Posted on 08-01-05 08:06 PM, in UNSW Foundation Day Pranks Link
It's Foundation Week at the Uni of New South Wales, celebrating our birthday, and apparently Newsouth's got quite a history of crazyass pranks. Each year the Student Guild offers a prize for the best prank (apparently judged according to "media coverage, public outcry and ministerial condemnation") and there's been some amazing ones, particularly from back in the 1960s when everyone had mad facial hair:

-In 1961, the Inaugural Foundation Day, the water-depth markers on a US Aircraft Carrier in Sydney Harbour were erased, a bathtub was paddled under the Harbour Bridge, and a skull-and-crossbones flag was raised over the ABC tower (ABC being our national govt-dunded broadcaster).

Then, in probably the best stunt ever pulled, a prominent TV personality named Brian Henderson was kidnapped live on air during an interview with some UNSW students for the show Bandstand (Music TV show, Australia pioneered the genre and MTV probably pinched the idea). Some burly students overpowered him and the security, then Hendo was taken and driven to a party in Terrigal... where he had such a ball he shouted everyone drinks and even bought breakfast in the morning.

-1962 saw a continuation of the "fucking with the US Navy" theme as some students snuck aboard and set off a chemical warfare alarm on a US battleship.

-In 1964 an alligator was liberated from the Taronga zoo and deposited in the pond/swamp thing that then existed on the NewSouth campus. Eventually the ransom was paid and it was returned. The following year some college kids snuck past airport security and ended up in Fiji, Singapore and the UK.

-Somewhat recently, a combination lock was placed on the gate entrance to Museum Station, a major city train station.

-In 1991 some students faked a UFO crash landing... they dug a two metre hole at a local beach, placed in the middle a gas cylinder and some heat beads so it glowed orange and hissed, then called the cops and said they saw something fall from the sky then a loud flash. Another prank that year saw the mailing of fake census forms, some of which were returned despite questions like "does the household own a cat?" and "what colour is it?"

-The following year some engineering students set up a giant porn movie screening in George Street (major street in the city centre). It was 3 storeys high and lasted for 90 minutes before the cops managed to get to where it was being projected across the road.

-In 2000ish a large Gnomehenge was constructed with hundreds of gardne gnomes in Martin Place, another busy area of the city centre.

-A couple of recent pranks have relied on the notoriety of the early August Foundation week among cops. I quote a website here (background: Ken Park is a film depicting underage sex that is banned in Australia):

In 2003 the following stunt was pulled on the Uni of Sydney (our crosstown rivals, they've got the prestige but we're awesomer): "Faxes were sent out to all newspaper and radio media organisations in Sydney, plus the Reverend Fred Nile and the Newtown area command group, making a complaint against the "planned screening" of Ken Park in the Manning Bar at the Uni of Sydney on Wednesday night. Fred Nile decided he definitely agreed and proceeded to contact the NSW Police Commisioner personally to ensure the "screening" did not take place. Police turned up, noticing the signs saying "ONE HOUR PHOTO will be shown tonight. KEN PARK will NOT be shown", but still attempted to arrest most of the staff at Manning Bar."

-And this one, which is verified as far as I am concerned, but apparently is also an urban legend. Perhaps UNSW is the origin of this:

There was some kind of work happening on Parramatta Rd for the day, so, the students rang the contracters in charge of it, saying "A bunch of students dressed up as Police Officers are coming; dont be fooled!"

Then, they proceeded to ring the police, and told them "A bunch of students are dressed up as workmen and are working on Parramatta Rd; dont be fooled."

Genius.

I feel an urge to work my way into this distinguished group, but it's too late for this year. I also think you need a club or something... maybe the debate society can be pursuaded. Though a society/club with more Engineering students could be better.

For now, I'll just say that my to-do list includes investigating the feasibility of getting 20 or 30 people, plus appropriate supplies, into one of the major sporting stadiums near here, undetected and unharassed.

General Madine:

You're right, I've got the wrong show. It's Countdown I'm thinking of, which pioneered the music video television concept in like the 70s or something. They weren't the only ones, but due to the rarity of international visits and the tiny budget they relied heavily on music video and it's pretty arguable that the format of the show became a precursor to MTV.

My bad. Bandstand was just Bandstand.

Cymoro:

To be eligible for the prize for best stunt, you need to register it with the Guild. Usually one of the colleges (dorms, basically) or one of the larger clubs/societies wins. It's too late this year but I definitely wanna get involved next year, hence my last paragraph in the first post.

Trapster: The cops showed up, but the prank also involved locking the elevator and stairs in the building where the film was set up, so it took ages to get up there.

My friends are great when it comes to racist jokes, because, well, we tell them svery often.

Thing is, our group consists of someone who's Asian, Asian/Spanish, black, Irish/Polish background (That'd be me), and Jewish background (me again, though my great-grandfather converted when he was young). We don't take offense because we find them funny. The best way to deal with any situation is humor, and making light of it is an ideal that we follow. Watch Carlos Mencia's comedy acts, and you'll understand. Now, physical hate crimes are understandably bad.

Denying someone a job because they're black or what have you is bad. However, if someone drives by, and screams out the window "NIGGA", shrug it off and move on with our life. If your close friend says it to you, punch him in the shoulder. It'll be understood that you saying it was not meant to be offensive, but you're still an ass for saying it. :D

Racist jokes can still be funny in a room full of whiteys, as long as you all know the score. It's all context.

IT'S AN INTERACTIVE "CONTROL SEAN'S LIFE" POST.

I am going to purchase one of the fine hi-definition posters from the A Lesson Is Learned But The Damage Is Irreversible webcomic. Problem is, there's too many brilliant comics in their archive. I think you can see where this is going.

I've narrowed it down to:

I'M SORRY

LOW-G MAN RELIES ON HIS MOONROCK

TROUBLE WITH POWER PYRAMIDS

AT LAST, I AM IN HEAVEN!

10,000 FREE MEN AND THEIR FAMILIES

CHRISTMAS DISASTER SPECIAL

ANOTHER DAY

I CAME ABOUT THE JOB

SO HELP ME CHOOSE

Editted to add that I've whittled it down to four.

Logically, I can't see how an omnipotent being who knows all and sees all can possibly draw an arbitrary line down the middle of humanity and say these people are good enough to be saved or not saved. What about borderline cases? Would there be a quota system?

From a perspective that high, we must all be pretty much the same, and I'd think that logically either everyone is saved or no-one is.

Well, you know, the rules against double negtives aren't universal. In Spanish they're practically mandatory and are complementary to each other, not read as contradicting each other...

The Japanese had already tried to surrender on the condition that the Emperor be retained. The Allies wanted unconditional surrender. The bombings were not militarily necessary, and the defence of "they hit me first" is the only defence... it's a flimsy one. There were other options.

Language is dynamic and organic, and it's about effective communication within a given context, not hard and fast rules of "grammar".

If using slang, clipped syntax, sloppy pronunciation and (OMFG!) even daring to split infinitives is effective communication in the context you're presently communicating in, then it's perfectly okay. You're achieving effective communication in that context.

Posted on 08-15-05 12:30 PM, in Schwarzenegger for president? Link
There's two issues here.

The first is whether it's right to exclude all overseas-born people from the highest office in the land. As someone intent on infiltrating and dominating America (shhh) I personally think it's pretty wrong. One of those outdated quirks in that Document you all rate so highly I suppose. It was probably originally designed to keep British subversion at bay.

But he can always be Vice President can't he? God, wouldn't the hardline Republicans shit themselves over a McCain-Schwarzenegger ticket?

-----

Second is the arguments over Arnie's record as governor. I'm sure he hasn't done much, but I also know that California's problems are extremely difficult to solve.

The main problem is that it has a 8 billion dollar budget shortfall out of its 100 billion dollar budget. This is, basically, because in 2001 the stock market crashed and CA lost 11 billion dollars in capital gains and stock options revenue. The budget hole was really no-one's making except the markets... obviously it's not great to have your fiscal outcomes dependedent on the vagaries of the stock-market, but that's neither Schwarzenegger's nor Davis' fault.

What's more, the shortfall is difficult to make up, because there's no political to introduce new taxation or raise existing ones (I understand there's some people who want property taxes to push up revenues.... but then there's the possible impending housing market fall so maybe that isn't a great idea either) and people don't want to lose their social services, Cali's excellent public tertiary system and Medi-Cal and so forth. If there's no political will to either raise revenues or sufficiently cut spending... then not much can be fixed, eh?

-------

Finally, on Reagan. I'd heavily heavily dispute that he was a good president. I especially take umbrige at the REAGAN WON THE COLD WAR idea, the childish delusion that one man on the other side of the world had such godlike power that he brought down the Soviet system (as opposed to, say, Gorbachev's foreign policy shift that had its genesis in the Krushchev years, the efforts of Solidarnosc and similar groups, the untenably shabby state of the eastern bloc economies as compared to previous decades - especially relative to the west).

But I would also argue that the key difference between Reagan and Schwarzenegger, two actor-come-politicians, is that Reagan never ran on his Hollywood persona. Sure, he drew on his celebrity and his skills as an actor, however slight... but he never ran AS Reagan the Actor in the same way that Arnie's political persona is inseparable from his Hollywood persona. HE IS ARNIE and there's no differentiating between politican and actor.

Also, Arnie ain't senile.

This brings me in a roundabout way to why Arnold Schwarzenegger should not try to run for president. As stated, the man trades on his celebrity and his larger than life persona - he accomplishes little but anyone in the same position would be just as hamstrung. He's the victory of image and style over substance. In some ways, he's the perfect Californian political phenomenon... in some insane way, it makes sense for the man to be Governor of California, a state obsessed with celebrity and infused with an air of unreality. But translate this into the larger, more vicious arena of federal politics, and he'd be lost and ridiculous. Sure, federal politics trades in style, image and unreality too... but it's a different, crueller variety.

What's more, his moderate Californian brand of Republicanism does not, will not, play well in the middle or the bottom rigght-hand bit... and the federal Republican machine, the same one that managed to get Bush in ahead of McCain, will never accept a pro-abortion pro-stem-cell-research Republican-lite who believes in climate change to the extent of driving hybrid cars... and is married to a Kennedy.
