my clothes, and the yard.

You know about the no music in map glitch too... Did you know that if you slide down the
island where we stands on and knock out one of his fireballs they turn into little red dinosaurs?

Technically races do not exist. Populations are too mixed to even be considered races. Racism should not even be an issue. I don't find that racist. It's funny.

Answering a question like that amounts to saying "Do you think Koopa exists?". That's how I look at the question. I think the bible is interpreted too literally and may be a collection of stories with a hidden meaning sort of like fables.

I doubt making any kind of hybrid with a human is even possible due to the genetic difference between humans and any other animal. It was once believed that chimpanzees shared 98.4% of our DNA but now studies suggest that they may only share 95% which makes more sense. Humans look very different from apes. So it may be impossible to make any hybrid.

There's usually a "box" of coordinates programmed to match each sprite's size (though in SMW's case, each box is probably 16x16, aside from special sprites like Rexes and Dino-Rhinos), and if one sprite's collision box enters another's, the game runs an appropriate routine (hurt Mario, flip sprite, power-up, etc.).

For a good example of collision detection boxes, play Vectorman for the Genesis and press ABACAB while paused. The little lights that appear indicate where collision detection will occur.

So it's tile based just like I thought. Wouldn' that have and effect on the graphics? Oh, but wait... graphics are stored as tiles anyways. I'm wondering if these collision detections take into account transparent areas. And why does Mario or any of the other characters always hit platforms, ground, pipes, or walls perfectly? Why is there not overlap of the 2 sprites when the collision detection occurs? What would be your approach to this?

I think it is pointless that they repeated the same game over again. How boring and unoriginal.

I've been playing Super Mario World and I have beaten it in the past. I'm wondering if there is a level in that island just to the north of Donut Plains and to the west of Vanilla Dome. Somebody told me that there was a level there. Is there? Is it true that if you beat Koopa 100+ times you can go to it?

Posted on 05-16-05 06:20 PM, in Mario's Movements Link
If mario is made up of 16x16 tiles when he moves it appears that he only moves one pixel at a time or more if he's running. He does not appear to move tile by tile. I need to know something about his tiles. If the scene is made of tiles then that means that they must be properly aligned in a matrix, right? So does Mario have like 16 different tiles depicting his movement through the matrix? I'm saying, are there tiles that depict the Mario Sprite progressively moving? Maybe I don't understand how Mario moves. Is it matrix-like movement or completely independent of a matrix? I'm really lost here. I need some good explanation.
