I do, thought a lot less than I used to. I also used to get peeved at improper usage of the word 'random', but I'm also getting desensitized to that, too.

I'm not really a grammar nazi, despite my own occasional claims to the contrary, so long as what someone's typing or saying is understandable.

But I get plenty of correction opportunities where I live... I've actually heard people using triple negatives in a sentence.

Well, you know, the rules against double negtives aren't universal. In Spanish they're practically mandatory and are complementary to each other, not read as contradicting each other...

Well that's why you learn English. It's okay to make mistakes with the language, like when to use negatives, but if you're on a message board you should try your best not to make mistakes. If you do and people correct it, don't take it personally.

If everyone talked like a language arts teacher, without grammer errors and sentence slurs, the world would be a terribly boring place. If you are talking about writing, then I think that everyone should try their best to spell things correctly if it is an assignment. Slang and internet talk is cool for instant messaging, but sometimes I occasionally run into someone who uses way to many LOLZ! and BRBS!, which makes it an unpleasent person to instant message with.

It's weird because I do know enough grammar to speak right but even some that I do know I don't use like what was mentioned before "Me and my friend" like that just the right way to say it doesn't sound right because everyone uses the wrong one most of the time. I don't have people correcting me but in school of course the English teacher would correct people.

Hmm, now that I think of it I haven't ever really spoken to one. I think I was just meaning grammar obsessive people.

I've spoken to a linguist, he tried to agrue with me that Welsh isn't actually a proper language, it's just a different dialect of P type Celtish apparently.

I've been told I have a pretty "posh" voice with good diction, sort of like those you get in old British Children's TV programmes

However, as I've lived up here for 8 years, I'm geting a slight scouse twang to it (and say "like" sometimes at the end of sentences), as well as the Welsh part

The Cruel Justice says...
Ese (essay)
-n. Slang for an inferior white man or a newbie. Can also replace dude or man.
In Spanish, "ese" means "that".

Sarcastically, it can be insulting, but it is also used among friends in the way that we say "buddy" or "pal" in English. This has been Slay's Nitpick of the Day; all apologies.

English is a language and as such adheres to rules so that it can be spoken and used to communicate well. When one is not adhering to those rules, it means that he is not speaking correctly. That's an amazing concept, isn't it?

I tend to speak correctly and I wish others would do the same. I disagree that "the world would be a terribly boring place" (as was said by Snika) if everyone spoke correctly; rather, it would be easier to understand people (and since when does the misuse of a language make things more interesting? At best, it can only make something so stupid that it's funny, as is the case with nonsensical translations for subtitles). It's not as if it's very difficult to follow the rules of the English language, for the most part. Although nobody is perfect, myself included, anyone who actually tries to speak correctly will eventually do so fairly well and effortlessly. It's not a matter of using slang words that make things easier to say; gonna and wanna, for example, speed up speech and lessen the amount of effort expended. My problem lies with people using words incorrectly and being unable to use proper syntax. If someone's unwilling enough to at least try to speak correctly, then I don't see a reason to put forth the effort to listen to what that person has to say.

So yes, I'm sure I'll be branded a grammar nazi for this post, but I really couldn't care less. It's not difficult to speak fairly correctly, and speaking poorly can really rub many people the wrong way (although the majority of the people in this thread seem to speak the language well enough, which is a definite good thing). I find it especially appalling to see so many people who speak English as a second language and yet do so better than many who speak only English. What is wrong with this picture? It's truly terrible, in my opinion.

Oh, and if you couldn't tell (who knows ), I'm back from my trip.

Language is dynamic and organic, and it's about effective communication within a given context, not hard and fast rules of "grammar".

If using slang, clipped syntax, sloppy pronunciation and (OMFG!) even daring to split infinitives is effective communication in the context you're presently communicating in, then it's perfectly okay. You're achieving effective communication in that context.
