Great hack. God-awful music, unfortunately, but I guessI can't really complain since it's such a pain to hack.

Yeah, you have to time it so you bounce off the shyguy and grab onto the second ladder at the same time, if I'm remembering the level correctly.

Verrrry interesting.

Will Toad be player two, an alternate option for player one, or some weird combination of the two, like Toad only being playable in certain levels?

When I first heard about "ROM hacking," I thought SMB2 Christmas Edition was one of the cooler ones -- mostly because it had animated backgrounds that actaully worked really well, but also because it was completely themed, unlike most of the other output from around those times, which -- from what I could tell -- consisted mostly of SMB1 hacks with slightly altered Mario graphics and no other changes whatsoever.

Well, if no one else is going to reply, I will!

I liked this a lot. It just goes to show, any idea that's well-conceived and executed can be a fun hack. You don't need all sorts of weird ASM tricks or -- in this case -- even level alterations, as long as it's a significant enough change.

Anyway, this was really good. The ending was funny, too... keep up the good work, let us know what your next projects will be!

What are you talking about?!

The KKK Bros. trilogy is a masterpiece... a legacy of hacking that no one can ever live up to.

Looks great.

The pallete and the jump physics were my biggest problems with this game. And if I even had the slightest idea where to begin fixing the jumping, well... it might just be a fun (or at least playable) game! In the novelty of it all.

This may have been brought up before -- but I can't tell, because, well, I can't search the forum to find out.

As far as I can tell, there's no way to search for old text strings or even thread titles, which makes finding older topics a little bit tricky, especially in forums like ROM Hacking where there are 20+ pages of 50 or so threads.

It's probably a bitch to program, but is it possible? Or is it actually a feature on here somewhere and I keep missing it somehow?!

The only other option I've tried is google searching the forums, but that obviously doesn't work since the word "mario" only comes up with six results.

So. What it is, homeslice?

Edit: Son of a bitch! This was supposed to go in "suggestions," not ROM hacking. I came back to the hack forum to make a quick check before I posted and obviously didn't click "back" enough to go to the right forum. Could an admin movie it, please? Thanks.

I did, that's what I meant by the "mario" comment. I searched http://board.acmlm.org/forum.php?id=9 (to specifically cite only threads in the ROM hacking forum) and it only came up with five results.

I searched simply board.acmlm.org with the text "mario" as well and there are still only three pages (granted, it does claim there are 4,750 results, but clicking on "similar pages" on any of the links only brings up a Google error page). A little suspicious for a board that contains emulation and ROM hacking forums, not to mention an entire forum itself with the word "Mario" in the title.

Heh, yes, sorry about that. I tacked a little note on to the end of my post when I noticed it, but I guess there haven't been any admins in the forum yet to fix it.

Yes. I'd think, if anything, it would be the new folk that should be using a search feature, so they know what's been discussed and what hasn't and don't start new threads about topics that've already been done to death or info. or resources that are already out there.

They started selling them on DVD a whiel ago. I think there are two or three compilations out. I got one of them for $10 at a drugstore, but they sell them online too.

Also, the Super Mario Brothers Super Show is available on http://www.yahooligans.com/ , but that's not quite what you're looking for...

Posted on 04-27-05 01:58 AM, in ???SMB3 Bonus Game Hack??? Link
I accidentally accessed one of these one time when I was just doing a standard level hack of SMB3.

I hit a hammer brother on one particular tile, and instead of going to the hammer bros. level, it sent me to a weird bonus game. The graphics were glitched, so I don't know what it was supposed to be, but it looked like a regular spade house, except underneath toad there was an alternating graphic (kind of like the end-of-level star/flower/mushroom card). I pressed B, three glitched graphics flew up and out from the center of the screen, and the game ended.

Never was able to recreate that...

I've a question:

I was hacking Bowser's Castle, and everything was perfect, until... when you finally defear Bowser, the timer runs out, like normal, but when it hits zero you get "Time Up" and die. What's did I move/change that does this? Does Bowser have to be in a particular location or something?

One other question: Does anyone have the offset for the data that determines how many coins are necessary in order to get an N-Spade bonus?

Thanks.

Posted on 05-17-05 06:23 AM, in [Mini-Hack] Super Mario Bros. in the Mystery of the Flying Fish Link
Well, my first (soon-to-be) publically released hack (or second, if you discount a fiasco from about two years ago -- but for the love of God, let's forget about that) is of SMB3 and is titled "The Super Mario Bros. in the Mystery of the Flying Fish."

I'm calling this a "mini-hack" because there is only going to be one world. Quite frankly, I lose interest in PLAYING most hacks after around one world, much less MAKING them. Plus the theme of the hack is good for about a world, but would definitely run thin quickly if it went on for two worlds or more, so I figured this was the best route.

Unfortunately, I'm waiting for someone (anyone!) to respond to my question in the SMB3 thread, and the question is kind of important -- as such, I can't really release it quite yet, since it's literally unbeatable until I figure out what I did.

There are a few other bugs I hope I can work out as well, and -- unfortunately -- the ending is, as far as I can see, going to remain relatively unchanged, since know nothing about ASM and imagine that overhauling the ending sequence to fit with it is going to require some kind of assembly manipulation.

Anyway, down to the interesting bits:

While Mario is romping through the Mushroom Kingdom's royal water fountains one day, he is witness to a mysterious phenomenon: the fish from around the kingdom begin to take flight! It's up to the Mario Brothers to find out what is responsible (I wonder...) and stop it before the local fish markets are all dried up!

So anyway, that's the loosest story I could come up with that incorporated the theme of the hack. In all honesty? I came up with the theme and title (which I thought was pretty damned funny) and eventually BSed a story out of it! But that's not important -- its' a fun hack, regardless!

I would rate this as pretty damned challenging; even I found myself swearing at my computer more than once playing through it. But it's not impossible, and it never gets so frustrating that it's not fun anymore.

As you may have guessed, every level features fish, and -- because there just weren't enough in the original SMB3 -- they all auto-scroll.

But anyway, this is getting waaay to frigging long-winded, so I'll just wrap it up with a bunch of screen shots and a plea: anyone who thinks it looks remotely interesting or fun help me figure out how to fix it so it can finally be released!

Thanks,

PSlugworth

Thanks for all the positive comments, guys.

But as for going directly to the letter from the princess after the first level, well... it's a really good idea, but I wouldn't even know where to begin doing that! It would take a lot of ASM, I'd assume, and again, I don't even have the faintest idea of how to manipulate anything ASM related. I understand the concept of it, but the only languages I can decipher (and even then, only half the time) are HTML and BASIC -- you know, the cowardly stuff.
