Oh, to dream....

What is your dream pieces of hardware, be it internal hardware or peripherals?

Lately, I dream of Apple. In particular, I dream of Apple Cinema Displays. My monitor at home is dying a slow painful color-distorting death, and I dream of the beautiful crystalline display that Apple offer. Color is very important to me, so I want something that displays it properly, and well.

I dream of Cinema Displays and DVI video cards.

Oh....

What do you dream of...?

alpha computer? what's that?

for me, i'd like an Athlon 64 with an Nvidia Quadro that supports dual monitors, 4GB of dual channel DDR RAM, DVD+/-RW drive that can write to dual layer discs, and a ton of HD space.

A fully working Nano computer.

Now that would take awhile to even beat. And it could be realistict, in 20 years...

A computer that is both PowerPC and X86? Impossible, but we can dream on. Being able to multiboot Windows and MacOSx would only be so useful...

I'm rather happy with my current setup, although there are a few things I would really like to have:

- A 21' monitor
- A much faster video card, as my current GeForce is a HUGE bottleneck (I saw a $500+ Matrox card at CompUSA today...discounted from $700+! )
- More high-quality RAM (preferably a 512MB CAS2 DDR dual-channel kit - don't need any more than that)
- A dual-layer DVD

See, I'm mostly happy with my now aging P4. But the display shits me as it distorts color now.

So, the Apple Displays.

But it's not just Apple's displays I dream of. Frankly, I dream of pretty much all of Apple's hardware, particularly if it has "G5" or "Power" in the name....

I also dream of the Mac Mini, because let's face it if I'm being realistic about my money situation, that's about all I can really afford. ;

I want a Mac Mini, mostly becuse I started to get delussioned by X86 systems in average. It could be a nice first step for an PC user that dosen't want to give it up competly and who dosen't have the money to buy the more expensive systems.

Alpha is a 64-bit architecture... it's not so-well supported by commercial OSes, but the Linux community ports almost every distro to it.

I dream of transparent cases. I just have this thing for transparent plastics, I guess. Although I would also have to dream of sufficient cooling to combat a greenhouse effect, and enough money to pay for it.

I want the Mac mini as a simple "build farm" for my Powerbook - Xcode's got distributed compiling. That, or again, these elusive Cinema Displays. I'm happy with my dual monitor setup except for the part where one of the monitors is a VGA one. I still can't believe we're not all on DVI yet.

hmm...what's the difference between DVI and LCD? i doubt they are the same thing, right? I know DVI has a different connector from VGA screens so is it possible to use DVI with a VGA video card or is that a waste of the technology?

I'll be upgrading pretty soon, which I'll be most happy with.

At the moment, I've got:
AMD Athlon 1800xp+ 1.53Ghz
256MB DDR pc2100 RAM
a huge 14GB HDD
32MB GeForce 2
Creative SoundBlaster Live
Some pretty cool 6.1 Logitech 70watt speakers.

What I'll be getting:
Either a P4 3.0Ghz
Or an Athlon 3200+ which is at 2.2Ghz but competes well with a P4 at 3.0Ghz
200GB HDD
1024MB DDR400 RAM
Nvidia LeadTek Winfast 128MB FX5200 graph card
Those cool logitech Z5500 5.1 THX certified speakers which're 500watt RMS 1000 watt peak power.

Obviously not top quality, but a huge improvment no doubt. I'm still undecided on what processor I want. What would you guys recomend?

Simple difference is that DVI sends a digital signal to the display, wheras VGA does not. The digital signal results in clearer color / picture, etc. I'm not really sure of the specific details though, so that's as "technical" as I'll get...

I wish I was on DVI, particularly with the recent problems I've been having with color and stuff on my little PC.

I'd like a case resembling the Helwit-packard TC300 I used to own. Three 5-1/4" bays (one of which came pre-installed with a DVD drive, the other blank, and the last one with something that would fit another floppy/ZIP drive (or a HD, or whatever), one built-in floppy drive, 4 HD bays (yes, I tend to alternate between having the CDROM drive and the HDs plugged in), possibly a hotswap drive for easier changing of HD drives (I believe this was a piece of hardware allowing one to plug in/unplug a HD drives fairly quickly without rebooting/turning off the computer and opening the case)

It'd also have considerable open space on the inside (breathing room), come pre-installed with an average video card, an average CPU, 256/512 MB RAM, a 56K modem, and network port, and 2 USB ports. The side of the case would slide off for easy access to the inside of the computer, whereas the back of the case would have a screw-off back for removal/installation of PCI cards.

The speaker output would have two jacks; one for speakers and one for headphones or the special items at the bottom of this post. If the headphone jack is plugged in, kill speaker output, but return output to the speakers when the headphones disconnect.

The monitor would include a microphone built-in to the top frame and speakers built-in to the side. The volume of the speakers would be accessible via three dedicated buttons on the monitor; one for up, down, and mute, accompanied by several other buttons for fucking with the monitor itself. Maximum resolution of monitor 1600x1200, 32bit color @ 75hz.

The keyboard would include two jacks on the end; one for a standard PS/2 port, the other would go into the headphone jack. The keyboard would have a volume knob on it for adjusting the computer main volume, a mute button, and nothing else. The keyboard would have another headphone jack on the left side, near the "ESC" button, for easy headphone access. The headphone switch on the computer would not be triggered unless there are headphones in the keyboard jack, which would be simple enough to do.

----

This computer's design is based off of the original TC300 design with a few improvements, namely the monitor and system internals. One day I'll make the TC300 Mark II, and this will be it.

Reminds me of this old computer I have. 4 HD bays, 4 drive bays and a floppy bay up at the top. (One of them is used by the reset switch, activity LED, etc, with a cool panel I found containing them all that sits in there. The power switch is at the top by the floppy drive.) There's also enough room for 2 PSUs - why, I don't know, but it's a nice place to cram another HD if need be. The motherboard is also nice. It would have been a totally kickass computer a few years ago (especially before I took most of the HDs and RAM out ). Got like 8 PCI slots too. I'd try to stick this board in there, but the panel on the back with the video/sound/printer ports would make it difficult.

Of course, my dream case would be BIG. Like twice the width and at least 1.5 times the height of your average tower. At least 4 HD bays, 4 drive bays and 2 floppy bays, all with their own activity and maybe power LEDs. The power/reset switch would be similar to a car's ignition (turn it one click to start up, two to reset). The audio jacks (hell, maybe every port) would be on the front along with several USB ports (just get one of those hubs and stick it in there ). Maybe even an LCD display showing things like system temperature, CPU load, memory usage, volume etc (probably connected through serial/parallel port). And the coolest feature would be hot-swappable HDs. All the HD bays would be at the front, and would be just like floppy bays, except they wouldn't be screwed in. Instead, they would be similar to the PS2's network adaptor, you just push the drive in as far as it'll go. This way you could put some sort of handles on the drives, and insert/remove them easily! (Especially useful if there's like a fire or something... Just grab and pull. Sure it'll crash, but it's better than trying to haul the whole computer around or losing all your stuff.)

I might just try to make that someday, out of wood or something.
