After reading some posts at Zophar's Domain, pipes clangor mentioned he found something, which I find disturbing.

Dan, I know you have said that you don't wish to see a DS emulator for some time. That is also my wish, but I think there are those that don't give a shit at all... This is gonna make me sick...

From what I can tell, it doesn't run any games yet. Just development demos. And it might not run any for some time if the games are all encrypted.

Someone had to eventually. Anymore, you're not going to stop most people from advancing emulation of any new system.

Not like it's full-fledged yet, had I started seeing sites with DS emus and ROMs, that worked well, that is, I probably would be flipping too.

Well, homebrew wise this is a good thing. But honestly, it's one of thoose systems that wouldn't work as good on a emulator than the real thing. ARM is wellknown how it works and such, so it's really not that amazing that there is a emulator...

I'm not expecting fully fledged DS emulation soon thought. Especially if "ROMs are encrypted" saying is true.

it'll be only matter of time before they are decrypted. there are "gifted" people out there. I believe the same held true for the GBA--that there was an emu for it before it was formally released...

*shrug* And? I don't think anyone has a problem with a DS emulator that's only capable of showing some rather simple demos to begin with.

Of course, it's a little harder to get the ball rolling without a lot of roms to play with.

Wait, wait, wait...

How did they get them running on a real DS? I didn't think they'd got far enough to get it to download code... (That should make dumping ROMs pretty easy, really... That's how most systems with 'unreadable' formats such as DC and GCN are done.)

Maybe by a wireless router? I heard that people succefully dumped Pictochat pictures or something, but i'm not sure if they have made transmission of software possible.

And if they crack the encryption? Well it depends on what type of encryption, it can't be too advanced as that would slow things down... Are people even sure it's encryption or it's just some big rumour going around?

I'm pretty sure there's some form of encryption, which really would make sense, since I think the DS firmware is in charge of loading data from the cart like with disc-based systems. It does say RSA Secured on the back, and apparently there isn't much of it in use with the wireless protocol. (Last I checked they were able to tunnel Pictochat through the web and get the system to recognize (but not download) modified Mario 64 download packets.)

DS Emulation? What the hell is the point of doing it? People have not yet had enough time to appreciate the system, and it sure looks like those dudes are coding the emulator just to show off.

They nay show off, but it also proves that they are able to code for DS, coding for a System, wichs development tools are not free accesible, and only to licensed firms ect. Proves that they have indeed skill and endurance to programm and test code on unkown hardware.

And coding a good emulator, espacially in the early stages of the systems emulation live proves again, that the author is a gifted coder, or has way too much free time.

And proves that people forgot about the core principles of emulating old systems so that their software doesn't dissapear... Emulation is not illegal, of course, but the majority of people doesn't even know the legal standpoint difference between emulators and roms. Most people just see it as 'free entertainment'.

Didn't see it hurt the GBA. Emulation was possible a short time after the first few dumps filtered through from Japan.

Hahahahahahahaha.

Sure, you tell the rest of the able people in the world to not do that. If people have access to do things and the ability to get away with it, what do you think they're going to do?

Exactly. Plus a lot of programmers DO like the challenge; it's sort of a status symbol.

NO$GBA only became available to the public after a few years, it wasn't in the author's interest to release it to the masses who only wanted it to play games on. (Ironically, I consider NO$'s sound quality to be better than VBA's. It's a decent GBA emu too.)

i'm somewhat torn, personally. While i would love to get down and messy with a new system, just to see what makes it tick, i would have some reservations about actually releasing an emulator. when it comes out so soon (or even before) a system is released, it goes into the realm of total lameness and "d00d warez!1" kiddies, like the GBA.

it's hard to find a place to draw a line, but in a perfect world it would be emulator releases for people who would actually do something productive with it, ie homebrew developement, instead of just finding another thing to pirate after downloading the half-lifelolz because they don't feel like getting a freaking job.

Challenge? Bah. There are lots of other ways of challenging yourself through programming, like by making a decent emulator of the system you REALLY enjoy and not of a system that barely came out. They're probably just doing it for fame or something (OMG look at teh l33t kod3rz).

Excuse me? I'm 23, dick... Nobody has bought me anything for 6 years, so what the hell are you talking about?

DS emulation, RIGHT NOW, is bad, whether I can get the system or not. THAT's irrelevant. What is relevant, is that the system is brand fucking new...
