Shortly after the crash I tried to find some of my posts in the Google cache, but I couldn't find any. Unfortunately, the board is set up so that robots will not follow links. That is why Google and the WayBack machine don't have many pages from the board. They had old pages and pages that were linked from other sites in thier index, but not new ones. I thought about creating "spiderbait" pages that link to large numbers of thread URLs. The spiderbait pages would then be submited to Google and Alexia. I didn't do it because I thought that it might cause trouble. BTW, I wonder how many times the database has been backed up so far. |

I don't have AIM. Perhaps we could talk here or on IRC?

The search form was never removed. The link was removed, and it is still possible to get to the search form by typing in the address. Also, the search function is handled by thread.php, not the script that generates the search form. If you find the search form, avoid using it unless an admin tells you that using it is permitted. I was not around here then, but I think that the problem was not bandwidth but CPU and RAM usage. I know of at least one other site that started to have trouble with database performance when it got busy. The search function was disabled there because it slowed down the site and was crashing the database server. |

The client is already required logon before requesting notifications from the server. The client is allowed to specify any IP address because the client may be using a HTTP proxy or some strange network. The code probably should check that the IP address is not multicast. The code already requires a high port to prevent packets from going to a UDP service somewhere. The code is designed to work on cheap hosts that only allow a limited number of languages on thier servers. Adding acknowledgements would require the script to wait for a response and slow down the whole site or having an external program perform the notifications. There appears to be no way for a PHP script to fork off a child process running the same script independant of the web server if PHP is running as a server module. After talking to Jesper on IRC about ways to send updates, I thought of another way. It would require giving up on up-to-the-second updates but would work on any host capable of hosting a stock AcmlmBoard. For each AcmlmBoard page requested, insert a row into a log table and remove all rows that are older than a certain amount of time. When someone wants to see recent activity, dump all of the table that the the user wants and is allowed to see. As for the obscurity around AcmlmBoard development, I don't think all of the reasons are technical. As for anything I code, I'd like feedback about possible problems or improvements before any deployment takes place. |

Am I the only one here that does not have any kind of cable/satilite/digital TV? Where I live there is no cable service. Cable and satilite are not worth the price, and digital TV recivers are unaffordable.

Who needs IKEA? I don't. I made my computer desk(yes, the one I'm using now) in 2001 from an old door and some scrap lumber left over from construction projects the previous year.

I'm no expert, but in English in general vowels are pronounced short unless followed by another vowel. Since there is no vowel after the "o" it only seems right to pronounce it short.

I don't drink alcohol. The largest quantity that I have ever had at one time was individual cups of communion wine, and the last time was long ago. Other than that, the only alcohol that I have consumed is the trace amounts in cooked items such as rum cake and and the last drops of beer that I tried to drink out of empty cans when I was less than five years old. I have even turned down offers of beer and wine. I'm just not interested.

This is a lesson that the software industry learned the hard way in the 1980s and the entertainment industry is still learning. |

Last time I checked, CRTs produced a better picture and were cheaper. Flat CRTs are available. I'd stick with CRTs unless energy consumption or desk space is a major issue. |

AcmlmBoard doesn't support adding passwords to forums, but you can set a minimum powerlevel(-1 = banned, 0 = normal, 1 = local mod, 2 = full mod, 3 = admin) for forums. See http://s91407720.onlinehome.us/acmlmboard_files/abhacks/faq.html#3.

I wonder if anyone will end up patching the LM binary to add new features.Originally posted by dan I'm sure that if protecting the lockout feature becomes the main reason for not releasing the source, the creation and distribution of a lock removal tool could be arranged. |
