So, here it is. A demo for yet another Mario World hack. Just so you don't feel let down when (if) you download the demo, here's a list of things NOT to expect when you're playing this:

-Incredible feats of ASM prowess.
-ExGFX of extremely high quality.
-A good title screen.
-A good demo on the title screen.
-A good name for the hack.
-Revolutionary gameplay.

Here's what you should expect to find:

-Fun levels.
-Custom blocks.
-Slightly new gameplay.
-Slightly modified graphics.
-Medium-hard difficulty, with a slice of easy thrown in for good measure.
-A sense of humor.
-About 30-40 minutes of gameplay, depending on your skill level. I think.
-Some secret exits.
-Palettes that don't make your eyes bleed and/or explode.
-Glitch-free (hopefully) gameplay.

Anyway, enough with the shitty lists, here are the screenshots, and here's the download. You'll have to excuse the really ugly website, I threw it together in about 20 minutes, plus I have no sense of style.

Feel free to tell me about any glitches I may have missed, anything you didn't like, or just how much I rock/suck. Also, if you have ANY better ideas for a name (and hopefully some kind of storyline to go with it), feel free to tell me. I can't come up with anything even remotely good.

EDIT: Patch fixed. Should work now.

Eh, damnit. I'm sure I made some stupid mistake, lemme test the patch. I'll make a new one if it doesn't work, and if it does, I'll just get all confused and stuff and make a new patch anyway.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. I did it BACKWARDS. If you ever want to turn my hack into normal SMW, use that patch, but for all you normal people, I re-uploaded it. Just re-download that file and it should work. Sorry about that.

Nope, this is my only hack. Well, to be more specific, my only released hack. I made a 5 or 6 level SMB3 hack, but I never sent it to anyone and have since lost it.

So, in short, no.

Hey, thanks for all the feedback.

Actually, that's just in the screenshot. I use Yoshi's House to test levels I'm making because I keep screwing up my saved games by changing the overworld. So I just point that level to whatever level I'm making. Just a bit of an oversight on my part. It should say "Quick Koopa's House" in the actual game.

Er, damn. Didn't know the Frigid Fortress wall was broken. I just opened up the hack and realized I somehow managed to remove the teleport block. You're supposed to run right past that wall into the next section of the level. I'll fix that.

Seriously, though. Frigid Fortress. Fix it. And tone down the difficulty. Like, add a speed block or something. And make the background pipes darker. Even though they're already dark, They still look so damn close to regular pipes...

Ah, yeah, I thought I only had trouble with it because I suck at SMW. (Yeah, I know, it's sad.) I'll tone down the difficulty on that bit. I'll darken the pipes as well.

I haven't finished it yet - this is longer than I expected - but in Glacial Ascent, if you take the low road and use the pipe, when you re-enter the level, the background is off.

Oops. I'll fix that.

Completed every level. Like I said, it's fun at the start, but it gets less fun the farther you go.

Actually, that's the problem I've been running into. I've kinda run out of level ideas, so I've put the hack on hold until some magical inspiration fairy beats me on the head with her Stick o' Level Ideas. I'll eventually release some kind of finished hack, and it'll have fun levels. Just don't expect it until about 2013.

You mean...that's the one with the jumbled graphics? Because there is no Frigid Ascent, which would explain a lot.

I assume you meant Frigid Fortress, though. Honestly, I don't see any jumbled graphics. Just a stupid mistake that prevents you from finishing the level. (Oops.) You'll have to clarify, I guess.

If you meant Glacial Ascent, then I have no idea what you're talking about.

I wondered why that wasn't showing in Firefox... Thanks.

Anyway, thanks again for all the feedback. I hate to admit it, but it's actually inspired me to work on the hack again. I'm gonna revamp some of the later levels to try and make them less sucky (and less difficult), and I'll probly release another demo after I get a couple more worlds done. Don't expect it anytime soon, though; it took me a year and a half to get this far.

Actually, it doesn't really surprise me all that much. Even though SMILE is nearing Lunar Magic in awesomeness, Super Metroid is a much more extensive game to hack than Super Mario World, not to mention it's just more awesome. I, for one, am reluctant to hack such an awesome game, since I don't think I could really compare. Plus I know how lazy I am, I'd never finish a hack of this size.

But yeah, gooo Jathys! Making dreams possible and other such happy stuff.

I had to refresh the page to load the first screen. It loaded partway, but then mysteriously broke.

I really don't like the first screen at all. I mean, it looks awesome, but Dracula's grave really doesn't seem to fit. Something original would be nice, but something ripped that seems to fit the atmosphere better would be good too.

Also, I have to agree with Keikonium in saying that the letters look a bit...odd. They're too plain-looking to have the asymmetrical look work for them. (Of course, that somehow applies to letters that aren't symmetrical. How? Hell if I know. They just kinda look...squished.) You might wanna draw them either more plainly, or with more flourish.

Otherwise, looks good to me.

Why not just use Geocities? Sure, it doesn't allow hotlinking, but just make a little page with a link to the file, then link to that. I'm fairly sure that Geocities would allow a 1.2 meg file. If not, Winrar can probably get it under a meg. The only problem I can think of would be bandwidth, since I really have no idea how much Geocities allows you.

Hope that helps.

18. Most serious - Kyouji Craw.

27. Best local mod - Juggling Joker.
34. Best post layout - BMF, duh.
42. Best ROM Hacker - Dahrk Daiz. (Yes, it's a stock answer. Get over it.)
43. Best SMW Hacker - Kyouji Craw.
50. Most likely to be hit by a parked car - smwedit.

Yeah, my paint only saves in bitmap as well. Go Windows ME.

Google Irfanview, that's a neat little program that converts to practically any graphics format, and you can do batches of pictures too. Yarooh.

To be on topic...Mushroom city is too damned brown. It's got no variety. The graphical style is fine, but it needs more color. And bland is definitely the word I'd use to describe all but the second and third screenshots, since those don't load. Needs more...uh...not boringness. Also, the ground in the first shot just looks like you just put random pixels of color in there.

EDIT: Well, the second and third picture loaded, but they seem to be the same picture. Oh boy. Yeah, the ground in those sucks. (Better than I could probably do, but that's really not saying a lot)

Hm. Genres.

2D Platformer: SMB3 or Zelda 2.
3D Platformer: Either SM64 or Conker's Bad Fur Day, in totally different ways.
Action: Contra
Action/RPG: Zelda.
Adventure: Monkey Island.
Exploration: Exploration is a genre now? Then Zelda goes here again.
FPS: Half-life, no freaking doubt.
Horror: Eternal Darkness. Totally different perspective on it.
Multiplayer: Worms.
Puzzle: Tetris, though I don't like it.
Racing: Super Mario Kart, though once again, I don't like it too much.
RPG: I'm torn between Chrono Trigger and Earthbound, but let's just say EB.
RTS: Herzog Zwei. It started an entire genre, so I think it goes here.
Simulation: Sim City, the original and the SNES. Both huge leaps.
Space Shooter: Guardian Legend or Ikaruga.
Strategy: Advance Wars. (Famicom Wars to be fair. It made war wacky!) Fire Emblem as well.

I wouldn't say any of these are the pinnacles of their genre, but they fit the bill for revolutionary. All of these either changed the way people looked at that type of game, or just turned the standards upside-down. Hooray for that.

Heh, far from it. It's basically the original "artillery game." You know, those games where you pick an angle and a power, and shoot? Yeah. It's that. Except it owns. It's got tons of weapons, cash to buy them with, shields, parachutes, gas...you name it, it probably doesn't have it, but you'll be surprised at how awesome what it does have is.

Too bad there's no form of internet multiplayer. That would totally rock.

If you like Scorched Earth, you should check out Pocket Tanks (google it). It's sort of a modernized version. Less frantic feeling, but still a damned good game.

Well, it's sort of obvious. It's like

"HAY WUNT 2 B A BAD GUY?!!

YES I AM DUM
No, I'd rather defeat the evil queen, as I originally set out to do."

And anyway, you don't lose much progress, you just have to sit through the same little cut scene once more. Boo hoo.

I tend to do this quite a bit when I go to the Flea Market...

I got Fallout 1 and 2 at Wal-mart because, well, "post-apocalyptic RPG" is a great catch phrase. That's probably the best "on the spot" purchase I've made.

I got F-zero X and Conker's Bad Fur Day at a flea market, though. I'd played F-zero on an emulator, but I didn't know they had one for the N64. Christ, that game rules. Also, I'd briefly heard of CBFD, but I thought it was just a generic platformer with random cussing. How wrong I was.

Got Plok almost at random at EB. Not the best purchase ever, but the music made it worth it.

So yeah, I tend to do this a lot, especially with used games. It's hard to go wrong with a 5 dollar N64 or SNES game.

Okay, imagine an RPG. Now take out all the good elements, such as interesting characters, neat abilities, good graphics, and variation in gameplay. Got it? Okay.

Now take Bomberman. Once again, remove all the good elements, such as the frantic gameplay, cool powerups, catchy music, and interesting stages.

Combine those, throw in a Pokemon ripoff, and you've got Bomberman Tournament for the GBA. It's like they decided on the best ways to immediately bore people.

Programmer 1: Hey, I've got a good idea! Let's make it so Bomberman moves really slow, can only place two bombs, and doesn't have any special moves!
Programmer 2: Brilliant! While you're at it, make the menu system awkward and annoying. Oh, and add some mindless levelling that only applies to your useless monsters, yet is required to finish the game.
Programmer 1: Will do. Oh, do you mind if I make it so saving is impossible in a level, and if you die you have to restart at the last town, even though it took you 15 minutes to get there?
Programmer 2: No, go ahead. In fact, you should also make saving unnecessarily annoying. Make it so every time you save, it asks you if you want to shut down the game and starts on the "yes" option so you'll accidentally hit it.
Programmer 1: Good idea. Now excuse me while I strangle some kittens.

This game sucks, if you can't tell. I hate it, and I hope it dies.

Dokapon for the GBA is worse though. Rock Paper Scissors and RPGs don't go together, damnit.'

Hydlide is strangely addictive. And damnit, I like Lagoon.

Earth. Freaking. Bound.

One of the best game endings to one of the best games. I love it. Sadly, it's been so long that I don't even remember it that much. I just know it ruled.

Secret of Evermore is also awesome, especially if you wait a bit after it gets to "THE END." That part is funny, yet disturbing sorta.

And, finally (because I'm too lazy to continue thinking up games), Chrono Trigger. Yeah, maybe the ending itself isn't spectacular, but I'm sorta counting the entire end thing, including the final battle. Killing Lavos fucking rules.

Well, if you're looking for SNES music, try www.snesmusic.org. You'll need a winamp plugin, though.

You can also get the same kind of music for some N64, NES, Genesis, GBA, and GB games at www.zophar.net, though most of those plugins require you to have a faster computer if you don't want them to skip when you do stuff.

And finally, www.emuparadise.org has a bunch of VG music MP3s.

Hope that helps ya out.

Oh, yeah, I've done that with a coupla soundtracks. You can just set the disk writer thing to output MP3s directly. Here's a tip: Turn off the equalizer. I forgot. Three times. Now it's all double-equalized. Damn me.

They have some of the tracks, but not all. I'm not sure if they rotate them or whatever, since I don't really check. But they might. Also, I forgot...

http://www.protoman.com/

He's got all sorts of neat soundtracks, like Timesplitters 2, and...you know, stuff. He rotates them, though, so you can only get the non Megaman games 1 out of 3 days. You can always use the torrent, though.

Actually, right now it all seems down, but, you know. Torrents and all that.

I was totally on topic. I was saying that, though I think Kyouji is wrong and the movie might be alright, Zeogred is also wrong in saying "... besides, Jessica Alba, " since she's "meh" at best. So there.
