You know why Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door got a 6? It is a Nintendo product, and to some people Nintendo makes kids games. Sure you have a character that is a plumber who eats mushrooms and stops reptiles, but the thing is that is fun. I have played Ratchet and Clank (the first one) and the thing that I liked about that game was its humor. The gameplay was fun at first, but then started to get repetitive... in my opinion, of course.

See, these reviewers think Nintendo just makes kids games because of Pokemon. Once that game was released, Nintendo has been getting a bad reputation. So Nintendo made a more kid oriented game? Big deal. They made money and the Pokemon series is an original idea that probably nobody could have thought of. Don't say Digimon because that was just a knock-off of Pokemon, just with Digi in the front.

PS2, in my opinion, is just a bunch of sequels after sequels after sequels. They think "If it ain't bad, why improve it?" X-Box wouldn't have even made it this far if it weren't for Halo. But why is Nintendo still making games? Because of two reasons: 1) They generally own the handheld gaming industry, and 2) They make games that are fun for not just one group of audiences, but for everyone. That is why people are biased against Nintendo games. They hate the fact that there are no ultra-realistic blood-spewing gun-blasting foul-mouthed games made by Nintendo (except Conker's Bad Fur Day... possibly Metroid Prime).

I have a Gamepro magazine that has a review of Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Stike. I have seen really good reviews of this game but Gamepro brought down the rating because of the Gamecube controller. That is just stupid. Other games from Gamecube also had that same problem...

Paper Mario needs a better score. It is good, original, and different. Just because the graphics aren't realistic or it isn't gun shooting oriented doesn't mean it is bad. These reviewers need to review just that game, not compare it to other games. Sure it isn't Halo, but who gives a crap about that old game?*

Final Verdict: Game reviewers are biased. Most people turn their attention away from Nintendo games because of the characters, but without these characters, what characters would there be? Sonic would not exist if it weren't for Mario. Master Cheif wouldn't even be thought of without Samus. High-speed future racing games would not be made without F-ZERO. So are we better off without Nintendo? No. Without Nintendo, the gaming industry would not exist today and if it did, video games wouldn't be good.
Yes, I am biased. Who here isn't? Nobody. You will see biased people and opinions all the time. There is nothing you can do to stop it.

*I like Halo, yes, but it is old and if you are still thinking it is the best game ever, please do not review other games. You will just hate other games for this reason.

Well, I tried tracing the presents screen to see how you did that and all I found are a bunch of jumps to other areas that deal with the code for it. Very weird and confusing...

I am just trying to find out the data for how you did this stuff... somehow, I can' find anything worth using... because it is complicated. Plus, I would rather edit the code myself... if only I had the data...

You did good in this hack. Seriously. Great work.

Well, try taking one of the graphic files in yourhackfoder/Graphics and copy/paste it in the ExGFX folder, renaming it, inserting it, and then deleting the tiles. That is what I do anyway...

So I tried it out to see how it would look. I think that it will turn out really well. Here is a small little change to Joe to make him... well, more cartoony.

Ignore everything except Joe himself.

Looks cartoony for sure. It could be a challenge to try and make the entire game like that... which is cool for me!

Well, fire Joe is just a palette change, and cape Joe is just big Joe with a cape, so... I am halfway there. I just have to make the sprite for bigger Joe. He is going to be tougher to draw...

Nothing beats the old games in my opinion. I used to play Digger at school in 4th grade using 5 1/4 floppys! That is an old game... really.

Anyway, I would recommend the following:

Starcraft
Command And Conquer (Any of them)
Half-Life
The Incredible Machine

These four are good games. The last one comes in a two pack that has both The Return of the Incredible Machine: Contraptions and The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions for $10 (US). If you have never played or heard of the game, it is a very good puzzle game that has a whole bunch of difficult puzzles. Lots.

My first hack was Mario's Fun Levels. That was when I just knew how to edit the level design. I was suprised many people liked it in the first place. It was just a level hack too... no fancy ExGFX or anything like that... really sad excuse of a hack...

Nice. When you do release this data, I will be sure to try to make my own style of this... maybe some cool layer 3 effects? Who knows?

It could be possible to do some similar stuff that Yoshi's Island uses... such as special background effects and such... but only if I knew what did what with layer 3.

I messed up something one time that made layer 3 block the entire screen... weird... that must have been the code...

EDIT: I just thought of something... it could be possible, but anyway.
How about when you get near an enemy, it says the enemy name? That would be rather interesting, although would require extensive ASM...

BTW, do you have any ASM at all in this hack? (custom ASM, not stuff that eggvine may insert)

1. ExGFX will probably not be possible unless you insert it into some areas in the rom that have the code FF for a while... besides, you have a limited palette to work with...

2. I was going to make the P-Switch do something and I found the code for when teh P-Switch is activated, but I had no other data so there was no way for me to do anything with it...

You may as well do the latter if you don't plan on hacking any NES games.

Well, I don't really hack NES games, but I learned 6502 ASM before jumping into 65816 ASM. Doing the first is a whole lot easier to do that than just jumping into the latter. Doing 6502 first, you will understand the basic commands (such as LDA, INC, STA, etc.) and then go on to using the more... complex stuff (RTS, JMP, etc.). I still don't know all the extra features...

And ASM is not hard. Finding the data, though... is hard...

I know everyone waited for Eggvine to be released. Then when people got it, they thought that there are no graphics so there is no way that you can make levels. You can make levels. You just have to know what object works where, plus think of some interesting ideas for levels. And please don't say you need graphics to make a level because just imagine if it was just a hex editor and trying to make a level. Iggy did this and did a fantastic job with it, but I sure can't edit that way. This editor is already ultra-powerful as it is, so...

That is what this thread is for. If you have a question about Eggvine, from what header commands do something specific or need to know how to edit mid-ring points (not featured yet...), ask away.

Nobody needs to sticky this. If nobody asks questions, then I guess it could be buried. If there are plenty of questions, then it is still up to mods/admins to decide whether or not to...

I will start off by saying this: If you do not look through the original Yoshi's Island and try to hack it, you will definitly be stumped. If you know a level layout (such as 1-2) and then look at it in Eggvine, you can actually start seeing the level. Also, experiment with the header and objects to see what does what and such. Don't just assume you can't make a level because there are no graphics. You can easily edit levels with this editor with almost no limitations (besides... the bytes left... thing...). Please at least mess around with some stuff first before giving up. You will surely easily be able to use the editor.

If I can't answer a question, then somebody else might be willing to answer it. I have a job and such, but I will try to answer as soon as possible...

Writing 0 into this one makes L3 appear on the whole screen, while 208 (dec) is the standard mode with anything below the status bar cut off.

So that is how it works? That is how I made layer 3 appear throughout the screen...

Nice discovery. Now for me to mess around with this...

Those levels are near impossible to make. I did it in my hack and it still has errors with the right corners. It uses the following objects that I know of:

AC: Pipe Ceiling (Is the ceiling...)
AA: Pipe wall (left side)
AB: Pipe wall (right side)
AD: The floors for the sewer levels.

Those are used for the outline as far as I know. To make the wall, use these objects:

B0: Hole in Castle wall? (It is actually the pipe background)
B1: Horizontal platform (use on wall)

If you around the Ax and Bx (where x is a number from 0-F) objects you could probably find more objects...
