Simple question. Which is worse? Getting a needle (injection or blood test, etc) from the doctor? OR The build-up before actually getting the needle? (ie, when they find a vein, get the needles out, prepare, etc, etc. OR After the actual needle, when you can feel your arm all heavy or dead, or you're dizzy from the blood test, etc..? I think I find that the build up is the worst part for me. The pain of getting an injection or blood test isn't all that bad, but the build up beforehand -- the KNOWING that pain is going to be forthcoming -- is the worst bit. Once I usually get the needle, the pain is nowhere near what my mind will blow it out to be in the time immediately before the needle. Actually getting the needle puts things back into proportion again. But beforehand, my mind starts making things out to be worse than they are and I get that nasty pit in my tummy and all. Course, if it's a blood test and I'm not well in the first place, the dizziness kinda sucks, but it's by far not the worst part. Anyways, which do YOU find the worst part about getting a needle? |

Absolutely nothing. I've never been afraid of needles. In fact, in some weird way, I kinda enjoy getting shots. Maybe it's the thrill that other people are scared and I'm not. Or I'm just a sick bastard. They don't hurt, at all. Getting pinched hurts more than a needle, and even that isn't much. |

That's what makes the anxiety beforehand with me even more annoying and weird -- I know that the needle will not really hurt. It'll be a short, sharp little pain, nothing spectacular, and that's it. (Unless they fuck it up, then it hurts a little more) I just hate the way that cause I KNOW there's pain coming (even if it is a little tiny bit of pain) my mind works it up into this BIG THING instead of the tiny little nothing it really is. Go, overactive imagination! |

None of the above. What bothers me, is when I give blood and they prick your finger to test your iron levels. That's what bothers me the most about needles, before the needle even comes into play. |

I'm not afraid of needles nor do I think they hurt, I don't see how people can be afraid of them. :\

I'm not really afraid of needles either. I had 7 years of allergy shots (basically shots twice a week) so it kinda curbed it. What y'all should try is a spinal tap, which is ~not~ fun, especially when they botch it, or an allergy skin test which I have to do soon. It's 40 little pricks of a needle on your back, it sucks =/ but yeah, needles in general don't really bother me.

Originally posted by Lunar Depths I had to get allergy tests when I was younger as well. They didn't do it all my back, but all over both of my arms. Oy...not fun...nothing like getting injected with several types of bugs, dust, and so on. I got allergy shots every week for a little while as well. |

I was afraid of a needle once in my life. It's a long story... The whole class was invited to a birthday party. We were going to the town on our bikes. While the others was preparing, I was climbing a pole in their garden. Then they shouted at me. So I slided down the pole. BUT... there was a hook on it that i didn't see. That hook went through my pants, my underpants... and me... (Guess where ) Then i hung there... You can only imagine the pain. Somehow i managed to get free. After that Spoiler: they drove me to the hospital. I needed to get anaesthetized (not the way where you loses consciousness) so they gave me a shot at the place... the pain was even worse than when i hung at the pole and I screamed. Totally. But that's not the needle that scared me. They stitched (fixed?) the wound. After that... Oh, maybe I should tell that I was 9 years old and my parents first came after they fixed the wound. Oh well... After that I needed a vaccination. They was trying to give me the shot but I couldn't take anymore needles that day. Hell I was scared. I got it, but i was scared.I could actually see my left testicle. Seriously the TESTICLE! I hope noone feels offended by me for telling this. It's a true story. I still have the scar. |

The thing before, thought I hadn't have a injection in like... ten years. The last time was some vaccenation. I still remember how scared I was. And I heard there is alternative methods... I remember the last time when someone did a blood test on me, that did hurt thought... |

i think the build up of the needle is worst for me. I don't know, I can't really stand something foreign injected to me for a prolonged amount of time. If it wasn't for that, I'd give blood on a regular basis.

Needles freak me out. The worst part is knowing that you have a pin stuck into one of your veins or muscles or whereever you're getting poked. I've actually had a blood test only about a week ago...it wasn't that painful, but the thought kept nagging me.

The needles aren't shit, but I have low blood pressure and sometimes horrible things happen after shots. ...Maybe not horrible things. I did go blind for a few minutes once, though, and that's never fun.

I don't have a phobia for many things, but NEEDLES digging almost an inch into your skin... That of all things freaks me out. Here's a simple preparation to do before you get the point. 1) bring a small plastic bag with you to the office. 2) hide it from your doctor 3) hear that you are getting a shot 4) when doctor leaves the room, seal bag over mouth with hands and start breathing heavy 5) pass out 6) when you get up, hope the doctor gave you the shot already. 7) if he didn't repeat steps 4-6 as necessary. |

Definitely the anxiety of the needle. It's just like a number of things I'd go through that I'm not especially fond of doing. Oh geez you should've seen me when I was a little kid versus one of those...I've really got a thing against them. |

Needles don't really freak me out nearly as much as they used to. However, a needle digging into my flesh isn't my first choice of entertainment... |
