How did you edit the graphics in Red? I thought there was unsolved compression issues?

Backstory: my family is very religious, and I've been brought up to just accept the values and morals shoved upon me. Dating with a non-believer and before I can support a family is a no-no.

There is a girl who once told me that she loved me. I told her I couldn't date, and that was the end of it. For a few weeks. We had so many conversations that were so personel... I fell in love with her.

It took me weeks of battling with myself. Do I shed all of the restrictions of my religion and live life the way I want, or do I stick by my beliefs?

The worst day of my life, so far, came when I when I made the mistake of telling the girl how I felt, after I had made the painful decision to keep with my beliefs. She got very angry with me, told me to stop talking to her. I don't know why I told her, but I did, and I felt for sure I had never and would never feel more hell. But, despite this, I found comfort in the fact that perhaps she wasn't gone forever, maybe we could still be friends. And besides, I had stuck by my beliefs.

About the not feeling more hell thing? I was wrong.

That night my mom decides to have a talk with me. She starts telling me about how I'm so weak, that I'm not making any commitments inside of the religion. She kept on going on about how I was so discouraging to her and how disappointing my life was to her, how I would fail under any test of my spiritual strength.

Sufficed to say, I've never cried so much in one night.

Hello. I'm rather new to Pokemon hacking, and hacking in general. I've read all of the FAQs I've come accross and whatnot, and I sincerely hope I don't come off as an idiotic newbie.

My question is, how can I get the size of a Pokemon's battle sprite so I can properly insert my own pictures? I've tried checking the pokemon data tables which, according to a hacking guide I read, had the 12th byte in every table being the size... but, for the most part, it's always 00. Does this stand for a default size setting?

Hmm... I'm still having problems...

I'm using some DOS program. I don't know what it's name is, but it has three executables: POINT, INS, and GIF. When I tried to replace Bulbasaur's pic with a test 57x57 image, it came out garbled in the game. I assumed, due to an earlier conversation with Smallhacker, that this distorting was caused by me trying to use the wrong image siz.

So, I've just tried 63x63... it is still garbled. Is there any one thing that will cause this? It just looks like my test pic was cut up into small rectangles and reassembled at random.

Hmm, 48x48 worked Thanks!

However, some space at the bottom and to the right are cut off. I assume this is just something I have to work around?

Posted on 12-23-04 09:44 PM, in New Program Link
Hello. I've been trying to hack a NES rom from scratch, diving back into corruption to do so... however, it was really confusing me. So I've made a simple, rough program to aid in it. I had to make my own program because I didn't find any others that did it, though I may not have been looking for long enough.

Anyways, I got thinking about how maybe I could release it. I just wanted to know if it's practical to put in the extra work to make it user-friendly and to put in more stuff. I don't want to put out a copy of another program.

My program will search a given range of a file for a specific byte (Or list of bytes, if I add that)), and with every instace it'll record the location and spacing since the last instance. It will also provide you with the surrounding bytes to a depth of two. Basicly, it's purpose is to help you find patterns.

Is there another program made for this purpose? Would people find this useful at all?

My mom found out that my 200 or so ROMs were illegal. She confronted me, and I gave her a long explaination of the irrelvancy on their legality and the moral basis and how it wasn't theft, and how the U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled something to the effect of ROMs of games that are no longer in production or sales are legal. When I was almost done she just told me to stop talking and she'd drop it

I'll bet you dollars to the donoughts that the real reason Nintendo doesn't like emulation is because they're planning to get patents on emulators for their systems, make some more money off of them with a computer gaming company. But, that's just my crazy theory o.O

This isn't my first hacking attempt, but it's the first one that I'm ever going to release. It's called Super Mario Noir. After trying to brainstorm project ideas, somehow my multitasking involving writing a film noir parody for Communication Technologies class and my Bomberman hack sorta mixed together.

This is what I have so far... just looking for some early feedback so I don't have to go through changing the entire hack for systematic mistakes and stupidities.

Ha looks like one of those old black and white movies.
looks good.

Yep. It's styled after a genre of film called Film Noir (Black Film in french). They cropped up during and after WW2, indulging people in their fascination with darkness in the world. Most Film Noir movies were black and white despite the technology for colour and characterized by a man drawn into the world of crime by his own reluctant choice or by happenstance. Great films!

What's bad is I bet you'll get a few "Use custom GFX and Overworld" comments in here.

Which is not to say game play isn't important, but we all love shiny stuff-- myself included, so my suggestion is to create some really great black and white gritty graphics for both location and characters.

Other than that it's a very good idea. Makes me wish I'd thought of it.

Yes, I've been meaning to do this. Though, in truth, I've been putting off even stepping into overworld editing... it scares me o.o And thank you very much for the compliment. I was worried that this idea had already come to fruition.

I like the idea...immediately made me think of the murder-mystery part of Paper Mario (with the penguin detective...who would be a welcome sight ;D)

I haven't played this game yet! I'll have to research him. A penguin detective sounds absolutely perfect!

Thanks for all of the great feedback! Actually, I accomplished 90% of the changed pallet by decreasing the saturation to zero. I have played around with a lot of colours, though, and I accidently screwed up the title screen more than I intended to.

The Kins: Oh yes, I hate the limit I would do anything for more text boxes per level, and my ultimate dream would be to extent the length of the text.

d4s: I really don't know a lot about hacking yet, but that can really be accomplished? If so, I'm going to look into it immediatly.

DisruptiveIdiot: Thanks! And I completely forgot about that!

d4s: I've tried some searching around, but I can't find any real helpful advice or information on Layer 3. Can someone direct me to somewhere with some information so I can comprehend exactly what I would have to do? In the meantime I'll keep on searching. I just don't want to overlook some painfully obvious page that would save me hours upon hours.

Hmm... yes, everything must have hats! Well, not everything. But I'll keep the bush in mind!

I've been planning on delving into assembly... but I've been rather scared. Thus, I'll try and learn the assembly while working on the hack... I'll try and implement a film grain, if possible, later rather than sooner.

Edit: Just looked at the site... BoF2 looks absolutely amazing!

Edit #2: Can anybody please tell me where the stupid GFX for the gray cement block is? I can't find it anywhere...

Thanks! Was tricky to find, must have missed it like a gallizion times.

Now, I've been playing around with layer 3... this looks like it's going to be hard. I assume I have to set the FG/BG index to something that uses layer 3 and can be put on top of anything else?
