Well, since I can't seem to find a working version of Yoshi's Island, I figured I'd do the SMB3 Ice graphics. I've pretty much finished up the FG, but I can't seem to find the damned background anywhere in the ROM. I've found a couple of the others, but no trace of the big snow-covered trees.

So, can anyone help? I'm sure I can rip it if I can just FIND it. Plus, I don't think doing it exclusively from screenshots is a good idea. It's, uh, evil.

Hey, thanks a bunch dude. You rock.

Can you send it to Papercube@gmail.com?

And yeah, didn't mean to offend you with that comment. Fact of the matter is that I don't take ANYONE that seriously. So, sorry about that.

Also, I er, kinda thought you were someone else. I realized about an hour later who you REALLY were and went "Oh shit!" So don't mind me, I'm an idiot.

Well, if you've got Windows, use Paint. Pick up the color with the eyedrop tool, then go Colors > Edit Colors in the menu. Once there, hit "Define custom colors," and the RGB value should be in the lower right.

I'm sure there's an easier way, but I can't find one. You'll have to live with this, eh?

I, uh, kinda forgot who requested the SMB3 Ice set, plus I'm too lazy to go load the original thread, but to whoever DID request it, just wanted to let you know there's actually been progress. It's almost done, just need to get the clouds in there (and probably do some palette re-arrangement, knowing my luck/incredible planning skills). Also, it does screw up the status bar, but it's still readable. Just ugly.

I'll probly send it in tomorrow or the day after, depending on how things go.

Also, I now have new respect for graphics rippers. Didn't know graphic ripping was this...long. Heh.

Couldn't you use ExGFX to replace the Reznor sprite for only that level? Or would that screw up the boss level? I honestly don't know, I've never edited one.

Thanks. I'll send it to ya once I get the clouds in and stuff, but I don't think you'll be able to do a lot. I used up every single color in palette 0, and the only reason it doesn't look worse is because I managed to only minorly screw up the palette 1.

One option would be to move the colors down to palette 2 (or 3 or 4) so they don't screw up the status bar, but in that case, it would ruin one of the yoshi-berry things. I suppose it would be a matter of preference.

Although, now that I think about it, it may be possible to not screw anything up with a bit of creative paletting and using different palettes for 8x8 tiles. Still, I'm MUCH too lazy to do that, so if you're willing to, feel free.

Also, in the other post I forgot to say "Huge thanks to peter_ac, who found the background and sent it to me. Go him."

The "virus" changes "Coby" to "Cuby." I keep thinking people are talking to me. Bork bork bork indeed.

I decided to just let the status bar problem go, so I'm about to submit the snow thing to Coby. Though I can't say I've made extensive use of the berries, I'd rather mess up something totally unimportant than something that could actually be put to use. Thanks for volunteering though, Darkflight.

Also, I had to slightly recolor the pipes to fix a palette problem. The file's included, but if you've changed GFX14, then this won't, uh. Work right. Which you probably knew, but hey. If you wanna fix it yourself, just change the black that the pipe is using from color 2 to color 8. Yeah, it's a pain, sorry.

A couple of minor(ish) issues:

The little box that is supposed to hold the card isn't exactly the right color, but I kinda ran out of colors, and it's close enough. You'll live.

Quite a few of the platforms don't fade out correctly (The snow platform, the ice cubes, and the green part of the, uh, green platform thingy), nor does the background. Anything that's normally right at the end of an SMB3 level should fade right, though. So there.

Like...that's it. Heh, went on a bit long there. Oh well, eh?

Posted on 04-06-05 01:49 PM, in What is LEAST important in a SMW hack? Link
Well, since I have no skills in Graphics, ASM, or anything else that requires knowledge outside of Lunar Magic, I have to say Level Design is the MOST important. Choosing which was least important was hard, though...I went with ASM because I think you can make a good hack just using the SMW engine.

This is assuming that by "SMW engine," I mean "SMW engine with the numerous ASM modifications done by Lunar Magic." Obviously, we'd have pretty much nothing in the way of SMW hacks without ASM, but let's just ignore that fact. Heh.

I figure graphics are slightly more important because they're generally more obvious. ASM can change the way a game plays, but new graphics can change the way a game feels.

"Quirks" are higher because without a bit of personality injected into the hack, it can be really...really...boring.

Isn't sprite placement kinda part of level design? What's a level without sprites? That's right: Boring as hell.

Er, well, the hack I'm working on is basically a level only hack. Kinda. I used some custom blocks and shitty ExGFX, but the gameplay is basically the same. The only problem is that I've only finished 1.3 worlds. And it took me a year and a half. So...if you're REALLY patient, you should be getting a new mostly level only hack.

Otherwise, I'm completely unhelpful.

Make sure you include blocks that are in the bottom row so that the player can't see them, and include gaps that you have to jump over. That's possibly the stupidest level "feature" ever.

But yeah, sounds like a good idea.

Completely ignoring the technical reasons why this is not a good idea, I think it's not a good idea.

I do, however, like the idea of renaming the player to "Cheater" or something. Reminds me of Link's Awakening where you get your name changed to "Thief" if you steal stuff.

A quick google search revealed this, made by Luigi-san. So there. I don't think a demo was released, though.

I'm using the "Movement Block Right Medium" from Blocktool, and I'd like it to affect sprites as well as Mario. I figure it would have something to do with changing the "Spr UD offset" or "Spr LR offset," but honestly, I have no idea. So is there something simple I could do to make it affect sprites, or is it more complicated? Is it for some reason not possible? Any help would be appreciated.

How about a badge that lets you switch characters in the middle of a level? (If you have the badges to have those characters, that is)

Maybe a "just-for-fun" badge that turns you into one of the original characters in Doki Doki Panic. That would be stupid, but neat anyway.

I don't know how possible this is, but a badge that puts an exclamation point over your head when you're standing on a potion (or other strange grass thingies) would rule. Sure, it's stolen from Paper Mario, but the whole premise is, so screw it.

I'm out of ideas.

Alright, thanks. That's the answer I was expecting anyway, so no big deal.

That's pretty damned cool, but what's with the strange green spots in the middle of the lava and near the top? Looks a bit odd.

I hate to agree with you (Actually, I'm lying. I almost always agree with you. But I have to say that, it's the law.), but right on. I don't hear anyone complaining when people steal graphics from commercial games. Sure, two wrongs don't make a right, but if you're complaining about one, then you're obliged to complain about the other. I'm willing to look past the blatant plagiarism of graphics ripping because, quite honestly, it's not a big deal. Ripping ripped graphics is exactly the same, except it's even LESS of an issue. The only problem is that this is a fairly small community, so people are more likely to get riled about it. The fact is that by stealing, you're condoning theft. So quit bitching about it.

Still, it'd be a nice to give credit to the original rippers. Yes, that goes against everything I just said, but this is a small community, so it's only polite. Also, I don't think I could rip other hackers graphics, but if you're willing to face the consequences, go ahead.

some people are actually proud of their so-called ripping abilities.
personally, i'd feel ashamed to do so.

Actually, depending on the source, ripping can be fairly difficult, especially if you don't wanna screw up the original palettes. It's not exactly a skill, per se, but it is something that, honestly, I'm not willing to do. It's tedious, time consuming, and fairly unrewarding (at least for me). People who do difficult rips at least deserve some props for going through something that I really don't have the willpower to go through with.

Anyway, if I were to use rips that other people ripped, I'd be sure to give them credit. They saved me time and effort, so they at least deserve that. No, ripping isn't a skill like creating graphics is, but it is a task in any case.

Also, some people (read: Me) have practically nil in the way of graphical skills. Ripping is a way of giving a unique feel to the hack without having to spend hours on some hand-drawn graphic that's going to suck in the end anyway.

You're right about the rest of the stuff, though. I just wanted to point out that ripping isn't a five-minute no-work job.

Actually, there is a slight difference: If you steal someone's hand-drawn hacked-in graphics without giving credit, then you're going to get yelled at. That's it.

Also, d4s, you're probably right and I just suck. It's probly 10 times easier for anyone else. Even so, I still plan on giving credit to rippers (if I ever use someone else's ripped graphics) because I wouldn't have a complete product were it not for their work. That would be like not giving credit to someone in a movie because they only had a 3-minute part. Sure, it's easy, but their contribution made the end result what it is.
