SMW was the first game I ever owned, though I had played the NES a lot. However, this is about style, not function.

The racoon gear was pimpin! The cape just doesn't have the same panache. I mean, where are the ears?! Would you rather pummel somebody with an ass-slap, or a wimpy wrist-flick? The choice is obvious.

In no particular order:

Final Fantasy Tactics (may not count, but... whatever. Kickass!)
Chrono Trigger. (Hands down. Magus, please father my children. So they float.)
Xenogears. (also hands down. Best plot in an RPG, period.)

Sonic trumps.

Where else can you get Ocean Water w/cream flavoring and real kiwis? One sip and I'm in Jamaicaland!

The burgers are nice n' greasy, too.

But even better than Sonic is NMs statewide burger chain, BLAKE'S LOTTABURGER. They were just bought out, but they still taste great. And they actually cook their stuff, rather than microwaving it. And their to go bags are white, so you can see the grease all nasty. MMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I'm scared of my love cheating on me. But only a lil' bit. I'm the best thing that's happened to her in a while, and I know how to forgive. (not w/out a little guilt-tripping though.... damn it.)

I'm WAY more scared of Bush and his cronies than of anything on a personal level. People in this country have the nerve to wonder how the Germans went along with Hitler in WWII and then stick a flag on their cars. If you ask me, we're fucked!

Posted on 03-17-04 03:38 AM, in Old vs. New Games Link
New games are flashier, a lot of fun, but somehow more shallow. I think it's just because they have to be easier to be in 3-d, as most new ones are. (Note the penis-severing difficulty of next-gen 2-d games like Ikaruga. Aaaugh! My gonads!!) But that always happens right after a technological bar-raising. Next-gen games are getting more complex, more tightly knit, and deeper every year. This trend can be seen in the old school systems too.
Just look at the lifespan of the Super NES. Example: the difference between Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island. Bickering about the different merits of both games aside, the first one was graphically simpler, and had a more stable base. (NOTE!!! I AM NOT SAYING EITHER ONE IS BETTER!!!) Yoshi's Island had much more texture, and some ridiculously challenging variety. (Touch fuzzy, get dizzy! Remember? They even tweaked the music and made his eyes bug out a la psylocibin!) I guess I'm just trying to say that different doesn't mean better or worse, but games are definitely improving (if that makes sense).

I love St. Patrick's day!!!! I have a pig bimpin green button-down to rock @ the bars tomorrow night. I'm visiting my folks in Boston this week (from grandmother's house we post), so it should be cool beans for all. Also I've been drinking Heineken all week long.

And I believe my layout will speak for itself.

Long live the unspeakable horrors of alcohol!

Aaugh! I forgot Vampire Hunter D!!!! My bad, Kasumi. I left out mononoke and spirited away because those anime are much more recent, and I was focusing on the old-schoolers. But yes, a drastic mistake was made. It's ok, because no one is voting anyway. I guess beauty really is in the eye of the beholder.

(However, I would vote for Vampire Hunter D, I think...)

Wow, we have a lot of agoraphobics (I think this is the word, correct me, please). I used to be very nervous, about my appearance, about the future, about whatever random thing might go wrong. One day I awoke with an unbelievable sensation of calm. I didn't even have to think about anything to come to a realization that has stuck with me ever since...

it's all good

What do I care what people think, or what horrors the future holds? Not that these things don't matter to me, but I just take them objectively now. Come what may, I'll still be me, until I die. If you worry about the future how can you live in the present?

I can't really explain the sensation I felt, but it's along those lines and it really is all good. Love and life, that's all I need.

And you'd be amazed at the changes that such an attitude has wrought.. whew!!

So don't sweat it. If people talk shit, tell them to go fuck themselves, or even better, just smile and nod. If fear looms its ugly head, just find something to laugh at or go masturbate or something. Screw all the insecure losers who need to take their problems out on you, they are far worse off than you'll ever be, and the fact that you know that can be enough to propel you above the shit-storm.
Peace.

My resiliance, my girlfriend (the word 'possesion' is not to be taken literally in this case, just to disarm any backlash ), and my brother.

Posted on 03-17-04 06:05 AM, in Music: Download or Buy? Link
I buy from struggling bands and that's it, no matter how much I like the succesful ones. The problem with this whole issue is that bands like Metallica, who see a much, much, MUCH greater profit margin from individual album sales than just about any other group on the face of the earth, were hyped up by the media to make it seem like downloading is taking money away from the artists. In reality, downloading is taking sizeable, but completely manageable, slices of profits from RECORD LABELS. The artists literally get less than a percent of the cost of each individual album. Most groups' royalty fees are less than one percent of album sales, and their contracts usually require them to pour most of that money into touring, and the next album. So it really does hurt small, underground artists and labels when you get their music without paying for it (even though it does help word-of-mouth knowledge of bands to spread much more quickly than it would without things like Kazaa), but as for major-label bands and artists, they aren't going to see a penny's difference one way or the other. All you're hurting are record label profits. I still buy when I really like the album, but I have exceptions that require me to exclusively download content.

1. The bands' frontman or founding member(s) are dead. I.E. Nirvana, the Beatles, Alice in Chains, etc. I'm sure the deceased members of the band would be happier knowing that their music survived for free in the underground, and wasn't representing the continually bulging wallets of the scumbags that screwed them their whole lives.
2. The band retains its members, but has lost sight of their vision by the seas of cash in which they swim. I.E. Red Hot Chili Peppers. What is this new shit anyhow?! I know this is just a matter of opinion, but come on, what happened? If I want to purchase an older album from them, all I'm supporting is the new, plastic version of the band, and the foul label that produces them. I'd rather download the good old stuff so as to be able to enjoy the classic spirit of good times and funk that they originally had going for them without having to contribute to the dead horse-flogging.
3. The band sucks, and was never good to begin with. I don't regard most mainstream pop as having a soul of any kind. Sorry, but if you don't write your own material, you are what is commonly referred to as a COMMERCIAL. I hate paying for advertising even more than I hate telemarketing calls that put me on hold. In fact, I only download mainstream pop songs in order to inject some comic relief into some mix CD or another. Why should I pay for a laugh?

Arrg!! Watch out, I'm toppling off my soapbox and I don't know where I'm going to land!!!!

Yes, nicely put. It's strange, when you see or experience anything that's really going to stick with you, you know it from the beginning and it really glues to your brain. Both Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away captivated me immediately, much to my surprise (I had previously been touting a 'child-oriented=kiddie=weak' attitude, but I was pimp-slapped into consciousness by these films!!)

Oh my god, that's right. I've only seen Mononoke once, but I remember being pretty disturbed by the generous decapitations.

Spirited away is much more relaxed, and very well done. Don't miss it for the world!

I wanted to be a writer until I was faced with this kind of bull-dookie. The problem is that in order to get the concept across to a large, or even a small class, the instructor has to hash it out with the lowest common denominator. So you wind up cramping your style just to answer some question that has nothing to do with *your* interpretation of what you've read and written. My solution is just to post , and if I feel like writing, I just go write. No one needs to see it, no one needs to judge it, and I don't need to jabber about what I read either.

Actually, I can write dissertation-style essays about a lot of subjects, especially whatever rant is on my mind at the moment, but I do pretty shitty with fiction these days.

Want a great book that is every english teacher's favorite, but NO ONE can figure out what it means, despite how good it is?
Cormac McCarthy's blood meridian

EDIT: I hate those grade-grubbing retards that pretend they are on exactly the same wavelength as the teacher. Watch how they nod the next time you're in class and you'll have a good laugh. It's like they all came off the same assembly line in the Barbie and Ken factory.

Posted on 03-17-04 07:40 AM, in Your religious beliefs Link
I was raised by atheists, and I would consider myself an agnostic. Somebody earlier in the thread said that agnosticism is just christianity with a safety net, but I disagree.

I'm agnostic in the sense that I discard any kind of creationist or otherwise mythical explanation for things. If the *current* boundaries of our scientific understanding aren't completely in sync with the actual state of our environment, it's not because some deity is fucking with us or testing our faith, it's because we either haven't figured something out yet or the universe is simply behaving in more complex ways than we puny humans can comprehend. I mean, look at quantum physics. Did you know that by attempting to quantify or predict the outcome of a probability equation effects the outcome itself? That's how complex our universe is, and we can only peer a few hundred orders of magnitude above or below our level of perception. So if there is a god, or *whatever*, it is another function of the universe that has nothing to do with religion. Spirituality is just a description of people being aware of their own mortality, which is not a bad thing. It gets muddled, and people throw hissy fits and wars, when someone tries to affix permanent labels all over the universe and our concept of the unknown. Hopefully our race can learn to cope with the constant state of decay and renewal that is our ever-changing universe before we wipe ourselves out in the name of god.

Bottom line, god is unknowable, science works, and we're just very, very lucky mold on the surface of a big ball of rock. thank *god* (i.e. the laws of nature) that we are self-aware, to a point.

I feel honored to be a part of such a healthy thread. I agree, life is precious, and death is certain. It is important to celebrate what little we have, and to take each passing in stride.
