I honestly never expected to see you making any sort of hack, Nebetsu, but if I had to guess, I'd say one of the reasons for this was because of boredom during your ban Anyhow, I won't dwell on that too long, but instead comment on the screenshots.

It's a nice touch, how you changed 'Mario' into 'Nebio' All four of those screenshots look good. There's nothing wrong in them that I can see, with the exception of a small thing in the last one. The farthest block down of the column that's connected to the left side of the bridge is off by a few pixels. It may even just be something with the screenshot, since I notice that everything below that block is shifted to the left a bit

At first I was going to ask what exactly Bowser was doing in level 4-2, but then I noticed the pallette of it There's a slight chance that could be because you changed Mario's pallette as well, but the color it is right now looks very familiar. Also, having a longer bridge looks neat as well.

Once again, those screens do look nice, although would we be able to see any of a swimming level, since I notice there's none there (that is, if there's one of those levels in the game), or another level type that you didn't show?

Last but not least, the obvious question: how long before we see a demo?

I did a google search for it, and I came across this page which seems to have some info on it. Apparently it's used to run 16-bit applications, so if you close it, and try to open an application that fits into that category, it'll start itself up again.

As far as the space before it, I don't know why it would be there I'm don't know why those columns are blank though

Edit: Reading through another board I found via the google search, I came across something about the space at the beginning of the process name, and likely why the other columns are blank:

"There is a spoof of this process called _wowexec.exe. Running a program such as Lavasoft's AdAware or SpyBot S&D should remove the spoof. Note that the naughty stealth authors are using this methodology more and more. Creating a spoof of a known process which you would typically miss on casual inspection. Yet another reason why it is more and more important to run such utilities. More is written on these wonderful utilities elsewhere in this section. "

I've just finished the demo of this hack, and there's no game-breaking glitches, which is always good to start off with One thing I really noticed in the first level, that's more of a suggestion, is wherever you have a fire stick attached to a 'normal' block, as in one that Mario (or Nebio, in this case), can break when he's big, at least change it to a block that gives you a coin or powerup, and turns solid after. Otherwise, it looks strange when you break the block, to have a fire stick rotating in midair

I forget the details of how it works, but after I beat the Bowser in the first castle, and was returned to the title screen, I went to start again, and ended up starting at level 4-1 That's not a big deal, but when you say you want to keep the other levels a secret, it might be a good idea to try to find out if there's a way to not allow that to happen

About draining the swimming levels, that's fine. It's your hack, so you're welcome to do what you want. I didn't really mind playing them in the original game, or any other hack for that matter, but at the same time, I wasn't happy when I found myself in one.

Shooting fireballs in a straight line was a bit difficult to get used to, but it's a good change to have in the game. I didn't come across the fast Bullet Bills at all, but if they're anywhere near the speed the fireballs shoot at, that'd be something to see in action

I don't know about a graphics extractor / inserter. I imagine you should just be able to open the ROM in YY-CHR or something similar, but the graphics may be compressed

The only SMB2 editor I know of is here. There's one I remember seeing someone post a thread on while I was lurking here called 'DreamWeaver' I believe (yes, I'm well aware that's a webpage design program as well ), so maybe someone knows exactly what became of that

Nebetsu beat me to it, but here's a link to the Graphics Hacking Utilites page on Zophar. YY-CHR is right down near the bottom

Note that when you open the ROM, in the lowest drop down list (it'll say 'Normal' by default), you have to select 'FC/NES x16', if you want the graphics to show up proper

Posted on 01-14-05 09:50 AM, in What would YOU like to see in a SMB1 hack? Link
:: New Graphics
This one's a given, but I still thought I'd mention it, because anyone that has an SMB1 editor and an SMB1 ROM on their computer can make a Mario hack. It's things like new graphics that make the game stand out. Along with that, some work should be put into editing Mario's, Bowser's, Toad's, etc appearance.

:: An ASM hack to change how high Mario jumps
I don't know how possible this is, but I still think it's a neat idea. You could tie it in with the above thing, and have a hack that looks like it takes place in space, in which case Mario jumping higher would make sense.

:: A Bonus Mode or Something Similar that Times how Fast you Beat the Levels
I'm not sure what other opinons are, but I think it'd be cool to have a timer of sorts that timed how long it took you to beat a level, and possibly would even give you a bonus (such as a 1-Up), if you beat the level under a certain time limit.

:: Challenging, but not Overly-Difficult Levels
I don't know a lot of people that enjoy playing hacks that require 20+ savestates a level, and as such, make sure your levels aren't too hard to beat, but at the same time aren't too easy either. I figure if you, the game creator can make your way through the level without exploiting any glitches, without using any savestates, and the level is well made (isn't really easy), then it's a good one.

Those four are what I can think of right now I may add more later, but that depends on whether I can think of anything else to add or not

Going by what Xkeeper said, here's what I think the difference between ASM and Data is.

The difficulty level in terms of editing the two is pretty obvious Anyways, ASM determines how something works in a game, like in this case, how Mario jumping would work. Data, in this example, would define how far, and how high Mario would jump, given certain conditions, such as whether you were running or not. In short, ASM defines how different actions happen. Data is the specifics for those actions.

I hope that's right I get those two mixed up quite a lot, which is fairly obvious by now

I used to like those, but I ate them too frequently, and now I can't stand them

Also, there've been two posts in this thread saying that soup takes less than 5 minutes to make. Whenever I make it, it takes somewhere near 10 minutes, with mixing all the stuff up in the pot, waiting for it to heat up then eating it That's the stuff from the can though, so maybe you have different stuff than we do

I think doing something like that could be avoided by always having a number of 'blocks' of coins at the end. By blocks, I mean a 4x4 block of coins, or a similar size. Most levels in the demo do have that sort of thing near the end right now That would also put a big hole in the game, as you'd be able to get all the coins possible out of a block, wait for it to recharge, and go at it again. If it's possible to limit the number of times that it recharges though, it could be a good idea.

Your post made me think of something else though. Before Luigi's Red Coin Quest was cancelled, you were able to go back into the levels and play them again, like you can in Super Mario World, for example. That would be cool to see in this hack, if you have the knowledge to know how to do so. One thing I'd like about it is the ability to be able to try to beat the level as fast as possible, like a speed run sort of thing.

Nice idea, adding an item that changes the music, Rockman It'll be a suprise for the person / people that don't read this thread, and just play the game when a full version comes out. You'd hit a block, and think you're lucky because you found a 1-Up. Go to get it, and wonder why the music changed

What OS are you using? I'm running XP, and here's what I did. Have the rlm.exe file, and the ROM you want to unlock on your desktop. Make sure the ROM filename has no spaces in it. Click 'Start'->'Run', and in the box that pops up, type 'cmd'. That will open a command prompt, which should show stuff about which version of Windows you're running at the top, then this line:

c:\Documents and Settings\[username]>

Type 'cd Desktop', press enter, then put in

rlm [locked ROM filename].smc [filename to save unlocked ROM as].smc (without the square brackets).

Hit enter, and it should go through unlocking the ROM, and create another file on your desktop, which is the unlocked version of the ROM. Open that in Lunar Magic, and you're set for whatever you want to do.

I hope no one gets angry with me for explaining that It's pretty much just a more detailed version of the 'Using RLM' section in the readme.

As far as the actual release of this, I'll say nice work on it There's obvious issues with it, as other people have pointed out, but my whole opinion on this is, if someone unlocks your ROM, and uses it to find secrets in the game / steal your graphics / whatever else, it's their loss.

If they use it to find secrets, or even get through levels easier, it'll take most of the fun of figuring out things on your own away. If someone wants to steal your graphics or base their hack off of what you've done, then they're only hurting themselves once again. First off, they won't figure out how to add graphics in the game the right way, which would definitely present a roadblock if they wanted to add something else to your work, and I think it'd also be fairly obvious if someone stole what you did.

Personally, I think that all this program does is make it easier to get into a locked ROM. Even if this program didn't exist, it wouldn't make it any harder for someone with the time and knowledge to be able to unlock a ROM. Sure, the feeling might still be the same even to someone who unlocked it manually, but it's still the same thing in the end

Take that for what you will, as it's just my opinion

Very good moral I didn't get any prompt about downloading stuff (I'm using Firefox), but I still had to use System Restore to get my computer working again earlier. After logging on, things went strange. I'd go into detail, but this isn't the thread for that. Basically put, if I didn't have System Restore, I'd likely have formatted by now

I watched that flash movie, and I really don't see what's funny about it , besides when they throw things that have nothing to do with llamas in, like the orange and whatever else it was

Still a fun thing to do when you're bored though

Watch paint dry. I'm assuming you're asking this question in the sense that, if we had to do one of these, which one would we do

The reason for my choice is because paint doesn't take an incredibly long time to dry, to my knowledge, and for all anyone knows, you could be watching paint dry on a painting you just did, which would give you a chance to sit back and take a look at your work

Definitely go with what Masterofmario11 said, but along with that, if there's someone that can keep track of how long you play a day, and cut you off after a certain amount of time, that'd be even better. It could be someone like a friend or a parent. One of the main things with doing that, is that you might not have another activity to go to after you're done on the computer.

What I'd advise to remedy that, is this: before you turn on the computer each day, decide when you'll be done on it (set a reasonable time limit like 1-2 hours), and also decide what you're going to do after your time is done. That could be something like reading a book, cleaning up the area around you, or anything else. Also, if you plan on going on the computer more than once a day (which is understandable), decide when those times will be, and stick to them.

As an alternative, there's also programs out there on the internet that you can download, that have the ability to shut down the computer at a certain time each day, or possibly not allow it to be used until a specified time. The only thing is, unless someone else does the setting up, etc. of it (since I'm assuming the settings would at least be password-protected), it'd be your responsibility to make sure you don't take advantage of it

I did a google search for programs of those sort, and this was the only one that came up that didn't involve buying extra hardware and stuff. It is shareware, but, well, that can be avoided if you know where to look.

:: KidsWatch Time Control

Don't think you're the only one that's ever been in this situation. A year or so ago now, I noticed I was spending an increasinly large amount of time on the computer, but now I don't feel that way, as I have things during the week that keep me away from it

I was hoping to avoid saying it, but in the end it's going to take your willpower to limit your time on the computer. If you have problems with it though, you can always come back and tell us about them

I saw that a while back while looking for extensions that looked interesting, and it is quite an odd one

Although, given what it's for, how many of you have your computer in your kitchen? Ours is kind of close (I look over to my left and I can see the stove), but I'd prefer to do everything while in the kitchen, than having to run back and forth to the computer to see what to do next

I like the first thing they put in the known bugs section of version 0.1:

"Due to the ideological bias of some team members the soft egg setting is too hard"

Internal disagreement. I guess if it would allow you to cook a better egg though, it's worth it.

I'll admit this. I've never seen the game before I understand the fact that he's doing whatever you have to do in the game an an insane speed, which is cool in itself, but it'd be nice to know what exactly you're supposed to do

As far as the movie itself, that guy must've had way too much time on his hands I wonder how many tries it took him to get that good
