Yay for soy milk! Maybe I'm weird, but I adore soy milk so much more than cow's milk. The only way you can possibly get me to drink cow's milk is if it's chocolate...which is my last resort now that I'm in a lovely college dorm. No fridge=no soy milk funness =/

My piece of advice...take a break. It sounds like you're at a breaking point and could use some good ole relaxation. While you should go to class and do the required b/s and whatnot, I mean you don't want to fail, but afterwards let yourself loose. If you have another one of ~those~ days, do what's required of you and nothing more. Go to class, try to pay attention, go home, and chill. Don't do homework unless it's absolutely necessary, don't be around people who stress you out, just take a nap or something. You'll wake up feeling much better and ready to tackle whatever's coming at you. So sorry to hear about your sucky day, I've been there a couple of times myself. Just always remember, you do deserve a break sometimes. Life is meant to be enjoyed, not strained through.

Maybe I just went to a weird school, but none of my teachers cared if students were sleeping. Their theory was if you want to fail, go right ahead.

I don't know how I've managed it, but I haven't fallen asleep yet. It's almost happened many many times, for some reason always in my 11am Logic class...don't ask me why.

Well, I had started out going Political Science, pre-law and all that fun stuff...but then I realized I missed the maths and sciences way too much. So I'm switching majors this semester, and going Neuroscience. I don't know if I'm going to go Med school, or just take it up through Masters and PhD, but whatever I end up doing I'd like to lean towards behavioral science I think. I would major in math, teach calculus or something...but our country screws that profession so meh.

Hey all,
So I read the New York Times fairly religiously, and this particular Op-Ed piece caught my attention. Granted, it is an Opinion-Editorial, but I would be very interested to hear a few other takes on it. Do you think we should give in to their demands, or maintain a firm stance? The article may be long, but it's worth reading. Thanks a bunch.

"The Kidnap Weapon" 27 Sept. 2004
by William Safire

The Zarqawi terrorist network in Iraq has developed a powerful new weapon. It requires no munitions and no suicide zealots, runs no risk to terrorists of death or capture and provides cash to finance other operations.

The weapon is publicized kidnapping. Pictures of helpless captives begging for their lives trigger worldwide coverage of tearful families begging for mercy. Films sometimes conclude with a sadistic Zarqawi slowly sawing off the heads of his victims.

For the psychological warriors, it is a win-win tactic. If the ransom is paid by a private contractor, the extorted cash buys rockets and mortars. If the ransom is paid b a government withdrawing its troops, the terrorist diplomatic victory dispirits the rest of the coalition. If the ransom is not paid, then the film of the hostages' beheading strikes fear into the heart of the morbidly fascinated viewer.

The kidnap weapon does not always produce the propaganda reults the killers want. John Burns of The Times noted from Baghdad on PBS's "News Hour" that the grisly murders fill civilized Iraqis with a deep disgust. They remind many of the hand-chopping and tongue-cutting methods used by Saddam's goons to suppress resistance.

But this also frightens many Iraqis, and manipulates the media to intimidate millions abroad whose support is needed to defeat the terrorists.

Nobody should order reporters and editors to "downplay" a gut-wrenching human interest story involving cruelty, violence and death. Nor should the media flinch from covering casualty counts or honoring the fallen. War involves sacrifice.

But responsible journalists should consider the wisdom of allowing media-savvy terrorists to play them like a violin.

Sensationalism sells; on TV, "if it bleeds, it leads." Audiences are surely drawn to tearful interviews with worried spouses and children. Bloggers get "hits" from posting the most gruesome pictures. Cable ratings rise by milking the pathos in the drama created by the Zarqawi network; first comes the kidnapping report; then televised please from the kneeling, doomed innocents; then coverage of marches and vigils to plead for the payment of ransom; finally, in one case out of four, the delivery of dismembered bodies and gleeful claim of blame.

Do we have to become conduits for this gisly, real-death kidnap choreography? We are obliged to report it, but we need not go along with the terrorist propagandists in milking the most horror out of it.

We know that the primary purpose of the kidnap weapon is to drive the coalition forces out of Iraq and to prevent a free election there.

We know, too, that the kidnap weapon is aimed at the U.S. election. What we do not know is how its heavily publicized use will cut. Will Americans react to all-kidnap-all-the-time by being revolted at the savagery and turn to the candidate determined to wipe out the barbarians? Or will we be so revolted as to think Iraqis are hopelessly uncivilized or beaten down, and turn to the candidate whoe will get us out of there the fastest?

John Kerry, who has evidently decided to replace Howard Dean as the antiwar candidate, last weekend helped to magnify the terrorists' kidnap weapon. In a scheduled commercial Kerry personally approved, just before charging that George Bush had no plan to get us out of Iraq, the Democratic campaign underscored the message Zarqawi has ben sending: "Americans," said Kerry's announcer, "are being kidnapped, held hostage, and even beheaded."

Though undoubtedly accurate, that paid evocation of horror by a political candidate is a terrible blunder. That's the sort of emotional appeal you would expect from President Gloria Arroyo of the Philippines who pulled 51 troops out of Iraq, caving to the demand of kidnappers, emboldening them to grab fresh victims.

It's bad enough for some thoughtless media outlets to become an echo chamber for scare propaganda; it's worse when the nominee of a major party approves its use to press his antiwar candidacy.

We are dealing with the most brutal propaganda weapon yet devised. Strong governments counter it by refusing to pay money or policy ransom to the kidnap-killers. Nonpartisan media's response should be to report the events conscious of manipulation and not to overlook the reaction of Iraqi and worldwide Muslim disgust.

Well, being sick sucks, I have to say. I have mono right now =/ and it is no fun at all. Especially when mixed in with extreme dehydration and allergies and asthma. I'm just a sicky all around, but I'm used to it! It's sad though, to keep me up and running, it takes almost an entire pharmacy.

Glad to hear you're feeling a little bit better! Take good care of yourself and I hope you feel 100% soon.

Thank you guys so much for actually reading the article. I had a feeling it would turn people off because it is so long, but I really feel like issues such as this should be brought up.

I agree with you both personally, and I think we are obligated to remain firm in our stance. We negotiated the release of a terrorist once before, only to have that same person turn around and assist with 9-11. While poeple may die, I suppose it's better one than many =/ as harsh as that may sound.

I'm fairly new to the boards so I'm not entirely sure of who or where I should go to offer an opinion, but I had a slight idea. I recently (as in this morning) posted an article I found in a newspaper, and I thought maybe it would be nice to have a forum for International Events, or World Affairs, or something like that. A place where we can discuss more serious matters without having inappropriate comments made. Just a thought. If I need to take this elsewhere, please let me know! Thanks =D

I completely agree. As long as people keep it respectful, it should be fine. I mean, the same kind of things can happen in any thread. I'd just like to be able to post articles and whatnot, and have an intelligent conversation about it and have it read seriously rather than ignored and passed over because it's "too long," know what I mean? Anyway, I'm glad at least one person does agree with me, and maybe, just maybe, we can have someone pay attention. All I need is a name....

I'm not really afraid of needles either. I had 7 years of allergy shots (basically shots twice a week) so it kinda curbed it. What y'all should try is a spinal tap, which is ~not~ fun, especially when they botch it, or an allergy skin test which I have to do soon. It's 40 little pricks of a needle on your back, it sucks =/ but yeah, needles in general don't really bother me.

Well, seeing as I lived in Europe for nine years, and I'm now living back in the good ole US, I'd have to go with Australia. I really don't have much interest in seeing Japan, though I wouldn't mind going...just not on the top of my "Things to do" list. I've been to tons of places though, the entire United Kingdom including Ireland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, several states...yeah military life roxs my soxs.

Wow, thank you guys so much for actually listening up and helping out with this! I haven't been able to get on and post much lately with the extreme amount of work in school, so I kinda let things slip for a while. Midterms, ya know.

Anyway, I can't wait to hear about what all happens and to see the final results! I guess there's a thread in General now? Better go find it. Thanks again guys, y'all are awesome =D

Mucho love,
LD

Okay "BUSH IS DUM" is exactly what we don't want. Especially for the minority of us Republicans =P

Anyway, I'm horrible at coming up with names, but the best I've heard so far is the Debate Forum. Then again, it could be discussion. I want to again emphasize the idea of this forum. It is not for only politics. It is for current events, whether nature, business, weather, foreign affairs, politics, science, religion...anything and everything of a more serious nature. What our goal is, is to have a forum where we can talk intelligently about a subject without getting idiotic and pointless responses that do nothing but waste time. It's also to ensure that posts are read that actually have merit, and read by those who will appreciate them.

With that in mind, how about we refocus the naming game, and try for something a little more incorporating.

That could be a great way to go. It really applies to the idea that it's more indepth and intellectual than just spewing off threads for random reasons. And putting in News and Current Events is a descrtiption in and of itself. My vote is for something like that.

I definitely agree with that! With the multi-cultural population of the forum, it would be a blast for people from other countries to share their own news. I mean, how many chances do we get to learn about all the issues going on around the world, not only the ones in our own particular country. I really hope this works out! *crosses fingers*

The Tank...I like that idea! Catchy and applicable. I really don't want to limit it to politics, or give people the impression that the forum will only be about politics, so I think that works great.

I just think something unique is what we're going for, and there are tons of good ideas. I dunno, I wish I had something creative to add, but I really don't. I was never much good with names....Plus, thanks to my rhetoric and honors courses, I think way too complexly and no one would even understand my suggestions. i.e. Commonplace, or Stasis Theory. If any of y'all have any idea what those are, kudos to you and I'd love to chat. Anyway, yeah, that's all.

"I own a timber company? Well that's news to me. Anyone want some wood?"

Amusing, oh so amusing.

Question for you Kerryites out there. When he said, "I will put 40,000 new men into the military without use of the draft," how exactly does he plan to do that? Curious if maybe I missed it or something. To me, if you have an exact number of men you're planning to enlist in the military...that sounds like a draft to me.

No offense to the Democratic party, but the only political group who has ever improved things for the military has been the Republicans. When Clinton was in office, pay was decreased, benefits were decreased, funding was decreased, our missile defense systems were shut down...the list goes on and on. Since Bush has come into office, our pay has gone up, benefits have improved, and the standard of living is slowly going up. Yes, I do know this for a fact because my father is in the military. These reasons are why generally most military members are Republicans, because that party is the only party who does what you are suggesting.

To me, it sounded like Kerry was trying to be Super Man. Somehow, he is going to lower taxes for the middle class (by most likely raising the taxes to extreme amounts for the rich who are already paying the majority of our taxes), improve health care and provide it for everyone, improve our schools, improve our military, and still manage to pay off the defecit. I'm sorry, but that really does not sound realistic. The money for these programs has to come from somewhere, and that place is either taxes, Social Security, or our defecit increases. And just out of curiosity, was my family the only lower middle class family in the United States that got a tax break last year? Kerry sure made it sound that way, but I know we got a check. Just a question.

I'm liking The Podium idea. Not only does it fit the form for debates, but for those of us who want to discuss current events and the such, all news conferences have a podium too! Short, sweet, to the point and relevent. I like it a lot. Props to ya!
