Well, I've been trying to edit Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for the GBA, but I can't make a table file. The text just isn't stored in the same way as other games. I've looked and seen that the alphabet is in order (and without spaces), so relative searching should work (and so as to keep you all from saying that I'm just not doing it right, I have searched, with multiple programs, all lowercase letter-only strings), but found nothing.

So that leads me to the conclusion that the text is compressed. If anyone happens to know of how it works, please tell. If anyone can share any known text compressions, that would also be great. Even giving me the offset of one instance of text would help me greatly.

Thanks,
Kei-kun

Well, it's impossible to relative search for text that uses two bytes a letter, even if radicals were to be used (which I have tried [with like a radical in between of before letters]); so I guess this thing is just compressed. I've also run into such a problem in games like Golden Sun.

I guess I'll just keep looking/asking around about text compressions and for offsets for some text. If all fails, I guess I'll just have to move on to a different game.

By the way, why isn't the post count showing in the side bar? Not that I care, but it looks weird seeing an empty field there.

Hm... might it possibly be that there are bytes used that represent a whole combination of letters? Kind of like the word "discrimination" might end up like "dis-cri-mi-na-tion," kind of like how Chrono Trigger has "allowance" as "all-ow-an-ce?"

If it was something like that, how would I find it without blindly changing bytes and hoping it's text that I'll notice when testing the game so that I can make a table file?

JJ, I guess that's the only way, huh? Well then, I guess if it is, I'll have to replay the game and be on a lookout for a really weird word. Wait, that's impossible. Damn, it'll take something without vowels for that to work. Maybe even then, they could have an entry for repeating letters like "mm" or "hh."

Oh, that would be great, Labmaster. The only reason why I mentioned Golden Sun at all though is because I was also thinking of editing that game if I couldn't edit FFT (but that was before I ran into the same problem). Truthfully, though... after playing Golden Sun for a while, I kind of think that'd be a more fun game to edit.

Edit: I lied. It'd be more fun to get all the data I can, lol. When was the last time I've ever completed a hack? I usually just write documents. However, text is the most basic thing in a game; and I can't do much without knowing how it works.

Coudln't find the enemy name in memory. I need something that will allow me to search the memory and not just view it (one of those times where I wish I had the developer version of No$Gba). Just curious, though. What were you doing to figure out that what you traced back to was something that told the game where to go?

He's Jackie 'cause he rips stuff. Oh damn, I just screwed up the inside joke. XD

Anyway Centerity, how old are you really? Everywhere I look, you have a different age entered in the age field! I originally thought you were about 12 or something, but you haven't changed at all! What the hell is up with that?

And DUDE, aren't you getting a little too old for PoK

Tested it and it works correctly. Congratulations, I guess. However, it's nothing that great. Pointer calculators are usually the first rom editing related programs that programmers attempt to create. Surprisingly, mine was a text editor. o.O But that wasn't much more complicated than making a pointer calculator, so nothing great there also. ;P

Lmao, I thought you were just making fun of Shiny with that name.

Anyway, your edit is a little pointless, in my opinion. I think the old style of the menu was pretty much optimized and that changing it would just make it look worse. I mean, ugh... you put the name on the same line as "Continue." Those two different colors don't look great on the same line.

About the only thing I can think of that would be interesting in the continue box is adding something to it. Who knows, maybe like a step counter or what city the player is currently in.

Well, that's just what I think. Maybe someone else might find it useful.

Hm. It makes sense how it would work. The hardest sounding part would be to find a way for users to connect to each other easily.

HH, you're right about the lag. I just thought of exactly the same scenario the night I posted that. One way would be to have a sort of plugin that would display users' ping at the bottom of the screen, but it'll just be up to people whether or not they attack the lagger. ;P It's probably best that non-laggers play.

You guys mentioned the random data, but didn't he mention something about streaming data from RAM? As long as one system is set to be "the master," it should work fine, shouldn't it? This is also how a lagger can keep up in the game when he stops lagging so badly.

Now I see another thing... they're going to have to make their little program different for every game, unless maybe they stream all of RAM at once... not sure how fast that would be. Might require a very good upload speed. ;P

Yeah, I remembered Meowth's program gave me problems when I first tried it out. It was so long ago... I think the solution was adding a block to the beginning and end of the image so that it would insert correctly...

Just because I've been bored lately waiting for my motherboard to be RMA'd, I decided to mess with some roms. Seeing as this computer is unable to run GBA emulators, I'm forced to edit GBC games.

What I've been trying to do today is to have the maps link. I've been trying to get New Bark Town to link with Cherrygrove just for testing, but I can't seem to do it (though I believe I am not that far off). So far these are my findings:

[Bank] [Tileset] [???] [Two Byte Pointer to Map Header] [???] [Music Track]
NewBark Town (94CCD): 25 01 01 11 4E 01 3C

[Map Border] [Map Dimensions (Y,X) 2 Bytes] [Three Byte Pointer to Tiles]
New Bark Town (94E11): 05 09 0A 2B B5 4D

Now, the map header is where I know it lies, but I just can't seem to figure it out. After the above, comes:

00 40 66 43 03 18 03 F0 52 30 C7

Now I think the first 03 is the number of attached maps plus 1 because a lower value will cause attached maps to no longer be attached and a higher number will just crash the game.

I know 18 is the map bank and 03 is the map. 18 03 is Route 29. I had that changed to 1A 03, which is Cherrygrove.

The rest is a mystery to me, though at one point I thought I knew what some of it was. I believe it has something to do with the positioning of the map. So if any of you could help me out, it would be great. =/ *cough* HH, I bet you know.

Edit: By the way, any of you know how to repoint the events? New Bark's events begins at 0x120368, but there are no pointers to that!
Edit2: It would also be nice if anyone knows what my question mark values are.

I think I wrote something about types under the name of Zidane when Puddus Maykia was just destroying Ruby/Sapphire. It may or may not have explained how to add a type (seeing as pretty much everything I wrote included ways to add what was being edited XD). When my new motherboard comes in (the computers around here apart from mine don't have the resources to run GBA roms), I can re-explore types after figuring out Gold/Silver's map linking data.

Some of the graphics are a little rough upon startup. You changed Hiro's picture at the beginning of the game, but either you haven't gotten around to it or you forgot to edit his graphic in the menu. The graphics are rather interesting. I like the big tree and sign graphics.

Events could be cleaned up a little. Some of the signposts had been poorly placed, such as the sign for Elm's house being next to Hiro's and the trash can signpost in the lab lying around on the floor. Perhaps you were going to use those later on, but if not, you should just cut out the events. Also, there are two people saying the same line.

When I downloaded the patch, I was hoping you were going to take advantage of linking the maps, seeing as you already wrote a document on it. I'm so close, I just need more examples. Seeing someone else's edit of New Bark's link data would've helped me immensely.

Tileset data could use a little editing... It's just kind of weird to not be allowed to walk by the corner's of the house that appear to be ground.

Well, it looks interesting so far. I like some of the graphics changes you made. I hope to see more.

Finally got to use this computer again (still using my brother's - damn you EPoX); and it took me about ten minutes to figure out how to repoint the events, so I'm feeling like a badass.

Played around with some numbers and discovered that the events began two bytes before I thought they did:

[Useless 00 00] [Number of Warps] [Coordinates of Warp (Y,X) 2 Bytes*] [Which Warp to Warp to**] [Map Bank of Map to Warp to] [Map to Warp to]

New Bark Town (120368): 00 00 04 03 06 01 18 05 05 0D 01 18 06 0B 03 01 18 08 0D 0B 01 18 09

*Event tiles are 1/4 map tiles, so I believe it is pretty much impossible to have events further than 127 tiles from start (mad assembly programmers don't start on about how you can expand that field. )
**Number of warp is determined by when its data appears. In other words, it's impossible to use normal warp data to warp to an area without a warp.

There is some data that comes between the warps and signposts, but I'm not really sure what it is:

New Bark Town (12037D): 02 00 08 01 00 16 40 00 00 00 09 01 00 41 40 00 00

I don't seem to get a change when editing it. I thought it was headbutt data at first, but you don't have level 00 PoK
