| I thought it was kinda dumb and labotomised myself, they could have gone a lot further and could have cast it a lot better. It was still a bit better than I expected, though. Predictable dialogue, terrible acting. Flashy sci-fi psycho-weirdness for mass-hollywood distribution... a good concept but not very well done. (edited by Arwon on 07-30-04 05:22 PM) |

| Talking Heads by a huge massive amount and not just because they're my favourite band. Intelligent, quirky, unique and original rock. David Byrne is amazing... They never really made a bad album and they even broke up at the right time (Which is more than one can say about tonnes of other bands). | |||

| The Aquabats are the only third-wave ska band I like or care to listen to. Not that they're particularly "ska" these days - they're continuing on their years-old quest to become Devo instead. Not that this is a bad thing. From AMG : "Ska marked the true beginning of Jamaican popular music, coming to prominence during the early and mid-'60s right around the time the island was granted its independence. Ska ensembles were generally a blend of electric instrumentation and horns most popular in jazz (saxophone, trumpet, trombone). Although structurally simple, ska has a bevy of influences, synthesizing American R&B, jump blues, Jamaican mento, calypso and other Caribbean styles, big-band swing, Afro-Cuban jazz, pocomania and other local religious folk music, and European ballroom dances. I guess the solution is to improve the bloody public transit systems and maybe find disincentives to the use of cars. Cars are already becoming more of a hassle due to fuel prices so that's taken care of. There's far deeper and more systematic issues at play that make the US such a driving-dependent and oil-using nation, than just mere selfishness and individualism. Though, those traits are probably partly what led to the situation that exists, with the layout of cities and the shriveling of public transportation. And come to think of it, I can't think of any explanation other than "selfishness and individualism" to account for all those appallingly enormous trucks and SUVs people drive. I mean, really... civilians driving HUMMERS!?!? Little known fact: Los Angeles' vast urban sprawl and far-flung suburbs owe something of their existance to a world class light-rail public transit system about a century ago. | I should've also mentioned when I said it was directed by Wes Anderson, that he was the director of 'Rushmore' and 'the Royal Tenenbaums' (that for me is reason enough to see this movie, actually). Incidentally, Owen Wilson, onscreen doofus that he is, co-wrote the Royal Tenenbaums. So he can't be anywhere near as dumb as he often appears. Still, onscreen I much prefer his brother, Luke. |

| Hmm. Tuneless arty new-wave drearyness and a suicidal sacred cow versus two brilliant pop-rock albums and a steady descent into ineffectualness and cranky insanity after that. There's a common thread because both bands had brilliant beginnings then slid into mediocrity - Weezer with their last two albums, Joy Division post-Curtis as New Order. I'll go with Weezer because I am not at all impressed with what I have heard of New Order, and I feel Joy Division gets away too lightly, with too much praise and acclaim, for the same reason Nirvana does. | Radiohead are under-rated? By who!?!? They're very good, and this is widely felt by many people. They have a huge fanbase. They get constantly fellated by critics. Every second British band wants to be them and so do bunches of others from elsewhere. Their albums sell plenty. Their shows are uber-expensive and still sell-out at the drop of a hat. | Mainly because it supports my convoluted attempt to find a line of commonality between them. New Order = the mediocrity after the brilliance just as Weezer's last two albums does. If that bothers you, just go with my second line of reasoning: "I feel Joy Division gets away too lightly, with too much praise and acclaim, for the same reason Nirvana does." ...and add as a conclusion to that, that I have noticed that Weezer is becoming "uncool" - seen as dorky and unfashionable... which is obscuring their two gem albums from a small amount of their deserved glory.
