Mac:

SubEthaEdit. Kickass editor, but its claim to fame is that you can edit the same document with numerous other people, over the network or internet, simultaneously, without restrictions. I've done about five sessions, but doing a project in this would kick so much ass, it wouldn't even be funny.

Xcode (and Cocoa). As I've waffled about continuously to anyone that's ever been programming, Cocoa, one of the main frameworks for programming on OS X is really the bee's knees. There's just so much stuff built in it's like Visual Basic with a lot of the custom controls, but since you use Objective-C which is a superset of C, and there are good frameworks at lower depth including "convenience wrappers" in Objective-C, you can drop down low-level instantly, and it's just very seamless. Xcode is the hub in the set of development tools that come with the OS, and it's great. It, together with a special version of gcc, provides "ZeroLink" - linking in symbols dynamically on run-time, and also simple distributed compiling, which means that you put another Mac on the network, hit a few checkboxes, and whenever it's compiling it calls up the other Mac and asks it to help with compiling, and it's just done faster.

OmniWeb. Like every other new web browser out there, but better.

Windows

Paint Shop Pro. Photoshop is built for professional photo editing, ImageReady is crippled, GIMP is confusing, Paint Shop Pro is for me.

(And that's it for Windows for me, actually. There are lots of great programs I use, like Firefox, FeedDemon, Norton SystemWorks, Trillian, iTunes, FlashFXP, EditPad Pro... but there's just PSP that isn't available on other platforms, doesn't solve a problem that mostly goes away with another platform or isn't available in a better version on another platform. I'm serious.)

More to come, including Linux picks. I'll be editing this post later on.

Yes, finally someone who agrees. I've always prefered Paint Shop Pro over Photoshop; Photoshop makes things so much more complicated and it's a way heavier program.

Though I have to say, I 'stuck' with Paint Shop Pro 7, I really didn't like all the changes in 8, and 9. Though the scripting feature where you can write commands to take care of a lot and repetetive work is awesome.

On Photoshop v Paint Shop Pro, I think the reason I prefer Photoshop is that I know it. It's what I was taught in school. If I had been taught Paint Shop Pro, I might prefer that. That's all it really comes down to for me, I just know Photoshop better. And the GIMP confuses me. I do use ImageReady though for making the occasional animated GIF.

My killer app on Windows is Open Canvas. It is one of very few programs I use Windows for. (the others being old games from the late 80's and early 90's). Course, this is probably only a killer app for those with graphics tablets... If this program was on a Mac, I'd long ago have ditched Windows.

Some of the following have been ported to OS'es and environments other than the common Unices (for instance, there's a Cygwin port of Xfce), but since they're mainly developed for *nix, I'm going to list 'em anyway.

My two favorite window managers are Enlightenment and Xfce. As I explained in the window manager thread, I like Enlightenment's GUI paradigm and I like how Xfce can be configured to behave in much the same way. They can both be made to look polished, which is important to me because I like to work in a perty environment.

My terminal emulator of choice is Eterm, mainly because of the pertiness factor. Most terms have a boring black or white background, but Eterms can be transparent (well, sort of - it fakes it by copying the desktop background, but it still looks nifty) with a specific tint and shade, and they are themable as well. Mine is set up with blue-tinted transparency and a brushed metal theme. I first discovered Eterm over three years ago, and I wouldn't be surprised if other nice-looking terminal emulators have been developed since then, but I haven't felt like messing around with any of the unfamiliar terms because Eterm works for me. If it ain't broke...

mplayer fricking rules. It uses third-party DLL's to play virtually any sort of movie file in existence, including the latest versions of Windows Media files, and it works very, very well. You can run it from the command line or with an optional themable GUI.

I prefer a combination of PSP8 and The GIMP 2 for picture editing. Since the last one starts up in a couple of seconds, uses only a little more than 20 MB or RAM, it is great for pasting screenshots and such; the FU script filter engine also is very neat.

PSP8 has a good layout and finally I can reach the current tool's setting in the main window without the need to have a floatin window (such as thickness of a pen and so on).
Sadly the start up time is much longer than version 7, but then I'll go with GIMP for smaller edits.
For created animated GIFs, nothing beats Animation Shop Pro. Easy, very fast and a perfect user interface make the decision for me easy.

So do I (same version), since December 1997 Small (2MB on disk, 4MB RAM without images), fast, supports a lot of image formats, better than Paint for everything yet still easy to use ...

And for everything Paint Shop Pro 4 can't do, I use Photoshop 6 (since 2001), or sometimes both together, and I never felt the need to upgrade either ...

I have PS8 (CS) myself, but considering my system isn't too new, it takes it's sweet time loading up. I'm waiting a good minute, though it's worth it for what I use it for.

That's not even basically the system, but simply the resources the program uses. And that's the only real negative part I noticed with PSP8.

I have an AMD XP 2800+ CPU with Barton core, along with 512 DDR-RAM(PC 400) and Windows XP Home with all updates. When I'm using the computer, I usually have more than 300 MB left when Firefox and Thunderbird are open for example (so the required 60+ MB for PSP8 are no problem) - and PSP8 takes nearly 20 seconds to start it up, when it is not cached. PSP7 started up much faster than that

Well.. that Rydain metioned Eterm I'm going to say I prefer aterm as mine. It does the prettiness that she mentioned. Though I've never gotton Eterm to compile. Another thing is that it blends in with WindowMaker or AfterStep by default (though I currently have scrollbars hidden).

*watches your P3 blast past my Celery 800mhz, even though mine has 192MB* Mine takes about 3 1/2 minutes to open PS8, but it's good anyway. (As compared to Windows... It used to start up fine but all of a sudden it's added "wait for 5 minutes doing absolutely nothing" to its bootup process. But starting up from Hibernate mode takes like 7 seconds. )

A few programs I simply must have on any Windows install:

-Mozilla and Proxomitron: There's links to them in my layout. 'Nuff said. I install these on every computer I intend to use for an extended period of time.

-Textpad: This is a frickin awesome text editor. Open multiple documents and switch between them with one click. Spell checking, syntax highlighting, macros, customizeable shortcut keys, and more features than you can shake an MS Word CD at. (Unfortunately the only program on this list that's not free. Buy it anyway.)

-AVG: Last virus infection: Long before I installed this baby.

-VLC Player: Plays just about any movie you can throw at it, works just like a VCR (if your joypad supports keyboard emulation, you can even use it as a remote ), supports subtitles and multiple audio channels, variable-speed playback with any format, built-in volume control, and playlists. This thing is an anim

Oh!! On VLC, this works on most platforms too.

But it REALLY shines when you start using the streaming features. I've been able to watch TV shows streamed over a WAN and LAN before, it's fun.

Vmware both for Linux and Windows, it's just so... godly for testing out OS's. With some luck you can get exotic OS's to work in VGA mode. And is just perfect for us who have no spare computer for "expriments". Althought this program costs some so... well there was a open sourced Virtual machine too. But I heard it wasn't as good. Besides it's a good way to test a OS before actually installing it.

GIMP is... well, wierd. I'm actually mostly used to Paintshop pro, since that was the editor I grew up with. Althought at one point I used a program called Flamingo.

PSP > Photoshop. ANYTIME.
I just don't like the... Proffesionalism to photoshop.. I've never gotten used to it so I sticked to PSP. The first PSP I had was PSP7 wich, in my opinion, is still better than PSP8. PSP8 takes about 8 seconds to fully start up

I think I'm opposite of you people. I find GIMP normal, and Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro both weird. Maybe because I've used GIMP long before I got a chance to use Photoshop 5, and then I notice two things: 1) The grey, useless window ._. and 2) Limited functionality compared to GIMP.

As I understand it, either Photoshop caught up or GIMP caught up. It was probably the GIMP doing the catching up. Photoshop 5... I used that a year ago at school, so it was old when I used it anyway.

I tried PSP once, but the thing is just too weird.
