I found 500 spyware and 50 viruses on my grandmother's PC. It ran fast after deleting them. I've seen a 486 with 512 kb (yes, KB) of free hard drive space. It had a 512 MB hard drive. I deleted some worthless stuff on it and have kept it at a steady 30MB free space. |

I was wondering, could anyone make me a post layout? I was thinking of something like my post being displayed in the Notepad program, with the post number being in the file name. Is that possible? Also, I'd like it to be in the Windows XP Silver theme.

Maybe I'll think of something different. I've no experience with any of this.

I was just at my friend's house. They've had a computer for 4 years, my friend's sister runs Kazaa and other file-sharing programs a lot, and the computer is as slow as a dead slug. They had no spyware removal software, and their anti-virus didn't work. I went over and installed Ad-aware. 2277 spywares. Surprisingly, no viruses were found. I destroyed a computer quite well once. When I was five, I wanted to install Kid Pix on an old 486 with Windows 3.1. There was not enough space, so I went and deleted "blank files", files with no association. I figured that all the data for a program was stored in the .exe, and that the extra files were there just to take up space. I installed it, and deleted it cause it was too slow. Turned it off. Came back the next day. Wouldn't boot into Windows. I had to get my uncle to restore it from the CD. |

I seem to remember killing a Mac by somehow setting it to boot only from CD. We don't have any CD's that are bootable.

I was on the web, downloading .mod music, when I came across some that (in Amiga format) were .DIGI. I figured out they were DigiBooster music, and tried opening them in Modplug Tracker. Didn't work. I tried to find Digibooster software, but it's only for Amiga (i don't have one) Anyone know how to convert these?

My dad installed McAfee Privacy Service on our PC. Now I have to type in ANOTHER password just to connect to the web. But worse, it blocks so called "adult content". I went to a PHPBB message board that doesn't allow adult content and it said it had intercepted adult content. Once it finds some( which isn't adult content), it refuses to continue loading the website. This also happens here the Acmlmboard (though there might be real adult content) so I have trouble reading threads here. I can't disable it either without disabling my Antivirus and Firewall too. Does anyone know what I can do?

Heh, fooled my dad. I put a picture on my website that looks appropriate but actually has a porn-like name. My website was blocked. He set me to 'adult' level, so now I'm free.

I'm trying to connect to my FTP using SmartFTP, but when it tries to connect, it gives me the error: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it." I've been trying different things for over four hours, and nothing works. I have checked, and my login & connection information is correct I thought it was McAfee Privacy Service that my dad installed that was making the problem, since it was the only thing different on the system since last time I connected. I had my dad disable it. Still didn't work. I checked my Firewall. The allowed/blocked programs list shows it. I tried using a different FTP program. Nothing. The only way I CAN get in is through web-browser FTP (such as net2ftp) What is wrong? |

Heh, I just freed 70 megs on my brother's old 486. It's pretty empty now, so I'm installing multimedia apps so my brother can basically use it as a music player. We have a collection of over 500 module files (extensions .MOD/.XM/.S3M/.IT) but there is no player for Windows 3.1 and exiting into DOS to run Impulse Tracker is too much hassle. I can't find a single Windows 3.1 player that will play all 4 formats mentioned above. I've googled for almost 2 hours on this. Can anyone give me a download link to a player?

That happened to me once. I think I ran Firefox with the switch "-p" and made a new profile, then used instructions from the Firefox website to transfer my bookmarks and etc.

This is soft of neat. I'll be able to boot my 3 favorite OS's on one computer. Also, the programs will not have to be rewritten. Apple has a technology called "Rosetta" that will allow the PPC apps to run on the Intel Mac. Rumors are going around that they're also going to drop Classic. That would make me sad. Whenever I boot up Windows, I get a message from my virus scanner that C:\XZ.EXE was infected with "W32/Sdbot.worm.gen.h". It comes up every time I start the computer-- seeming to make the file again and again on every boot. I looked it up, but it's hard to find info to remove it. McAfee says it makes two registry keys: # HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Run "Services Host" = scchost.exe # HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\RunServices "Services Host" = scchost.exe But they are not there. It also says it will copy itself to the Startup folder in the start menu, but it's not there. I don't know what to do, help!! |

Sure, that'd be great, but apparently this virus has over 4000 variants, and each one uses a different name. I don't know what files could be if I don't know which variant it is (all the variants have the same name in virus databases)

Crap. Reformat the drive? I'd have to back up 100 GB of data!!! I just noticed that I can't see my SYSTEM32 directory any more. Viewing hidden files and folders is on, but it's not there. I run NTFS, BTW. EDIT: I found out I can get to the SYSTEM32 directory using the command prompt. It just won't appear in Explorer. EDIT2: I just found out this virus was dropped into a file as C:\XZ.exe by "Win32.Alcan.B". Im going to try removing it. EDIT3: I got rid of the virus by deleting C:\Program Files\Winupdate. It's the Win32.Alcan.B virus. I'm not getting the virus alerts any more, but one of the symptoms of the virus is that it creates fake .com files in SYSTEM32 that keep me from running those apps unless I type the full path (typing regedit in run would open regedit.com, which is fake, so I must type C:\windows\regedit.exe) I went into command prompt and tried deleting the COM files, but it claims they do not exist. Also, I still can't see my SYSTEM32 directory. (edited by KsoftFusion on 06-08-05 03:06 AM) (edited by KsoftFusion on 06-08-05 03:24 AM) (edited by KsoftFusion on 06-08-05 03:50 AM) |

I'm redesigning my website using IBDynamic Lite (Dynamic script for Invision Power Board 1.3) and I want to add some normal HTML pages into the mix. The problem is that they open in the same window (due to limited customization that will not let me change this) and my visitors may get lost, because I don't want to add navigation at the top of all those HTML pages. I'm looking for a PHP script to help me, so that I can link to the script, and it will open the HTML page in a new window, then change the page with the script on it back to the main page. Is there a script out there that will do this? |
